    L’Unione europea può essere democratica?

    Get PDF
It is well known that Ralf Dahrendorf raised concerns about the functioning of the European Union as a democratic institution. In his opinion, the most authentic and exclusive roots of the democratic experience can be found only within the nation-state. This historical, cultural and institutional aspect cannot be easily reproduced outside the context of the State. In Dahrendorf’s opinion it was essential that the EU Member States be democratic but to give a democratic character to Europe it was not necessary to transform the EU into a sort of Moloch State. This essay addresses the dilemma about European democracy highlighted by Dahrendorf, investigates why and how the EU has tried to build its democratic political system and the causes of the failure of this process. It examines the nature of democracy in a European continent with very wide borders and reflects on the various political crises that threaten its integration. In particular, it highlights the inadequacy of national democracies in managing transnational economies and policies and the possible effects of the populist conjuncture. The participation of citizens and political representation in its various forms of territorial expression remain the basis of a project of innovation in democratic practice that must not leave room for harmful alternatives

Fantasia e creatività in Bruno Munari

    Get PDF
The essay aims to outline the poetics underlying the whole activity of Bruno Munari, a unique and polyhedric character having been an artist, a designer and, last but not least, a creator of educational workshops for children aimed at developing a creative learning process; activities that, despite their discreet appearance, are interwoven. According to the three classic distinctions between "Munari-Artist", "Munari-Designer" and "Munari-Pedagogist", none of these three poles is comprehensible without presupposing the other two: among them is persisting an intrinsic as mandatory and dynamic correlation that, if broken or overlooked, undermines any chance to understand the unity of the "Munari-Universe". This unity resides in the conception that Munari has of art: conceived as an activity at the service of life to be born out of life itself as a reality in continuous transformation, art finds its focal point in creativity that on turn, understood as integration of rule and chance, logic and fantasy, technique and play, functionality and unrestricted availability, necessity and freedom, is also recognized as the distinctive character of human intelligence

Grapevine, esca complex, and environment: the disease triangle

    Get PDF
This review compiles the available knowledge on the triple impact of host-pathogens-environment in the progress of the esca disease complex of grapevine. The perennial crop grapevine encounters different biotic and abiotic factors responsible for numerous changes at the various growth stages. This review provides increased understanding of the esca disease complex, with emphasis on (1) the nature of esca-associated fungi as endophytes or pathogens in grapevine, (2) the importance of grapevine genotype and age in relation to resistance or susceptibility to the pathogens, (3) the significant effects of climatic changes, especially drought, on pathogen development and symptomatology, and (4) the physio-biochemical changes in the grapevines arising from the biotic and abiotic interactions. Drought often provides conditions favouring disease development in plants. Physiological and biochemical changes in plants play critical roles in this topic. The constantly increasing economic impacts of esca disease in many grape-producing countries, and the broad lack of knowledge so far, require precise studies on the transcriptional responses to biotic and abiotic factors in grapevines, as effects of “climate change” develop. On the viticultural side, improved management of water and adjusted nutrition balance in vineyards may become useful strategies to mitigate the widespread damage caused by grapevine wood pathogens

Distribution of large-spored Alternaria species associated with early blight of potato and tomato in Algeria

    Get PDF
Potato and tomato are important crops in Algerian agriculture, and both are threatened by abiotic and biotic stresses, and early blight is a major disease affecting both crops. Surveys carried out from 2012 to 2015 in 12 major growing regions for these crops yielded a total of 247 Alternaria isolates having morphological and cultural characteristics of sections Alternaria and Porri. Since early blight symptoms and morphological characteristics of the isolates did not allow sharp distinction between the different large-spored species of Alternaria, the isolates in section Porri, often considered primary causes of the diseases, were selected for molecular characterization by diagnostic PCR using specific primers. This allowed species identification of 147 Alternaria isolates as A. solani, A. protenta, A. grandis or A. linariae. These species were present on potato and tomato crops at varying frequencies, depending on the hosts and on bioclimatic locations. Pathogenicity tests for the four species, on detached leaflets and whole seedlings, showed that all were pathogenic to potato and tomato, with varying virulence. These results suggest that parasitic specialization of these Alternaria species on solanaceous plants should be reconsidered

