Strength and cardiometabolic risk in young adults: The mediator role of aerobic fitness and waist circumference
The aim of this study was to analyze the mediation role of cardiorespiratory fitness and waist circumference in the association between muscular strength and cardiometabolic risk. A cross-sectional study involved first-year college students (n = 370) from a Spanish public university was performed. We measured weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure, biochemical variables, maximum handgrip strength assessment, and cardiorespiratory fitness. We calculated handgrip dynamometry/weight and a previously validated cardiometabolic risk index. Analysis of covariance models was conducted to test differences in cardiometabolic risk values across muscular strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, and waist circumference categories, controlling for confounders. Hayes’ PROCESS macro was used for the multiple mediation analysis. The relationship between muscular strength and cardiometabolic risk did not remain significant (c′ = 1.76 [1.4]; P > .05) in a multiple serial bootstrapped mediation model including cardiorespiratory fitness and waist circumference as mediators when controlling for age and sex. According to the indirect effect, the significant paths in the model mediating this relationship between muscular strength and cardiometabolic risk index were as follows: muscular strength → waist circumference → cardiometabolic risk index (−4.899; 95% CI: −6.690; −3.450) and muscular strength → cardiorespiratory fitness → waist circumference → cardiometabolic risk index (−0.720; 95% CI: −1.316; −0.360). Both cardiorespiratory fitness and waist circumference mediate the association between muscular strength and cardiometabolic risk in young adults. Thus, our results place cardiorespiratory fitness and waist circumference as the main targets of physical activity programmes aimed at preventing cardiometabolic diseases
Health contributing factors in higher education students: the importance of family and friends
The aim of this study was to determine well-being and its relationship to social support from friends and family communication in university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1679 university students aged 18–25 years from four universities in Spain. Logistical regression models were tested (p < 0.05). The students in the last year of university reported higher well-being scores in comparison with students in the previous years. Well-being was inversely related to family communication problems. Family communication and social support from friends were the factors that associated the most with better well-being. All the regression models were statistically significant and explained from 16% of the well-being in Year 4 students until 34% of the well-being in Year 1 students. Our findings could be useful for developing interventions to promote health in order to improve college students’ well-being. It is important for strategies to be developed in mental and family health areas

Foraging habitat selection by gull–billed tern (Gelochelidon nilotica) in Central Spain (Castilla–La Mancha)
Foraging habitat selection by gull–billed tern (Gelochelidon nilotica) in Central Spain (Castilla–La Mancha). The
gull–billed tern breeds in temporary lakes in Castilla–La Mancha in Central Spain but depends on surrounding
land habitats to feed its chicks. It is therefore vital to know the type of environments it selects to capture prey
to feed nestlings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of habitats for hunting by adult gull–billed tern.
Of 66 lakes monitored between 1996 and 2016, we found the gull–billed tern used 12 for breeding. Each lake
was used during this period for 1–14 breeding seasons. We selected circular areas around the three wetlands
where the species bred in 2013 and 2014. Within these circles, we sampled a total of 60 random points and
recorded 125 gull–billed tern contacts (including between 1 and 39 birds). We estimated the same environmental
variables at contact and random points, including land use and the distance to the nearest wetland, the nearest
colony and to several types of anthropic uses (paved roads, houses, and cities). To evaluate habitat selection
we calculated the Manly selection index for soil use variables, and fitted linear mixed models to evaluate differences
in the distance variables. Land uses selected for foraging by the gull–billed tern were mainly cereal
crops, whereas vineyards were avoided. The birds foraged on average up to 2 km from the colonies and tended
to avoid proximity of towns and paved roads, suggesting that the species is sensitive to human disturbance.
Vineyards are the main land use in this region and the intensity is increasing. Our results suggest vineyards
should be limited in areas around these wetlands so that gull–billed terns may forage in their preferred sites
The role of the family in the development of digital competence. Analysis of four cases
Children's digital competence does not only depend on what is done at schools. Families are a guide for their children in the acquisition and development of that competence. The objective of this paper is to analyze the influence and role of families in the development of the digital competence of primary school students. In the study, a methodology of multiple case studies has been used. It allows a deep understanding of the phenomenon. Specifically, there are four cases located in two different areas of the Community of Madrid. This study take into account different socio-economic, cultural and educational characteristics of the family environment. Through interviews, it has been possible to identify the child's regular practices in the use and access of technologies (ICT) within the family environment, as well as to know how the family dynamics mediate in the learning and development of digital competence. The results point to an integration of ICT in households and a family dynamic towards ICT characterized by the establishment of norms and awareness, concerned about the problems associated with the use of the Internet. Parents do not question their contribution to the development of it, they see that their children handle ICT with ease and confidence and think that digital learning is something innate in their children
Software is key to many of the activities we perform in our every day life. Many organizations are increasingly becoming dependent on software as an integral part of their product or services. These have been evolving continuedly, due to the major changes introduced by new technologies over the past decades.
Due to the raising presence of software at any level or scope, it feels necessary to increase its quality and improve its efficiency in development activities. Software engineering addresses these needs by means of the identification of software development life cycle’s processes and best practices in order to succeed in Project development. As a result of this fact, software development organizations require assessment and knowledge about those project’s objectives and best practices levels of fulfilllment so that they can keep improving.
At this point, new series of standards like ISO/IEC 15504, emerge. This series would be later replaced by ISO/IEC 33000. These series aim to perform software processes assessments based on its capability and organizational maturity. Afterwards, an organizational improvement controlled process should be established in software development activities. This sould be, in fact, a way of rasing the organizational quality in line with software systems modernization.
It is, for this purpose, desirable to have a Software Process Framework to aid in the management of software process improvement instituting. This Master’s dissertation aims to provide support in software process improvements from previous process assessments and eventually, that may result in a maturity certification of the software development organization
A Randomized Clinical Trial
Introduction: Choosing the type of treatment approach is as important as the treatment
itself, also giving and important value to internal variables in the individual that can
determine the evolution of the intervention. The main aim of this study is to determine
whether individual and/or group occupational therapy leads to changes in generalized
self-efficacy and psychological well-being, and to identify the type of therapy that has
the best effects on older adults.
Method: Prospective, randomized, comparing two treatment groups: individual and
group therapy during 6 months. A total sample of 70 patients institutionalized in
residential care homes for older adults with a mean age of 85 (SD = 4). Assessment
was conducted using the General Self-Efficacy Scale and Ryff’s Well-being Scale. For
analyze the main dependent variables we used ANOVA for intra-subject and intersubject
factors and Pearson correlation between well-being and self-efficacy by type
of treatment.
Results: Groups were equivalent at baseline. The results show statistically significant
differences between the two types of therapy, showing a positive correlation between
well-being and self-efficacy, being greater at a group level than at and individual level. At
the group level, practically all of variables measured in the participants were increased
as shown in the results tables, including a better adaptation and predisposition to work
four participants died while the study was being conducted.
Conclusion: The clinical trial shows that older people in residential centers achieve
an increase in emotional well-being and self-efficacy when they receive occupational
therapy group, rather than individual treatment not being significant changes. Treatment
group participants reported a positive experience and clinical benefits from training
