In correspondence valued an active dialogue over time, and the wider meaning of correspondence was also significant; correspondence as a correlation, comparison or equivalence between two or more objects or parts which related to a mutual interest in space and composition, in painting and its histories. The approach taken responded to a porousness and openness to spatial circumstance, to architecture, a mutual sensibility for the positioning of a viewer/ participant and an understanding of the duration of experience. Interdisciplinary limits of creative business education
Get PDFThis article investigates the disciplinary denials of subjectivities and pluriversal nature of creative business education, examining the interdisciplinary limits of its curriculum produced in response to neoliberal crisis in business education. While creative business education is depicted as an alternative way out to regain the legitimacy of mainstream business school education and its dynamism, the programmes often recycled that upholds market values of compliant culture that destroys creativity of labour and the criticality of educational process. It highlights the continuity and growth of alienation within the interdisciplinary praxis of creative business education. It argues against the use of language, methods and conceptual narratives of traditional business education within creative business education for a radical transformation of business praxis that values people, planet and society
Semantic segmentation under adverse conditions: a weather and nighttime-aware synthetic data-based approach
Get PDFRecent semantic segmentation models perform well under standard weather conditions and sufficient illumination but struggle with adverse weather conditions and nighttime. Collecting and annotating training data under these conditions is expensive, time-consuming, error-prone, and not always practical. Usually, synthetic data is used as a feasible data source to increase the amount of training data. However, just directly using synthetic data may actually harm the model’s performance under normal weather conditions while getting only small gains in adverse situations. Therefore, we present a novel architecture specifically designed for using synthetic training data for domain adaptation. We propose a simple yet powerful addition to DeepLabV3+ by using weather and time-of-the-day supervisors trained with multi-task learning, making it both weather and nighttime aware, which improves its mIoU accuracy by 14 percentage points on the ACDC dataset while maintaining a score of 75% mIoU on the Cityscapes dataset. “Made in Hong Kong”: the (re)production of publicness in the cinematic urban topography of contemporary Hong Kong
Get PDFThis chapter explores the cinematic representation of the socio-spatial (re)production of publicness in contemporary Hong Kong, by analysing a series of Hong Kong city films. The chapter argues that Hong Kong urban cinema has demonstrated a cinematic urban topography of the city and the fluid urban space engendered by everyday practices. By highlighting different types of urban spaces represented in the films, it examines how Hong Kong urban cinema shows deliberate layers of the city in terms of physical, social and psychological factors. Then, the chapter will shed light on the cinematic representation of the spatial appropriations of public space and the blurred public-private boundary in Hong Kong, as well as the reduction of this fluidity against a privatised urban environment. It concludes by showing how cinematic materials could be applied in urban studies relating to the historical urban milieu and a chronological study of everyday spatial appropriations in Hong Kong. At the same time, based on a general consideration of the local social background, this study offers an insight and an interdisciplinary visual method to examine the relationship between the urban strategic plan and people’s everyday socio-spatial practices in a dynamic urban context
A Land Apart
Get PDFThis practice-led research project: 'A Land Apart', is continuing the research: 'Fragile Lines', investigating the conflictive relationship between the natural crustal movement landscape and national boundaries that people created. The project 'A Land Apart' is a rethinking and re-centring of the critical connection between political individuality and global community, and is deliberately implicit rather than explicit and is intended as a hidden element within the work. According to Brown's study, material culture can be "regarded as a methodological branch of cultural history or cultural anthropology and material culture is the objective aspect of cultural research" (1982, p.13). In this project, a textile installation artwork, 'A Land Apart', as the practical research outcome, demonstrates the complex relations between lands, humans and community development. Political borders often only exist as lines on maps, linking to Benedict Anderson's (1983) concept of 'imagined communities in which national borders may be arbitrary, but national identity is formed as a potent socio-political construct. Indeed, these invisible lines have a powerful and sometimes catastrophic effect on peoples' lives through events such as wars, migration and earthquakes. These are local events that have global or transnational repercussions. The work 'A Land Apart' aims to bring these complex situations together as an aesthetic encounter
