¿Qué evidencia cuenta? : explorando el recorrido de la evidencia durante la crisis del covid-19 en el Ministerio de vivienda en Panamá
Get PDFThis paper explores how is evidence gathered, transformed, and selected during the current COVID-19 crisis, employing Panama’s housing ministry as a case study. We wish to better understand evidence pathways and provide strategies for increasing scientific evidence uptake. Our research strategy was organized into a three-step sequential model: 1. The evidence-gathering phase: we studied Covid-19’s effects on households by deploying 135 surveys (n=135). 2. The evidence transformation phase: studying housing sector evidence assembled by different ministry divisions via 12 surveys and interviews with ministry personnel (n=12), and 3. The evidence selection phase: studying evidence employed by decision-makers, through a semi-structured interview with the housing minister (n=1). Results show that evidence pathways depend on social phenomena, including internal and external political power negotiations, social class identities, and representations of the role of government

No full textTrade Facilitation Office Canada (TFO Canada), with the financial assistance of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the technical support of TFO Canada Dr. Yiagadeesen Samy (Director, Normal Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University) and regional research organizations- Centre for Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) and Mekong Institute (MI), worked in partnership and implemented an innovative initiative to produce research on trade and women’s economic empowerment, build capacity of stakeholders and disseminate knowledge on women’s inclusion in trade. The research project ‘’Women in trade Knowledge Platform to Boost Inclusive and Sustainable Growth’’ has completed its third year in December 2022 and met its objectives. The objective of the research project is to examine the relationship between trade and job creation for women, and the extent to which these jobs contribute to women’s economic empowerment. The research project uses both original survey data and qualitative methods to answer the following research questions as they relate to Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs): 1). Why – and under what circumstances – do some trade sectors create more jobs for women and others do not? 2). To what extent are the jobs created contributing to women’s economic empowerment? 3). What strategies and policies are needed to ensure these sectors work optimally? The project focused on six developing and least developed countries (LDCs) in South-East Asia: Cambodia and Vietnam and Sub-Saharan Africa: Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Madagascar

Comprehensive overview of education during three COVID-19 pandemic periods : impact on engineering students in Sri Lanka
Get PDFThe study provided an overview of changes in the educational system due to the COVID-19 pandemic among engineering undergraduates of Sri Lanka. Results show that students’ attendance in online classes improved over time compared to the initial pandemic period. Nearly 50% of students’ family income was impacted- either stopped or reduced due to the pandemic. Most students have issues regarding computing devices, internet connectivity, and the home environment, which are not conducive to learning at home. Under normal circumstances, engineering undergraduates in Sri Lanka have high exposure to modern technology and a diversity of instructional delivery, hence this student cohort was chosen for the study

No full textTanzania Water Partnership (TWP) in collaboration with Department of Water Resources Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania; Department of Civil Engineering and Environment, Makerere University in Uganda; and Department of Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering, Moi University in Kenya jointly applied and implemented the IDRC funded project titled Building Capacity in Water Engineering For Addressing Sustainable Development Goals In East Africa (CAWESDEA). The project was conceived out of collaborative efforts between the partnering institutions, starting way back in 2017 when TWP submitted a concept note to IDRC in response to a call for the programme titled Strengthening Engineering Ecosystem in sub-Saharan Africa. TWP led the efforts of developing the concept note into a project proposal of which was funded by IDRC after going through due diligence processes. The CAWESDEA project was designed to cover 3 years - starting from October 1st 2018 and ending in September 2021. However, due to unprecedented global COVID19 Pandemic, the project was extended by four months up to February 2022. Thus, this report provides an account of the implementation trajectory of the CAWESDEA project

This brief uses the “Evaluation of IDRC’s Contribution to Building Leading Organizations” to share lessons on how to incorporate organizational strengthening. It suggests questions to consider in program design and implementation, with the aim of informing how research for development (R4D) funders can foster leading organizations and networks
