Japanese Engagement in Cambodia Peace Process

    Get PDF
In August 1989, the Paris Conference on the Cambodia failed in guiding the Cambodian conflict to a peaceful settlement, largely because the four factions (the State of Cambodia [SOC], the National United Front for an Independent, Peaceful, Neutral and Cooperative Cambodia [FUNCINPEC], the Khmer People’s National Front Line [KPNFL], and the Khmer Rouge [KR]) could not build an agreement on the power sharing under the interim government. At the end of 1989, the Japanese government renewed its political leading role in searching for the engagement in the Cambodian peace process. It developed its own peace plan, hoping to be able to bring a deadlock to an end. What the government proposed was to change the power sharing from the original 25 percent among all of the four factions to 50 percent between the SOC and the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea(CGDK), the latter of which included the other three factions above mentioned. Based on this plan, the Japanese government hosted the Tokyo conference in June 1990. Finally, the main parties signed the Paris Agreement on a Comprehensive Political Settlement of the Cambodia Conflict. The power sharing formula under the Supreme National Council (SNC), which the Japanese government had proposed, was thereby adopted on October 23, 1991. Through the analysis of the memoirs written by the two Japanese diplomats, in this paper, I intend to explore the aim of the peace plan and why they thought such a plan was feasible.departmental bulletin pape

The Interface between Culture and Mind: A Systemic Functional Account of Nominality

    Get PDF
Naming of experience is a basic capacity of our mind. This involves the process of conceptualizing the different types of awareness. The concepts reflect the orderliness of relations among various things, including physical objects, abstract ideas, facts, actions or whatever, which are acknowledged as such in a given culture. Nominality is such a potentiality of language that enables us to verbalize the range of concepts in a nominal expression as a meaningful unit. The present study is the first attempt of the author to give an account of the treatment of this culturally-based aspect of nominality in Japanese.departmental bulletin pape

On the Synthetic Study of Selenium- and Tellurium-Containing Heterocycles (3) Using Isoselenocyanates as a Selenium Source

    Get PDF
This review is segmented into three main parts; i.e., the preparation, structures and reactions of the five- to nine-membered selenium- and tellurium-containing heterocycles. 1) The intramolecular cyclizations of four types of dibenzyl chalcogenols, which contained one or two ethynyl groups, were carried out. 2) The reaction of selenolactones with ethynyllithium, followed by treatment with aqueous H2SO4 successfully led to a two-carbon ring expansion to give the selenium-containing seven- to nine-membered unsaturated cyclic ketones. 3) The intramolecular cyclizations of the selenols, which were generated from the isoselenocyanates and the nucleophiles, gave the selenium-containing five- or six-membered heterocycles in one-pot.departmental bulletin pape

Evaluating Interactive Style Japanese Activities in Community-based Japanese Language Classes

    Get PDF
This study aims at evaluating the interactive style Japanese language activities carried out at the Hakusan City International Exchange Salon and the circumstances leading to its introduction, a report on its implementation and an evaluation of the program. The purpose of the activity is for local Japanese people and foreigners to exchange ideas in the Japanese language. Hakusan City has carried out this activity since 2012 under the name of “Waiwai Café” on a Sunday and Thursday each month. A survey was carried out to report on the activities carried out by the participating supporters and learners and what they thought about the activities. As a result of the resarch, it was found that both the language supporters and learners positively evaluated the program and enjoyed the activities.departmental bulletin pape

A Study of the Effects on Throwing Techniques

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to obtain a new perspective from biomechanical data concerning the relationship pattern the technical characters of throwing techniques and the effect of disheveled Judogi. The subjects of the experiment, Tori (on offensive) and Uke (on defensive) were judo experts. They perform an exercise of throwing technics which are divided with three styles, (i) Osotogari, (ii) Uchimata, and (iii) Tomoenage, under two specific conditions, (A) Uke’s Obi (belt) fastened (FO) and (B) Uke’s Obi disheveled (DO). The result shows that a different displacement of the center of gravity on front-back direction is observed, and in particular the Tori played different patterns of throwing action in Tomoenage. The examination of the experiment indicates that DO has a effect on a pull-and-push motion on the front-back direction. Besides, the performance of Tomoenage under the same condition suggests that the higher level of throwing technique tend to receive some special effect of Obi’s untidiness on the performance. However, on expert performed throwing by making a good use of the disheveled Obi of Uke. This indicates the necessary of examining the positive effects of the disheveled Obi on the player’s performance.departmental bulletin pape

On Sentences Lacking Important Information in Japanese News Programs

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to analyze sentences which lack important information in Japanese TV news programs. In those programs, there have been sentences lacking grammatically required elements. For example, some sentences do not have their predicates. Others lack one or more arguments to which the verb needs to assign θ-roles and thus violate a syntactic rule, the θ-criterion. In some cases, the first sentence of one news story lacks important information, which is revealed in the following sentences of the context gradually. This paper examines those kinds of sentences in news programs, and divides them into three groups, according to how the missing information is revealed in the news story. Furthermore, this paper shows how the linguistic phenomena started diachronically, by referring to a news example in 1970s.departmental bulletin pape

Teachers’ Research in Schools―Focusing on the Double Role as Researchers and Practitioners―

    Get PDF
In this paper, I explore the methodology of teachers in their double role as researchers and practitioners studying educational systems and school issues. Initially, I analyze the role of teachers who do research in schools. Next, I examine the “duality” of the “self” based on G. H. Mead’s concept of the “social self”. Then I point out the problems teachers face when they do field studies in schools and conduct interviews of students and fellow teachers. Finally, I discuss the significance of teachers in their capacities as researchers and practitioners.departmental bulletin pape

A Preliminary Study of Noun-Predicates in Japanese

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate the possibility of how to master Japanese in a way more Japanese-like and more efficient through teaching of syntactically simple sentences composed of noun predicate. Expressions are rather natural whether in verb sentence or in adjective sentence in Chinese, while same in Japanese is found mainly in noun predicate sentence. Why? In order to make a thorough study toward such a syntactical character and take the Japanese noun predicate sentence as final research object, a try is made to pattern it on the basis of language facts. This study provides an introduction hoping to be of help both to the Chinese mother tongue’s Japanese learning and the Japanese mother tongue’s Chinese learning.departmental bulletin pape