“Non te la caverai, poeta…”. Alcune note sui Sette sonetti di Michelangelo, tradotti da Vjačeslav Ivanov

The article examines a recent bilingual illustrated edition of Seven Sonnets by Michelangelo translated by Vjačeslav Ivanov. Placing the interest in Michelangelo in the context of the European cultural scene at the beginning of the 20th century, the author observes that Ivanov changed his attitude towards the Italian poet when he was translating the sonnets, thanks to the influence of Simmel’s thought, which Ivanov likely began to consider because of Ol’ga Šor. She was connected with the State Academy of Artistic Sciences (gakhn), where the authority of the German philosopher was profound, in particular for his seminal works about Goethe, Michelangelo and Rembrandt. During the process of translating Michelangelo (1925-1926), Ivanov and Šor exchanged several letters on the subject, in which Michelangelo’s tragic nature is no longer seen in a demoniac dimension, typical of the Symbolist vision of the turn of the century, but is articulated in a more neo-Platonic perspective, in a re-evaluation of the Renaissance, no longer opposed to the medieval religious vision. This shift in point of view also substantially influences the practice of Ivanov’s translation, as Šor astutely recognizes. The article examines a recent bilingual illustrated edition of Seven Sonnets by Michelangelo translated by Vjačeslav Ivanov. Where Are We in Europe? Two Literary Maps of the Continent in Renaissance Epic Poetry (Luís Vaz de Camões and Maciej Stryjkowski)

    Get PDF
In my paper I discuss two representations of Europe in epic poems by Maciej Stryjkowski and Luís Vaz de Camões. Both poets lived at opposite ends of the continent but they both attempted to respond to the cartographic revolution they witnessed. The increasing importance of maps caused several problems. Stryjkowski and Camões were also witnesses of political troubles in their own countries. One of the most important tasks was placing their own country (and nation) on the map of Europe and the world. This raised questions of symbolic and real hierarchy in cartographic representations, national pride and its cartographical identity. Poets who produced their own ‘self-made maps’ dealt with this problem in different ways, and this paper focuses on these poetic practices. Two of them are cartographical imitations and use rhetorical figures to translate a chart into a poetic map. In my paper I discuss two representations of Europe in epic poems by Maciej Stryjkowski and Luís Vaz de Camões. This contribution is a report on the Slavic Studies Conference held at the University of Udine from 28th to 30th November 2018, directed at doctoral students and recent PhDs in Slavic studies and devoted to the topic Forms of Intertextuality. From Quotation to Allusion. The aim of the conference was to investigate intertextuality in all its vastness, and to further the discussion among young scholars by exploring the various forms and functions of intertextuality (from quotation to allusion to imitation, rewriting or translation) in a broad interdisciplinary exchange with contributions relating to literature, philology, linguistics, cinema, music and dance. This report summarizes some papers presented at the conference and examines the main ideas that emerged during the discussion. This contribution is a report on the Slavic Studies Conference held at the University of Udine from 28th to 30th November 2018, directed at doctoral students and recent PhDs in Slavic studies and devoted to the topic Forms of Intertextuality. Correspondances. Paul Klee, Pierre Boulez e Jacques Maritain: quale contributo alla riflessione pedagogica e alla prassi educativa?

    Get PDF
This contribution intend to start by the hypothesis that the Music experience and the educational dimension of Art, a cause of its peculiar languages and especially if they are supported from a founded educational vision, can be a substratum where a dynamic and pluralistic thinking is capable of balancing conflicts, contradictions and diversities; a sort of attitude in front of things, nature and people, which, on the one hand, is aware of the contradictions of existence and it knows the role of variables, antinomies and paradoxes (sometimes lacerating), and, on the other, it accepts to be accompanied with they, conceived as elements of the individual existence in front of contemporary experience. Correspondences between the writings of a painter, a musician and a philosopher can give a new light to the theme about creativity in education
