    A study of Hard times

    No full text
Hard Times (1854) is a novel full of Dickens's critical comments on the Victorian society. Two worlds are depicted in this novel. One is the world which attaches great importance to facts. The other is the world which regards fancy and imagination as important. The former is the world of Thomas Gradgrind who is a retired wholesale hardware merchant and Josiah Bounderby who is a boastful and wealthy manufacturer. The latter is the world of a circus troupe. Dickens indicates the harmful effects on the people, especially children caused by the strict rule of facts, contrasting the world of facts with the world of imagination. The aim of this paper is to make clear Dickens's attitude towards the social problems, especially educational problems, with reference to the world of facts.Hard Times (1854) is a novel full of Dickens's critical comments on the Victorian society. A review of the concept of discourse: focusing on the difference between the perspectives of Van Dijk and Fairclough

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to reconsider the concept of `discourse', spotlighting the viewpoints of the paradigm of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). `Discourse' has been diversely defined by leading theorists depending on their disciplines, such as linguistics, sociolinguistics, and sociology including ethnomethodology or Foucault's theory of knowledge / power. First, we review lexical meaning of `discourse' as it is defined in various dictionaries. Then, we outline various sociolinguistic definitions of the term in reference to Discourse Analysis. The main discussion consists of two parts which deal with the frame of reference in CDA. The first examines Van Dijk's concept of `discourse' and the second reviews Fairclough's argument that `discourse' is language use conceived as social practice. The cluster was set in order to apply intake data according to food group of 1 person per day of the 264 households in respect of the cluster analysis by the K-means method, and in order to the dispersion between clusters become biggest by the setting of the cluster number in 4, and got clustery features and nutrient energy ratio and fill-rate were analyzed, and a following knowledge was obtained. Intake pattern which ran the meal of the small eclipse was most large group, and there was nutritionally a problem on this group. The group which ran modern meal and traditional meal otherwise existed. .The cluster was set in order to apply intake data according to food group of 1 person per day of the 264 households in respect of the cluster analysis by the K-means method, and in order to the dispersion between clusters become biggest by the setting of the cluster number in 4, and got clustery features and nutrient energy ratio and fill-rate were analyzed, and a following knowledge was obtained. Research on the cooking habits among college students

    Get PDF
A survey was conducted among 204 college freshman to investigate their cooking habits. Almost all of them lived in the Tokai area (Gifu, Aichi, and Mie Prefectures), and 72% of them lived with their families. We found that students living with their families rarely prepared meals at home. However, more than 55% of them liked cooking and less than 7% of them disliked it. Having a specialty dish, the frequency or time spent for preparing a meal depended on whether they like or dislike cooking. We found that we must consider the contents of cooking practices because some of them could not prepare Japanese stocks, could not peel apples, and could not cook fish.A survey was conducted among 204 college freshman to investigate their cooking habits. Creation of computer search system for Haiga

    No full text
Since 1992, in order to develop students' creative and descriptive potential ability for creating English haiku (traditional Japanese short poems) and digital haiga (seasonal picture-poem of Japan), the authors have been searching for ways in which students can study how to master the spirit of communication activities all over the world through the Internet. In the process of creating digital contents, we have tried to make a digital database of haiga and searching system on the website. In this paper, we discuss the methods and benefits of educational effect of building a haiga database and searching system and of reporting how to utilize it in the Internet.Since 1992, in order to develop students' creative and descriptive potential ability for creating English haiku (traditional Japanese short poems) and digital haiga (seasonal picture-poem of Japan), the authors have been searching for ways in which students can study how to master the spirit of communication activities all over the world through the Internet. Modelling of a synchronous replication system for disaster recovery

    Get PDF
As the Information technology has remarkably developed, business data has computerized. It is fatal for business to lose the data by a disaster. In order to avoid data loss and stagnation of business activity by a disaster, remote replication by using network link has been adopted. Remote replication enables data protection and faster business restart in the event of a disaster. This paper considers the problem of reliability in a server system with a synchronous replication for disaster recovery. We formulate a stochastic model of a server system which consists of a monitor server, a main site and a backup site. A client data in main site is replicated between main site and backup site. We derive the probabilities of switching backup site and system failure, the expected number of data replication. As the Information technology has remarkably developed, business data has computerized. This paper describes the details of the early major Hindu caves of Pallavas such as at Mandagapattu, Mamandur, Daravanur and so on, and also studies the spatial composition of the caves. Pallavas, one of the major dynasty in north Tamil region, seems to have strong effect ion to the later south Indian architecture not only design but the arrangement of the space. To take account of the number and the deity of the shrine, the concept of the planning is to be clear; namely Siva is to be enshrined in the single and quintuple sanctum, though the Trimurty in the triple sanctums .This paper describes the details of the early major Hindu caves of Pallavas such as at Mandagapattu, Mamandur, Daravanur and so on, and also studies the spatial composition of the caves.
