The Influence of Stress in the Spread of COVID-19 and Positive Meaning Derived from Negative Past Experience on University Students’ Personal Growth
Since last year, there have been stressful situations such as changes in life and fear
of the COVID-19 infection. Excessive stress can cause negative psychological states.
However, reevaluation of stressful experiences can lead to personal growth. Benefitfinding is a meaning focused form of cognitive coping with negative, stressful events.
In this study, we examined the effects of psychological stress of fearing COVID-19 and
benefit-finding on personal growth from experienced stress. A total of 270
undergraduate students participated in this study. The results showed that regardless
of the level of stress, the groups with higher scores in the benefit-finding categories of
"acceptance and self-growth", "deepening of interpersonal relationships and awareness
of warmth toward others", "awareness of the purpose of life", and "deepening of family
relationships" showed higher growth from the stress experience. The group with the
highest score in the "acquisition of new perspectives" category showed higher growth
from the stressful experience, regardless of whether the stress level related to the fear
of COVID-19 was high or low. However, the group with a high stress level had higher
scores for growth from the stressful experience than the group with a low stress le vel.
Benefit-finding in stressful situations indicated that it was possible to obtain growth
from the stressful experience. Psychological interventions using cognitive reappraisal
that modulates the experiences of college students under the stressful conditions of the
COVID-19 may lead to personal growth. departmental bulletin pape
A study of Etchū Tateyama Yūrei-mura Adauchi by Jippensha Ikku(Part1)
Tateyama in Etchū province was well known by Heian-era Japanese people as a sacred
mountain that contained an actual hell. It was believed that all Japanese who committed
sins during their lifetimes would fall into Tateyama’s hell, and that Tateyama was a sacred
site where the living could meet the dead.
Among the many works published during the second half of the Edo period by the popular
and prolific playwright and novelist Jippensha Ikku (1765~1831) are two that took up
the theme of Etchū’s Tateyama. Ikku published Etchū Tateyama Yūrei-mura Adauchi in
1808 and “Etchū Tateyama sankei kikō” in the eighteenth volume of Shokoku dōchū kane
no waraji in 1828.
The latter work has been transcribed and annotated by a number of scholars, and some
have studied it in the context of Tateyama belief; to some extent it has been introduced to
the academic world. The former work, however, has not received the same attention in
terms of transcription--it has only been quoted by a few scholars--and there has been no
introduction or analysis of the work as a whole.
It is thought that Ikku travelled to Echigo, Etchū, and Kaga in 1826, and that he based
Shokoku dōchū kane no waraji (1828) on that experience. Like one of his most famous
works, Tōkai dōchū hizakurige , it is comedic. By contrast, Etchū Tateyama Yūrei-mura
Adauchi of 1808, published twenty years earlier, was composed with then-popular revenge
novels in mind, as Ikku himself indicated at the beginning of the volume. In Ikku’s novel,
a young couple falls in love, the woman gets pregnant out of wedlock, they elope, the man
is murdered by a middle-aged male stalker, and the victim appears as a ghost to the
woman he loves. Ikku further incorporated an old story about Tateyama’s ghost town. He
thereby combined various motifs and genres to create this popular and entertaining novel.
Ikku’s two Tateyama-related works can be classified into different genres, but both
indicate a shift in perception of Tateyama from a sacred site of intense religious practice
during the classical period to a mountain that welcomes tourism and offers entertainment
during the Edo-period.
In 1814, six years after the publication of Etchū Tateyama Yūrei-mura Adauchi, while under the rulership of Kaga domain’s Maeda family, what had long been Tateyama’s
mountain-meditation route was circumvented. At the same time, the facilities at the
Tateyama hot-springs (close to the mountain’s caldera and the many mountain peaks in the
area) were restored and a direct route was established from the mountains to the hotsprings.
It was the start of a thriving hot-springs business. As a result of these
developments, priests of the town Ashikuraji in Tateyama’s foothills, who until then had
hosted pilgrims who climbed the mountain as religious practice, had to adjust to an increase
in secular tourists and pleasure hikers. The sudden decrease in pilgrims put Ashikuraji
priests into a very difficult practical and economic position. They had to rethink their
doctrinal teachings and customs, such as appealing to women who had been excluded from
the sacred mountain. Kaga domain’s strategies for stimulating the local economy during
the latter half of the Edo period threatened the older economy of Tateyama as a sacred site.
Etchū Tateyama Yūrei-mura Adauchi reveals that Ikku witnessed these socio-economic
changes and that he was aware of--and poked fun at--Tateyama’s traditional sacred
character. We also sense from this work that Ikku was prescient about the mountain’s future.
In this article I first transcribe and introduce Etchū Tateyama Yūrei-mura Adauchi .
Then I analyze its contents and contribute to a deeper understanding of this work as a
historical source important to research of Tateyama’s religious history. departmental bulletin pape

