Becoming with Wheat: Photosynthesis-Respiration Collaborations
Get PDFRooted in a series of images and texts, these artist’s pages present fragments of Becoming with Wheat: Photosynthesis/Respiration Collaborations, daily collaborative performances presented on Instagram during the first COVID-19 UK national lockdown, June--July 2020. Part of Becoming with Wheat and Other More-Than-Human Others, which explores our interspecies relationship with wheat, as well as the other human and more-than-human entities that are entangled within the kinship, the collaborative performances between myself and Emmer wheat plants cultivated in my garden during spring and summer 2020 enact the reciprocal processes of photosynthesis and respiration: the exchange and transformation of carbon dioxide and oxygen between plant and human. Over a two-month period, I knelt over the wheat patch to take deep breaths for a few minutes each day. I videoed the actions and posted daily excerpts on my Instagram feed with accompanying written reflections. Drawing inspiration from the collaborative performances, I have developed these pages that reflect on a range of literature intersecting with air, breathing, plant--human communication, collaboration, the weather and political ecology
Creative business education: exploring contours of pedagogical praxis
No full textThis volume critically analyses the conceptual contours of pedagogical transformations in the field of creative business education. It calls for an integrated and ethnographic approach to understand, to analyse and to innovate creative curricula that is different from traditional business and management educations and its compliant culture. The book argues for a pluriversal vision based on social intelligence, critical thinking, inclusivity and creativity resulting in a holistic pedagogy that understands the social needs of people and of the planet. The critical reflections on everyday realities of life is central to this intercultural pedagogic approach to understanding and explaining different forms of contemporary crisis. The book brings together interdisciplinary academic practitioners and their praxis with different philosophical orientations within a single ethnographic and theoretical narrative to reclaim global citizenship rights in the age of artificial intelligence, democratic deficit, hyperreality and alienation. In this way, the volume breaks away from the narrow silo of disciplinary boundaries to outline the pedagogical praxis of creative and critical business education that challenges existing knowledge, power and institutions while offering alternative pedagogic approaches to learning, teaching and research

No full textCivitella Ranieri Foundation is pleased to present the third edition of Casting the Castle, curated by Saverio Verini, opening on September 10th, 2022. As the name suggests, Casting the Castle aims to reveal an unexpected image of Civitella Ranieri, unveiling its spaces in new and challenging ways.
The Foundation commissioned nine artists for the occasion, who will present interventions of various natures – live performance, video, installations, and sound – scattered throughout the spaces of the Civitella Ranieri Castle.
Burgoyne presents 'Everest'- a new site specific performance work exploring the paradox of visibility and the invisible as pertains to drawing, here a building of appearance (something) is sought, while in its futility to succeed, the act of immersion in the materiality/making of nothing is the only result. In the case of 'Everest' the rolling and unrolling of tape has created a pile of fake rocks that if unrolled, as a continuous line, the tape would be equal to the height of Everest. The outcome - it is easier to climb the actual Everest, than draw as activation or realisation, far less ascend this modest peak
Towards interculturality in international creative business management in higher education
Get PDFIncreasing diversity in global business has had an impact on the nature and structure of international business education. The provision of international education courses for students studying business has continued to grow, while universities have adopted enhanced internationalisation strategies as a business model worldwide. Such trends have compelled higher education institutions, in general, and business schools, in particular, to reflect upon how to engage with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and how to respond to their potentially different prior educational experiences. The response of higher education institutions to cultural diversity, however, is considered by many as broadly inadequate and heavily reliant on a largely discredited essentialist and deterministic view of culture. This manifests itself in two ways. Firstly, the content of business management courses in higher education tends to draw upon the dominant paradigm in Cross-Cultural Management (CCM), which is increasingly considered to lag behind current thinking in conceptual trends in social science. This has the consequences for the treatment of culture and diversity when analysing and explaining behaviour and issues in the globalised workplace. Secondly, a poor understanding of the concept of cultural diversity has an impact on how administration and academic systems and structures in universities actually engage with international students to overcome what are perceived as problems or difficulties in adjustment to university life in an unfamiliar context. Addressing these two issues requires, on the one hand, a better understanding of the concepts of culture and cultural diversity in the teaching of international business, drawing on contemporary research and approaches within the broader social sciences, and, on the other, a sense of how cross-cultural and intercultural processes work to develop a true sense of interculturality both in the experience of internationalised business education and what students will eventually take into the global workplace. This article explores these concepts and issues and proposes that an understanding of interculturality should be at the heart of a global approach to higher education
The world as police
Get PDFThis article argues that colonial modernity birthed the police as a world-shaping force that came to define both civil society and the world itself. By staging a relationship between plantation Barbados and Kant’s Enlightenment, I suggest that the transformation from European frontier to established world required subjugating violence to be everywhere made pervasive and entrenched. The ascent to humanity under colonial modernity conjoined the construction of whiteness to the subjugation and death of Black people. As such, the supposed absorption of enslavement into legal frameworks became the pre-condition for its continuation as white collective society was strengthened through and as policing Black people. Since the literal blood and sand of the colonised continue to be the grounds of white life, the question of abolition thus requires us to reach far beyond the institution of the police
