It argues among other things that P.Oxy. 2311 (fr. 48 W.2) represents the first column of the Trimeters and that the Epodes were organised according to metre, from the most iambic (beginning with frr. 172-181 W.2) to the least iambic (ending with the new fragment preserved by BKT X 11, which was probably entirely dactylic)

Get PDFThe essay explores and examines in depth the connection between the ancient Grotto of Egeria on the Via Appia and the Grotto at the Medicean Villa Medici in Castello. This study deepens further this relationship, with new elements concerning the iconological level, and opens up a new horizon regarding the commission of the Medicean grotto and its patronage, focusing in particular on the role of Eleonora di Toledo in Cosimo I’s patronage. The link with the cultural Roman context of the 1530-40s is a fundamental point of view, according also to the contemporary Paduan cultural environment. This study proposes a new approach concerning the role of Benedetto Varchi in the initial history of the Medicean complex, strengthening the attribution to Varchi of the iconographic and iconological programme of the garden at Castello. The antiquarian value of the Grotto of Egeria as model for the Grotto at Castello reinforces the central position of the Medicean complex in the wider European garden history

Get PDFThe article aims to show how two drawings of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, recently published and attributed to Giorgio Vasari, should be dated instead to the mid-sixties of the sixteenth century and should be interpreted as preparatory sketches for the fountain of the Apennine in the Villa Medicea di Castello, made by the painter and architect from Arezzo with the collaboration of Bartolomeo Ammannati, between 1563 and 1565.The essay also analyzes the important changes made by Vasari in the Giunti edition of The Lives to one of the introductory chapters (How Rustic Fountains are made with Stalactites and Incrustations from Water, and how Cockle Shells and Conglomerations of vitrified Stone are built into the Stucco), precisely as a result of the role played by the artist in the arrangement of the Medici gardens

While Beccaria’s debt to French culture is self-evident, it is useful to address the impact of British culture on thought, although he read British authors mainly in French translations or in the Latin
