A Study of the Difference of Thoughtways between Literally Based Culture and Orally Rooted Culture : Is a Reader a Traveler?
Get PDFThis paper deals with a comparatively abstract thesis of thoughtways: literate culture vs oral culture; "scientific" thinking vs "non-scientific" thinking which we imagine might be superior in reasoning. To our modern eyes, it seems that we have a tendency to rely on a so-called scientific way of thinking so as to seek "truth" from facts. Our standing point of this study, however, is guided by the idea that we might not recognize the superiority and flexibility in "rational" thinking which would stem from an oral way of expressing and thinking. We attempt to shine a glaring light on an oral mode of thinking, referring to selected texts such as Michel de Certeau, Ivan Illich, Walter J. Issues on English education at elementary schools in Japan : Should we teach pupils English earlier and more formally?
Get PDFIn 2013, the Japanese government announced a plan to change the curriculum of public elementary schools beginning 2020. In the new curriculum, English education will start at the third grade. For fifth and sixth graders, English will be taught more formally as a subject, and the number of classes will be doubled. This paper considers issues related to the new curriculum. First, it reviews previous studies and examines the effectiveness of early foreign language instructions, in terms of language acquisition as well as children’s motivation toward foreign language learning. Second, it considers the teacher training plans of the government and the perceptions of the elementary school teachers toward the new curriculum. Third, it discusses the relevance of the policy making process. The paper concludes that early foreign language education is not effective in terms of developing language skills or enhancing student motivation. Therefore, the paper recommends more efficient use of resources by the government, and cautions about the considerable burden of the new curriculum to the elementary school children as well as to the teachers.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFThe Gifu City Women’s College moved from Nagarafukumitsu to Hitoichibakitamachi in 2000. This report intends to describe order of events of the relocation in the newspaper. According to records, the trigger of the relocation was due to the deterioration and narrowness of the old campus buildings, and the change of the environment around the site. In addition, requests from the community for the higher education facilities forced the campus transfer. It was in 1989 that the mayor of Gifu City expressed his desire for the relocation to the city council and from that time, it took 11 years to complete. Meanwhile, proposed sites for the new campus changed from Kidaijiyama to Shimokidaiji, to Koran and then to Hitoichiba.departmental bulletin pape
Songs to Gods or Goddess Performed Officially : A Case of Sarahama, Irabu-Island of Okinawa
Get PDFPriests who perform rituals for community are called Tukasanma in Sarahama, Irabu-island of Okinawa. Even among Tukasanmas, those who offer songs to gods or goddess are called Kakaranma. Tukasanma (Kakaranma) usually are chosen by drawing lots from married women who live in Sarahama. But, since that women have become to refuse to take the Tukasanma (Kakaranma) in recent years, and the position of Tukasanma (Kakaranma) becomes vacant at present, so songs offered to gods or goddess have not been passed down to the next generation. On the other hand, the women who once took the Kakaranma have become to sing those songs officially in public places recently. Ssikkim-Kuts, the traditional ritual performed by priests, has been performed officially in Chindo- island, Korea, too. Comparing with the case of Ssikkim-Kuts, Chindo-island in Korea, this article is about to study Kakaranma’s songs performed officially in public places.departmental bulletin pape

Associations of maternal vitamin D intake during pregnancy with asthma and other allergies in Japanese infants
Get PDFVitamin D is known to have an immunological effect and may play an important role in allergic diseases. We investigated the associations of maternal intake of vitamin D during pregnancy with the risks of allergies in infants. Subjects were from a birth cohort constructed prenatally. Maternal intake of vitamin D during pregnancy was evaluated using a 5-day dietary record. After birth, 312 children were followed for physician-diagnosed allergic diseases until the ages of approximately 3 and 5 years old. As compared with the lowest, the highest maternal vitamin D intake from diet plus supplements during pregnancy was significantly associated with a reduced risk of physician-diagnosed asthma in children younger than 3 years of age after controlling for potential confounders. Statistically significant trends were also observed (p=0.006). Relative to the lowest, the highest maternal vitamin D intake was associated with an increased risk of eczema in children under 3 years old. The results of this study suggest that the maternal intake of vitamin D during pregnancy is inversely associated with asthma and positively associated with atopic eczema in infants.departmental bulletin pape
