    No full text
Herein, we report a synthesis of nanostructured multifunctional material: flakes of reduced graphene oxide decorated with NiTiO3 particles (NiTiO3/rGO). The structural and morphological features of the NiTiO3/rGO composite were investigated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis, Raman, infrared and UV–Vis spectroscopy techniques. The electrochemical performance was scrutinized through cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements (GCD). The NiTiO3/rGO composite demonstrates an outstanding specific capacitance of 551 F g-1 (at 10 mV s-1) and an excellent capacitance retention (121 %). Its specific surface area (53 m2 g-1) increased by 100 % with respect to the pristine NiTiO3. The junction of NiTiO3 with rGO endowed the titanate with the mesoporous structure. NiTiO3/rGO presents supercapacitor behavior and has an attractive power characteristic with power density of 9718 W kg-1 (at 20 A g-1). The charge transfer resistance for NiTiO3/rGO, 56 O, is 2-fold smaller than for the bare NiTiO3. The composite behaved as electrocatalyst; it enhanced sensitivity of dopamine electrochemical detection. Biosensor showed linearity in the range 1–60 µM and limit of detection of 2.84 µM. NiTiO3/rGO also acted as visible-light harvesting photocatalyst and facilitated degradation of pharmaceutical pollutant, i.e. nizatidine. Photodegradation efficiency reached 35 % and 85 % with NiTiO3 and NiTiO3/rGO, respectivel

FUME: An air quality decision support system for cities based on CEP technology and fuzzy logic

    Get PDF
Air pollution has become one of the most important problems in urban areas, and governments are applying regulations in an attempt to fulfill the recommendations of Air Quality (AQ) standards to reduce the pollution. In this paper, we present FUME, a decision support system to process heterogeneous and real-time data to propose daily recommendations following an action protocol based on AQ standards. This approach considers past, current and future environmental situations (AQ and atmospheric stability). FUME is implemented by combining Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Complex Event Processing (CEP) technology. In particular, we propose a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) to improve the decision-making process by recommending the actions for four different sources of pollution: traffic, industry, domestic and agriculture. The FUME approach is applied to a specific case study: the city of Puertollano (Ciudad Real, Spain), where the pollution levels of PM10 are, on numerous occasions, above the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations

Pro-environmental behaviour in China: analysing the impact of attitudinal and contextual factors / Comportamiento proambiental en China: analizando el impacto de los factores actitudinales y contextuales

This research analyses pro-environmental behaviour (considering four categories: transport and mobility, waste management, ecological consumption and activism) according to environmental attitudes and certain contextual factors regarding the neighbourhood of residence. In addition, based on the assumptions of ABC theory, we evaluate the moderating effects of context on the relationship between attitudes and pro-environmental behaviours. The study sample consists of 218 people living in China who completed a questionnaire distributed to an online panel. The data obtained are analysed by means of iterative regressions, t tests for independent samples and regressions using the PROCESS macro for moderating effects. The results show that the four categories of pro-environmental behaviours are explained by different attitudinal dimensions. It is also noted that contextual factors directly impact the four behavioural categories considered and further moderate the relationship between the attitudinal dimensions and two types of behaviours (waste management and ecological consumption). Implications for the design of strategies to promote pro-environmental behaviour among the Chinese population are discussed

Is the Subsurface Drip the Most Sustainable Irrigation System for Almond Orchards in Water-Scarce Areas?

    Get PDF
The expansion of irrigated almond orchards in arid and semi-arid areas with scarce water available raises key issues related to the sustainability of the water resources. A 3-year field experiment was conducted on a commercial young almond orchard located in the southeast of Spain to study the effect of two drip irrigation systems (surface, DI and subsurface, SDI) on almond crop growth and their physiological responses under fully-irrigated conditions. Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and its components (crop transpiration, Tc and soil evaporation, Es) were monitored as well as the irrigation water and nitrogen productivities. To estimate ETc, a simplified two-source energy balance (STSEB) approach was used. Although a lower irrigation water amount was applied in SDI compared to DI (differences between 10% and 13.8%), the almond crop growth and physiological responses as well as the yield components and kernel yield showed no significant differences. The ETc estimates resulted in small differences for spring and fall periods (0.1–0.2 mm day-1) for both treatments, while differences were significant during higher ETo periods (May–August), being 1.0–1.3 mm day-1 higher for the DI treatment than for the SDI treatment. The irrigation water productivity (IWP) was significantly higher in the SDI treatment than in the DI treatment. However, no significant differences between the two treatments were observed for nitrogen productivity. It can be concluded that the SDI system is a suitable strategy for irrigating almond crops, reducing consumptive water use and increasing IW

Road marking degradation analysis using 3D point cloud data acquired with a low-cost Mobile Mapping System

    Get PDF
Road maintenance is an important task that ensures the availability and correct function of the road infrastructure. This work presents a methodology that, first, offers an empirical radiometric analysis of the Velodyne VLP-32C laser scanner. Second, it defines a road marking degradation model that estimates the coefficient of retroreflected luminance (night visibility, RL) using the intensity attribute of 3D point clouds acquired with this low-cost system. This model is validated and applied to a case study road section of about 6 km in length, where a continuous degradation map is defined together with data to assist decision-making for preventive and corrective maintenance. This validation shows that the proposed method is capable of offering good qualitative visualizations of the degradation status of the road markings, as well as detecting those areas with high degradation (RL< 100 mcd/m2/lx) that require corrective maintenance
