Moving, cataloguing and preserving Gramsci\u27s Prison Notebooks

    No full text
This essay reconstructs some of the events which, even though not directly concerning either the content or the chronology of the composition of Antonio Gramsci’s Notebooks, crucially marked their existence. The relevant events may be listed in four groups: 1) the January 1934 shipment of some of the notebooks Gramsci had had in the prison in Turi to the clinic in Formia where he was hospitalized and of some others to Rome, to the home address of his sister-in-law Tat’jana (Tatiana) Schucht; 2) the numbering and cataloguing of the Notebooks that Tat’jana Schucht did a few weeks after Gramsci’s death. Special attention will be paid to the results of the skilful analyses carried out by the Istituto centrale per il restauro e la conservazione del patrimonio archivistico e librario on some of the labels that Tat’jana pasted on the notebooks she catalogued; 3) their shipment to Moscow, between 1937 and 1938, and their preservation until they were returned to Rome after the end of the Second World War; 4) the differences in the ways Gramsci’s Notebooks were counted and the different total number that they were said to consist of. The proposed reconstruction will stress the importance of often underestimated data: the presence of a sketchbook among those normally referred to as notebooks; the fact that Tat’jana herself, while numbering thirty-one of Gramsci’s notebooks, did not number two large-format notebooks, which can be assumed to have remained separate from the others for quite some time; and the existence of two other large-format notebooks on which Tat’jana began to prepare, without completing them, a catalogue of the topics and a complete transcription of the notebooks written by Gramsci. It will moreover become clear that the hypotheses put forward by those who have supported the thesis that one or more of the notebooks were subtracted lack solid foundations and are unnecessary. This essay reconstructs some of the events which, even though not directly concerning either the content or the chronology of the composition of Antonio Gramsci’s Notebooks, crucially marked their existence. Digital Economy and Trade: Evidence from South Africa

    Get PDF
Advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have mitigated the physical distance as a trade barrier, making it easier to trade globally. Information and Communication Technology has become very important in today’s globalisation era. As a result, the primary aim of this study is to analyse the influence of digital economy on trade in South Africa from 1990 to 2022. The study used Autoregressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) approach to examine the impact of population of individuals using internet, literacy rate, economic globalisation and foreign direct investment on the trade share.  The results showed that population of individuals using internet have a positive and significance impact on trade share in the long run. Similarly, there was a positive and significance relationship between trade share and literacy rate, economic globalisation and foreign direct investment in the long run. Furthermore, the study reported that literacy rate, economic globalisation and foreign direct investment influence trade share positivity in the long run. The study recommend that policy makers should prioritise digital inclusion initiatives, which aims to increase the internet access in the rural areas and digital literacy to people who are not familiar with technology.  By doing so, this will lead to a higher number of internet users, ultimately fostering a positive and significant on trade

Macroeconomic Drivers of Capital Flows: A Review of International Literature

    Get PDF
The increasing investment gap in developing countries has renewed interest in understanding drivers of capital flows and how these countries can attract more investment. To contribute towards this understanding, this paper reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on macroeconomic drivers of capital flows. While other reviews have covered capital flows at an aggregate level, this paper focuses on the sub-inflows — foreign direct investment (FDI), portfolio equity, and portfolio debt — disentangling differences in their drivers in empirical work. The empirical literature reviewed in this paper reveals that risk, global liquidity, and commodity prices are push factors that matter most for FDI and portfolio equity and, in addition, economic growth in source countries matters for portfolio debt. Fewer pull factors appear to drive portfolio flows (both equity and debt) whereas more are relevant for FDI. Interest rate differentials, which feature prominently in the theoretical literature, have been found to be an important driver of overall capital flows but evidence at the sub-component levels has been weak. Drivers can also vary due to models used, countries and regions studied, and time periods covered in empirical work

Electricity Supply Subsidy and Economic Growth in Nigeria

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of electricity subsidies on economic growth in Nigeria from 1990 to 2022 from 1990 to 2022. The long-term relationship among the variables was analyzed using the ARDL (Auto-regressive Distributed Lag) model. A unit root test was performed on various factors, including the economic growth rate and electricity subsidy as a percentage of GDP, which were found to be of order one I(1), while oil prices, gross capital formation as a percentage of GDP, and foreign direct investment as a percentage of GDP were identified as order zero I(0). To establish long-term relationships among the variables, co-integration bound tests were executed. The findings indicate that electricity subsidies and gross capital formation exhibit a negative yet significant correlation with economic growth, whereas oil prices demonstrate a positive and significant relationship with economic growth. Additionally, the results affirm a long-term relationship between economic growth, electricity subsidies, and the other variables analyzed in the study. A serial correlation test was also conducted, revealing no serial correlation among the variables. In light of these findings, the study recommends that the Nigerian federal government should assess the appropriate utilization of funds allocated for electricity subsidies by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and Electricity Distribution Companies. Furthermore, it is essential for the federal government to ensure that the private power sector adequately meets the electricity demands of consumers nationwide to alleviate their hardships.
