Electrolysis with diamond anodes: Eventually, there are refractory species!

    Get PDF
In this work, synthetic wastewater polluted with ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmim) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf2) undergoes four electrolytic treatments with diamond anodes (bare electrolysis, electrolysis enhanced with peroxosulfate promoters, irradiated with UV light and with US) and results obtained were compared with those obtained with the application of Catalytic Wet Peroxide Oxidation (CWPO). Despite its complex heterocyclic structure, Bmim+ cation is successfully depleted with the five technologies tested, being transformed into intermediates that eventually can be mineralized. Photoelectrolysis attained the lowest concentration of intermediates, while CWPO is the technology less efficient in their degradation. However, the most surprising result is that concentration of NTf2- anion does not change during the five advanced oxidation processes tested, pointing out its strong refractory character, being the first species that exhibits this character in wastewater undergoing electrolysis with diamond. This means that the hydroxyl and sulfate radicals mediated oxidation and the direct electrolysis are inefficient for breaking the C-S, C-F and S-N bounds of the NTf2- anion, which is a very interesting mechanistic information to understand the complex processes undergone in electrolysis with diamond

A comparison of the gasification performance of olive pomace, coal, petcoke and their binary and ternary blends was carried out by means of TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS). The thermochemical behavior of the raw materials was a function of their composition and inorganic content. Olive pomace had a low ash content, a high volatile content and a low moisture. Moreover, olive pomace presented the highest reactivity. On the other hand, olive pomace presented the highest H2, CO, CO2, CH4 and NO emissions, while the highest SO2 release was obtained with petcoke, showing the output stream coming from the gasification of coal the highest H2/CO ratio. The presence of olive pomace in the blends improved their reactivity, increased the H2 release and the H2/CO ratio, and decreased the CO yield. A synergistic effect was observed in the gasification of the binary blend of olive pomace and petcoke. On the contrary, the gasification of the binary blend of olive pomace and coal presented an antagonistic effect. In ternary blends, either ssynergistic or antagonistic effects were observed, which depended on raw materials ratios in the feed. Finally, the lower the olive pomace ratio in the blends, the higher the porosity of the remaining residue was.

The influence of women in organizational transparency is an understudied vein of representative bureaucracy. Literature claims that the increase of women in formal political representation opened the opportunity to bring to public organizations gender diversity, experiences, and values different from those of men. It highlights the beneficial leadership styles and the legitimacy of public bureaucracies. Since gender equality in Spanish local government has increased in recentyears, it was the trigger and the aim for this study: to understand the influence of women’s political representation on the level of Spanish municipalities’ ransparency. The analysis draws on panel data econometric techniques. The results reinforce the discussion that the representation of women in local political life will increase information transparency and reduce information asymmetry in municipalities

Routes to chaos from axisymmetric vertical vortices in a rotating cylinder

    Get PDF
In this work, we study several routes of the transition to chaos from a steady axisymmetric vertical vortex in a rotating cylinder depending on thermal gradients and rotation rates. The analysis is done using nonlinear simulations. For a fixed rotation rate, the chaotic regime appears, as thermal gradients increase, after a sequence of supercritical Hopf bifurcations to periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic flows in a scenario similar to the Ruelle–Takens–Newhouse route to chaos. For moderate values of the rotation rate we find vortices that tilt and move away from the center of the cylinder in a periodic, quasiperiodic and finally chaotic movement around the central axis. For larger rotation rates the axisymmetric vortex splits into two symmetric vortices that move periodically around the central axis, and lose the symmetry merging again in one non-axisymmetric vortex that moves around the central axis quasiperiodically and later chaotically. The transitions to chaos when the rotation rate is varied at fixed thermal gradients reveal also the appearance of periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic states in different routes. Tilted single vortices, double vortices and more complex structures with multiple vortices are reported in this case. The transitions are studied through a force balance analysis. Results are of interest as they connect to the behavior of some atmospheric vertical vortices

The Clinical Information System (SIC) is an integrated information system designed to manage clinical and administrative patient information into hospital or health center. It is a basic component in healthcare processes because of its ability to make available all clinical information and its integration to be shared for every health professional. Moreover, it plays a leading role in the implementation and taking advantage of the Electronic Clinical History (HCE). The selection of a SIC for a health organization is not a trivial task, because it requires a thorough evaluation of its capacities and there is many alternatives available inside of the organizational environment in which it is used. The main objective of this work is the systematic evaluation of the different Clinical Information Systems taking into account the specific requirements of each organization. To achieve the specific objectives, on the one hand, this work describes a list of key characteristics of SICs that are classified and evaluated using functional and impartial criteria. On the other hand, the goals are used for the evaluation of a wide spectrum of test cases among the SICs currently implanted in Spain

Lasagna: Programming Abstractions for End–to–End Slicing in Software–Defined WLANs

    No full text
Current 802.11-based WLANs are asked to support an ever increasing number of services and applications, each of them characterized by a diverse set of requirements in terms of bitrate, latency, and reliability. Network virtualization and programmability are two emerging trends that can support the realization of such a vision in a cost-effective fashion. In this paper we introduce Lasagna, a novel end-to-end solution that enables flexible management of slices encompassing both the wired and the wireless segments of an Enterprise WLAN. Lasagna allows flexible management of network slices to meet their respective service requirements. An experimental evaluation carried out over a real-world testbed shows that Lasagna can ensure both functional and performance isolation between the different slices and efficient radio resource utilization. We release the entire implementation including the controller and the datapath under a permissive license for academic use

Joint Mobility Management and Multicast Rate Adaptation in Software-Defined Enterprise WLANs

    Get PDF
The ever-increasing demand for mobile content delivery and multimedia services is bringing renewed interest in multicast communications in Wi-Fi based WLANs. Nevertheless, multicast over Wi-Fi raises several challenges including low data rates and coexistence issues with other unicast streams. Some amendments to the Wi-Fi standard, such as 802.11aa, have introduced new delivery schemes for multicast traffic as well as finer control on the low-level aspects of the 802.11 medium access scheme. However, the logic for using such features is left to the implementer of the standard. In this paper, we present SDN@Play Mobile, a novel SDN-based solution for joint mobility management and multicast rate-adaptation in Wi-Fi networks. The solution builds upon a new abstraction, named Transmission Policy, which allows the SDN controller to reconfigure a multicast transmission policy when its optimal operating conditions are not met. An experimental evaluation carried out over a real-world testbed shows that our approach can deliver significant improvements in terms of both throughput and channel utilization compared to the legacy 802.11 multicast scheme. Finally, we release the entire software implementation under a permissive APACHE 2.0 license for academic use
