Raspberry Pi based recording system for acoustic monitoring of bird species
Get PDFSevere degradation of ecosystems due to human encroachment and climate change call for close monitoring of the ecosystems in order to conserve them. Ecosystems have a lot of acoustic data that can be used to study changes taking place in them remotely. In this paper, we present an acoustic system that is based on the Raspberry Pi and is used to collect audio recordings for use in acoustic monitoring of birds. The system has been designed to work optimally in the field. It has been able to collect good quality acoustic data of several bird species during its pilot deployment. Acoustic data collected over a reasonable amount of time will be used to create datasets that will be used in developing machine learning models for automatic classification of bird species. Published studies and grey literature were sought. This search included an analysis of legislation, policies, programs, and projects of national and sub-national governments with main emphasis on above-mentioned highly vulnerable populations. We sought to identify the main policies implemented, the health priorities for the countries and the main gaps in health care and rights, outputs, outcomes, and impact as well as research studies and how they relate to the policies in place. No full textClimate change is causing coastal erosion and salinisation of groundwater and lagoons in the Volta delta region in Ghana. This has adversely affected fishing and agricultural livelihoods of coastal communities. The lack of opportunities to earn a living locally has led to the migration of able-bodied males, leaving behind the highest proportion of female headed households in Ghana. No full textThe deadly impacts of extreme heat are rising globally. Heatwaves are causing an increase in morbidity and mortality rates and corresponding financial losses across the globe. Cities are particularly vulnerable to extreme heatwaves. Rapid urbanisation and associated impacts, including: increasing concrete infrastructure, deforestation, filling up of water bodies, increasing amounts of dry and impervious surfaces, diverse economic activities, and the adverse impacts of climate change; all serve to exacerbate the heat island effect in cities. However, extreme heat impacts are preventable. Cities have a unique potential to adapt to changing heat risks through effective risk management at multiple levels; connecting policies and incentives and strengthening community adaptive capacity. Cities need to undertake a comprehensive plan for early warning systems, effective preparedness and adaptive measures to combat the impacts of extreme heatwaves.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherland

Querying hippocampal replay with subcortical inputs
Get PDFDuring sleep, the hippocampus recapitulates neuronal patterns corresponding to behavioral trajectories during previous experiences. This hippocampal replay supports the formation of long-term memories. Yet, whether replay originates within the hippocampal circuitry or is initiated by extrahippocampal inputs is unknown. Here, I review recent findings regarding the organization of neuronal activity upstream to the hippocampus, in the head-direction (HD) and grid cell networks, and its relationship to replay. I argue that hippocampal activity at the onset of replay is under the influence of signals from primary spatial areas. In turn, hippocampal replay resets the HD network activity to select a new direction for the next replay event. This reciprocal interaction between the HD network and the hippocampus may be essential in grounding meaning to hippocampal activity, specifically by training decoders of hippocampal sequences. Brief 2 : community-based participatory research methodology
Get PDFThe study focuses on the models used by community advice offices in the South African provinces of Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga during the period 2016 to 2018. Case management strategies were investigated, a cost-benefit analysis conducted and the perceptions of CBPs and service recipients on different aspects of community-based justice delivery were explored. This brief describes the research design and strategy followed in this study, which was driven by the community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. The methods used for sampling, data collection and data analysis are discussed. The reliability and validity of findings are considered in the context of the mixed-methods approach that was used. Ethical considerations and the possible limitations of the research design are discussed, as well as benefits that were found related to the use of the CBPR approach.
