Citizenship and Political Agency. A Focus on Forms of Participation for Immigrants at Local Level

Immigrants’ political agency is undermined by political marginalization and disenfranchisement. Standardly citizenship acquisition is considered the key to improve immigrant’s exercise of political agency. By contrast, I propose, following Bauböck (2015), a “system of differentiated membership rights” that complements citizenship acquisition with the right to vote in local councils (based on a ius domicilii principle) and with law-making procedures based on a proportionality principle (Brighouse & Fleurbay, 2010). Distribution of power should hence be determined in proportion to people’s stakes in the decision under consideration and any time specific issues related to immigrant’s life arise, they should be provided with special tools (such as veto power) to stop any abuse from the majority

Italian Teachers: A Profession in Transition?

The teaching profession, like many others, is involved in a deep process of change. The sources of pressure are manifold: top-down, as a consequence of neo-liberalist policies and of the implementation of the logic of New Public Management and, later, of New Public Governance; bottom-up, as a result of the socio-demographic and cultural changes affecting the relationship with end-users. All of these elements are challenging teachers’ professionalism. The article questions whether teaching in Italy is currently a profession in transition and, if so, which new features are emerging. To do so, we present a locally-based case study that draws on both Hargreaves’s and Noordegraaf’s theoretical frameworks

Kinetics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by roasted Coffee during the first ten days after processing

The quality of coffee is linked to the aroma created by the chemical reactions that occur during the roasting process. While it is generally thought that roasted coffee is a stable product with a relatively long shelf-life, little information is available on the evolution (kinetic) of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the days immediately following the process. The aim of this study is to determine the evolution of VOCs released by coffee beans, on samples of Coffea arabica (three different origins) and Coffea canephora (1 single origin), by using a Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) 24 hours after roasting, and for the next 9 days. Results confirmed the differences already highlighted in previous studies between the VOCs spectra of the two species. There were also significant differences in the intensity of emissions for the different origins of Coffea arabica, with the highest VOCs amount over time always detected in the Honduras Arabica samples. The involved detected protonated ions were grouped into three classes: compounds (ppbv) present with decreasing quantity ; weakly increasing; almost constant trend; or always increasing. A complex dynamic emerged for the different protonated ions over time, which not only affects the mass spectra of the different species but also influences the configuration of the mass spectra of the different geographical zones of production

TuMV as an efficient transient vector for expressing heterologous proteins in Nicotiana tabacum and N. benthamiana

Nowadays the production of recombinant proteins such as drugs and commercial protein compounds in plants is called molecular farming. It has some benefits such as fast and large quantity production of recombinant proteins with low cost. In this research, the green fluorescent protein (GFP) was transiently expressed in two tobacco species via turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) derived vector, a virus which can infect a wide range of plant species. Florescence microscopy results indicated that TuMV could infect tobacco plants and accumulate GFP protein in plant leaves. In addition, RT-PCR, Dot-Blot and ELISA assays demonstrated the recombinant gene transcription, translation and stability. This is the first report of using TuMV-based viral vectors for producing recombinant proteins in tobacco. Optimized TuMV-based viral vectors could be used for producing recombinant proteins in tobacco

Animales y cuento popular en Jamblico, Babiloniacas

The aim of this paper is to study the role played by animals in the narrative structure of Iamblichus’ Babylonian Stories. Animals directly or indirectly give the novel’s protagonists the chance to escape from difficult situations; they make possible the constant play of mistaken identities between protagonists and secondary characters; and they reveal vital pieces of information so far unknown to the characters. Comparison with the preserved Greek novels reveals that this narrative element is much more prominent in Iamblichus than it is in any other novel. We contend that the importance of the animals’ role in the narrative may be related to the use of folktale motifs withinthe Babylonian Stories

Energy effects of buildings density with solar access analysis

The energy and environmental benefits due to the solar radiation availability in the urban contexts are very important for the microclimate and the environmental quality of cities, where spatial distribution and dimensions of buildings play a fundamental role. Understanding the effects produced by different building volumes is an important aspect and the solar access analysis represents the specific field of study. The study proposes a design methodology, developing a framework with criteria, aspects and example applications, with the aim to evaluate the energy effects related to the different volumetric configurations

Interpreting horizontality. Minor centers, intervention strategies and sustainable development

This paper presents the results of a research carried out within the framework of an Agreement between the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II and the Municipality of Aquilonia (AV). Inserted in a context of international and national studies aimed at identifying fresh cultural, strategic and operational models for new urban qualities, the research proposes ways of interpreting the city for the definition of intervention criteria also connected to a governance strategy based on the concept of networking. Moving from the specific nature of the Italian hinterland, which can be recognised as a set of horizontal cities within a vertical landscape, the research makes use of the concepts of system and network to investigate the development potential of lesser Italy.
