Get PDFTobacco use has been linked to numerous negative health impacts and, in 2014, eight million deaths were attributable to tobacco use globally. Despite a decline in smoking across regions and globally, over 80 percent of the world’s tobacco users live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with implications for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is recognized that action to reduce tobacco consumption must take place within LMICs. Economic interventions for controlling tobacco consumption and measures to control tobacco demand – such as taxation – have been shown in the literature to be highly effective. However, research has primarily focused on high-income countries and there is a need for empirical, country-specific studies, that take into account the contextual priorities of LMICs
Human rights and healthy diet research support initiative : scoping review
Get PDFThe African region is facing the double burden of malnutrition driven by changing food environments and the increasing availability, affordability, and acceptability of unhealthy food, which in turn raises major health and sustainability concerns. This report argues that human rights can play a powerful role in supporting State-led policies intended to promote healthier food environments and prevent diet-related diseases. It reviews the growing academic literature and policy documents at the intersection of human rights and food environments and identifies the relevant international legal treaties and conventions that can be used to support the integration of a human rights-based approach to promote healthy food environments and therefore prevent diet-related diseases, particularly in Africa

Peace on the fringe : exploring how private enterprise contributes to SDG 16
Get PDFThis article studies the role of business in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions - to explore the processes and practices of peacebuilding and the impact on achieving the targets of SDG 16. In particular, we study an extreme context of post-conflict entrepreneurship. We study entrepreneurial ventures where ex-combatants seek to create economic opportunities and challenge the status quo of poverty and inequality in their rural communities. We develop several qualitative case studies of ex-combatant entrepreneurship to identify the activities that enable them to promote and consolidate peace while managing their businesses. We find that these ex-combatant ventures contribute to SDG 16 and identify a matrix of stakeholder engagement for organizing the variety of multi-stakeholder arrangements required of both venture success and peacebuilding efforts
