    Labour, automation, and human-machine communication

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) systems have been deployed and implemented in a variety of economic sectors. These developments have contributed to increasing fears of worker replacement by machines. However, instead of completely replacing workers, in most cases, they have led to the transformation of existing jobs and cooperation relations—frequently conflicting—between workers and machines. In this chapter, we explore three types of relations between workers and AI in the workplace: human-to-machine communication, human-with-machine communication, and machine-to-human communication. We argue that these relationships and the need for human-machine communication in the constant development of artificial intelligence have blurred the boundaries between the development, customization, and deployment of AI. We conclude that, while the cooperation between humans and AI will remain essential in productive activities, the quality of these relationships—and especially the power relations between these actors—will be a fundamental object of study

Latest version of CDKN's interactive training game explores climate risk in Latin America

    No full text
How would you feel if you faced climate hazards - in someone else’s shoes? How would your age, your physical and mental abilities, your health, the way other people treat you affect how you could respond? What if different members of the community got together to tackle climate-related problems? What would your role be? How could you make the most of your potential? This new edition of the 'Climate and Society Game' brings the interactive role-play to Latin America. It uses a colourful cast of characters set in a fictional town of Ecuador or elsewhere in the Andean region (e.g. Colombia, Peru) to explore exactly these questions about climate risks and solutions

Gaining access to long-term production data is one of the biggest challenges to climate change adaptation policy planning. The project team successfully engaged the government in the analysis and review process of the Ghana Cocoa Board’s long-term big data sets (over seventy years of production data at multiple scales). Analysis improved the capacity of key stakeholders to understand the inter-relationships between the environment /climate, farming, and people’s lives and livelihoods. The process helped consolidate in-country partnerships including with the Forestry Commission, Cocoa Board, Forestry Research Institute of Ghana, Environment Protection Agency, relevant District Assemblies and Tropenbos Ghana

Business and social outcomes of gender-smart technical assistance activities in small and medium enterprises : building the evidence base for gender lens investing

    Get PDF
Gender lens investing is growing as the business case becomes more evident. Those involved in gender lens investing are testing different approaches expanding beyond investing in women-owned or women-led companies, companies that promote workplace equity, and companies providing products or services that improve the lives of women and girls. One such approach involves investors supporting their portfolio of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with gender-smart technical assistance (TA) activities, which is the focus of this research. TA engagements with SMEs aim to improve gender equality internally within business operations and externally across value chains while enhancing companies’ business performance. This research measured the effectiveness of seven types of TAs provided to 21 SMEs across four sectors and three regions. The study confirms that TA activities contribute to positive business and social outcomes for companies and their stakeholders such as employees, customers, distributors, and producers.United States Agency for International Development (USAID

Efficacy of different front-of-package labeling systems in changing purchase intention and product healthfulness perception for food products in Argentina

    Get PDF
Objectives. To identify the front-of-package scheme—Multiple Traffic Light (MTL), Nutri-Score (NS), and black octagon Warning System (WS)—most effective in reducing purchase intention and perceived product healthfulness of drinking yogurts, cookies and cheese spreads, and to assess the joint influence of nutrient claims on the effects. Methods. Randomized-controlled experiment. A within-subjects factorial design was used to evaluate the influence of three independent factors on perceived product healthfulness and purchase intention. A total of 704 adults in Argentina were shown three mock-up products and asked to indicate which product they would buy choosing between pairs of products from different categories and to rate product healthfulness on a 7-point Likert scale. Results. The WS was the most effective in reducing purchase intention in drinking yogurts (OR:0.16, 95%CI: 0.09;0.28), cookies (OR:0.10, 95%CI: 0.05;0.18) and cheese spreads (OR:0.10, 95%CI: 0.05;0.18), and the perception of healthfulness (WS Mean score 3,63 vs No label 4,24, p<0.001), regardless of the participants’ gender, age, and level of education. NS was inefficacious in reducing product healthfulness perception, while MTL had significantly increased how healthful the product was perceived (p<0.001). Conclusions. In line with growing evidence, our findings support that WS perform better than NS and MTL in reducing purchase intention and healthfulness perception of products with excessive amounts of critical nutrients associated with the greatest burden of diseases. Front-of-package WS are expected to facilitate the population in Argentina to make healthier decisions
