    Peri-implant diseases: Treatment and management

    Get PDF
One of the substantial changes in dentistry is the development of implant science. Along with the development of applications, implant science practitioners will face an inevitable challenge, which is how to deal with such problems. Recently conducted researches are more concentrated on surgical and prosthetic techniques, while the treatment for peri-implant diseases is still incomplete. Therefore, the aim of this review research is to provide a broad and descriptive overview on peri-implant diseases and to suggest the related treatments. Scientific articles were collected by electronic searching through EMBASE and Medline, and since controlled clinical trials were limited in this field, no limitation was imposed on the evaluated articles. Moreover, review articles and meta-analysis were used. For implants that bone resorption has affected 2 mm, surgical methods are proved to be more effective and in the cases which has extended >50% of the implant length, it is better to remove the implant. By increasing the range of annual dental implant, peri-implant diseases have become a serious challenge in this field. The proposed treatment plan will be a manual for dentists regarding on how to deal with implant problems; although further researches are required to approve the proposed protocols

Gingival plasma cell granuloma: An enigmatic inflammatory pseudo-tumor with literature review

    Get PDF
Plasma cell granulomas (PCGs) also known as inflammatory pseudotumors are tumor like proliferations consisting chiefly of plasma cells, found most commonly in lungs. They can occur in areas such as orbit, head, neck and liver, but rarely they occur in the oral cavity. We here report an exceedingly rare case of gingival PCG in a 52-year-old woman who presented with unusual maxillary gingival overgrowth by excisional biopsy. Histopathological examination of the lesion showed a dense mass consisting of thin keratinized epithelium with proliferating rete ridges. The connective tissue showed hypercellularity. A dense inflammatory infiltrate consisting primarily of plasma cells and lymphocytes was seen in the connective tissue. Focal budding capillaries were seen in the stroma confirming the diagnosis of PC

Osteointegration is one of the most studied issues and is considered as one of the most evaluated cases in implantology. It is important for implantologists to have an in-depth understanding of what exist in the bone-implant interface. Get PDF
Purpose: Minimal intervention dentistry (MID) is a treatment philosophy that emphasizes protection of existing tooth structure. It has been incorporated in the dental curricula worldwide in the management of dental caries. There is limited evidence that whether the familiarity with MID principles imbibed through the curriculum is translated into clinical decision-making and practice. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, practice and behavior of dental interns toward MID. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the year 2014 for a period of 2 months among dental interns of all the dental colleges in Bengaluru city using a self-administered validated questionnaire. In addition to the demographic profile, 25 questions focused on knowledge, attitude, practice and behavior toward MID. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: A total of 417 questionnaires were found to be legible with an overall response rate of 90%. The mean scores for knowledge (3.40 ± 0.85), attitude (18.74 ± 2.8), practice (27.55 ± 6.8), and behaviour (1.11 ± 0.9) showed that these interns had adequate knowledge and a positive attitude toward MID. However, their behavior toward MID was negative, and they did not practice MID very often. The mean attitude score showed a significant correlation with knowledge and practice. Conclusion: Interns exhibited adequate knowledge and positive attitude which they acquired through their undergraduate curriculum, but it failed to create positive behavior toward practicing MID. Hence, it can be suggested that there is need to instill positive behavior among students so that they practice MID routinely

The facial musculature has important roles in performing a variety of orofacial functions such as speech, mastication, and swallowing. Exercises associated with the function of the muscles of the face and lips can be called orofacial myofunctional exercises. One of the important elements of myofunctional therapy includes facial and tongue exercises in order to promote proper tongue position, improved breathing, chewing and swallowing. Orofacial muscle exercises are a part of interceptive orthodontic treatment, which if employed in early ages can help to reduce the severity of dental malocclusion. Furthermore, the management of deleterious oral habits can be carried out via these exercises. In addition, there can be an improvement in the muscle tone and speech of the patient that leads to a harmonious orofacial functioning. This therapy doesn’t just address the oral cavity but all the facial muscles; the head and neck. It facilitates nasal breathing, proper functional posturing, and chewin

The general characteristics, etiologic characteristics, pathophysiology, diff erential diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic options of atypical facial pain and atypical odontalgia are described