Etchu’s Tateyama and the Zenkoji Cult: An Analysis of Entry in Sangoku meisho zue
This paper reports on the recent discovery of an entry on the temple Shin-Zenkōji (in
Ōsumi’s Soo-gun Takarabe-gō) in the Edo-period compilation of Satsuma history and lore
entitled Sangoku meisho zue . According to the entry, Shin-Zenkōji, located in Takarabe-gō
Moto-mura (the present-day Kitamata Sakamoto-chiku, Takarabe-chō, Soo-shi,
Kagoshima), was established as a Shingon temple by a resident of Etchū’s Tateyama
named Niho Sakyō at the behest of Minamoto Yoritomo. For the new temple’s main icon,
Niho Sakyō had a bronze copy cast of the gilded-bronze Buddha worshipped at Shinano’s
Zenkōji. Some generations after Niho Sakyō’s time, however, both Shin-Zenkōji’s land and
that of the Niho family became public property, and the temple was abandoned. Because of
this, the entry claims, the temple’s sculpture of the Buddha Amida was transferred to the
Shingon temple Busshō-in in Takarabe-gō Sakuragi-mura.
As early as the 1980s, Kubo Naofumi briefly wrote about the Zenkōji cult in Etchū in the
Toyama kenshi (Tsūshi-hen II Chūsei). There was additional research by Kubo and
Ushiyama Yoshiyuki in the 1990s, and by Suzuki Keiji in the 2000s, but a dearth of
relevant historical materials has constrained more extensive studies of this theme. The
Shin-Zenkōji mention is, therefore, extremely important for understanding the medieval
Zenkōji cult in Etchū as well as the relationship between the Tateyama and Zenkōji cults.
This paper introduces the newly discovered entry. departmental bulletin pape

Developing Integrated English Skills for Presentation through the Implementation of Visual-aids
This is a study of the use of visual-aids in communicative English teaching and their
effects on English proficiency. The aim of this study is to develop a teaching method
that enables us to improve the communicative English skills of students gradually. As
a part of communicative English teaching, we used films which had socially and
culturally valuable content to increase both the quantity and quality of students’
English writing. The procedure is as follows: We select one film and give a brief
explanation of the background of the film before showing students a part of it. After
viewing the film partially, students are given a topic concerning the film and told to try
to write an English essay which is as long as possible. At the end of the semester, we
investigated whether and how their English skills improved, and how the students
viewed the use of visual-aids in English classes through questionnaires. It was shown
that essays written got longer and had more meaningful content when compared with
those written at the beginning of the semester. In addition, questionnaire results
showed that most students had a positive opinion of films as teaching materials. This
study shows the use of visual-aids in English classes has promise to improve students’
communicative English skills, especially for students whose skills are developing much
more slowly than advanced-level students.〔査読有り〕の原著論文

The Annotation of Nihon Eibutsushi’s Hana Bu(3)
The number of plant and animal poems which were produced in the Edo Period is
very large, with many of them possessing very rich and expressive prose. In 1776,
Nihon Eibutsushi was published. It was the first anthology of poems about plants and
animals in the history of Japanese poetry. In Nihon Eibutsushi , the Sakura poems are
in front of the plum poems. This annotation exhibits the 21th to the 40th Japanese
kanshi about flowers in Nihon Eibutsushi . By doing so it may be observed that at the
end of the Edo period, poems about flowers had begun to evolve from a Chinese style to
a unique Japanese style. departmental bulletin pape
A Study on Production Structure of Steel Industry in Liaoning, China
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the production structure of the steel industry in
Liaoning Province, China from 1978-2000 from a local level perspective, and to determine
the position of Ansteel(Anshan Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd). Chinese steel companies have
limited production activities in certain area due to the traditional steel industry location
policy and decentralized enterprise management system. Self-contained industrial systems
have been formed in each area.
In Liaoning Province, in 1985, a small number of large steel enterprises and many small
and medium-sized rolling enterprises coexisted. Large steel enterprises, such as Ansteel and
Benxisteel(Benxi Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd) accounted for more than 90% of pig iron and
crude steel production and more than half of steel production. The products of the two
enterprises are high-tech sheets that occupy more than 90% of the sheet production in
Liaoning Province. On the other hand, a large number of rolling enterprises did not produce
sheets, and mainly focused on low-technical steel bars.
Because of the traditional steel industry location policy and the lack of rolling capacity,
Ansteel needed to sell ingots, steel products and scrap to rolling enterprises. However, with
the improvement in the rolling capacity since 1990 , a self-contained production system has
been established in Ansteel. On the other hand, rolling enterprises must obtain raw
materials from Ansteel to produce.Because of the national industrial policy, it is more and
more difficult for rollings enterprises to survive .departmental bulletin pape
