Ensuring business innovation fundamentals : exploring equity, diversity and inclusion in small and medium sized enterprises (MSMES) of Nepal
Innovation in MSMEs is the key driver of productivity and long-term growth. However, a study done to assess the experience of enterprises in twelve South Asian countries has listed six South Asian countries, including Nepal as poor performer in terms of innovation, production, and export performance. United Nations ESCAP (2011) has highlighted the dominance of SMEs in business communities of Nepal, which make up more than 95% of all enterprises. Given the importance of MSME sector, the government of Nepal has introduced business-support programs to encourage the creation of enterprises, especially with a view of generating employment, import substitution, poverty alleviation, and economic growth. Micro-Enterprise Development for Poverty Alleviation (MEDPA) and Youth and Small Entrepreneur Self-Employment Fund Programme (YSEF) are two flagship innovation support programs (ISPs) in Nepal that provide a wide range of support services to the MSMEs. With the aim of addressing the social and economic aspects, those ISPs have aimed to improve the economic and social condition of low-income and socially backward families through micro-enterprises development, self-employment promotion and entrepreneurship, especially among the youth and women by curbing down the labor migration and promoting domestic production

Lessons for macroeconomic policy from Nigeria amid the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has had severe impacts on Nigeria’s macroeconomy and the livelihoods of households. The economy suffered from a recession in the third quarter of 2020, however, key sectors including telecommunications and information services (15.9%), financial institutions (13.34%), and quarrying and other minerals (21.16%) continued to experience significant growth, which led to a recovery. The Nigerian government has responded notably to address the pandemic’s impact on the economy. So far, $ 1.4 billion in additional spending has been executed, which is estimated at 0.3% of GDP. This paper examines the macroeconomic landscape and policy interventions in Nigeria with the objective of developing lessons not only for Nigeria but for other developing economies
Uganda and COVID-19 : macroeconomic policy responses to the pandemic
To contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government of Uganda implemented a cocktail of macroeconomic policy responses addressing the contraction of activities in the real and financial sector, and the impact on Ugandans’ livelihoods. Specifically, the government adopted expansionary fiscal and monetary policies to address the impact of the pandemic on the economy, with positive results. First, Uganda’s early response to the COVID-19 pandemic averted a huge cost in human terms. Second, the expansionary monetary and fiscal policies implemented to mitigate the economic impact of the lockdown prevented an adverse dampening of the economy. The expansionary fiscal policy gave businesses temporal liquidity and mitigated the extent of household poverty. In addition, it ensured that the financial sector remained stable, albeit with reduced profitability

Agriculture and food security (AFS) : building a new generation of female PhD fellows in gender, agriculture and food security in East Africa
The overarching goal of this project was to build a pipeline of experts who would l contribute to finding homegrown solutions to the pressing development challenges at the nexus of agriculture, food security and gender. Further, we sought to remedy the under-representation of women by investing in young female fellows in East Africa, who face unique barriers to their participation and advancement in knowledge sectors, and who are poised to contribute innovative ideas and unique perspectives. We also aimed to develop highly trained and policy-oriented female African thought leaders, who could add to timely and credible discussions relevant to this topic in the public and decision-making spheres. More specifically, we aimed to equip young African women to conduct high quality research in this critical nexus area, and position them to be future leaders in their fields
