When Washington Burned: The British Invasion of the Capital and a Nation\u27s Rise from the Ashes
Perhaps no other single day in U.S. history was as threatening to the survival of the nation as August 24, 1814, when British forces captured Washington, D.C. This unique moment significantly altered the nation’s path forward, but the event and the reasons behind it are little remembered by most Americans.
Distinguished professor of American history at Lynn University Robert P. Watson examines the British campaign and American missteps that led to the fall of Washington during the War of 1812. He analyzes the actions of key figures on both sides, such as President James Madison and General William Winder and Britain’s Rear Admiral George Cockburn and Major General Robert Ross.
Watson pinpoints the reasons the campaign was such a disaster for the United States and covers the stories of the courageous young clerks and the bold first lady, Dolley Madison, who risked their lives to save priceless artifacts and documents, including the Constitution, from the flames. The British invasion was repulsed over the following weeks and months, and the United States ultimately emerged stronger.

Systematic Abuse in Women’s Soccer: A Comprehensive Analysis and Call for Reform
This poster presentation examines the systemic abuse in women’s soccer, a crisis that persists despite growing awareness. Through an analysis of the Sally Q. Yates Report (2022) and multiple case studies, we assess patterns of misconduct, failures of governing bodies, and the institutional responses that have enabled abuse. Notable cases include Jennifer Hermoso’s non-consensual kiss by Luis Rubiales (AP News, 2024) and sexual misconduct allegations against Bruce Mwape (McElroy, 2024). The careers of Rory Dames and Paul Riley exemplify how abusive coaches were repeatedly protected despite years of documented complaints (U.S. Soccer Federation, 2022). Additionally, the abusive coaching tactics of Jonathan Morgan and the tragic suicide of Maddy Cusack highlight the severe emotional and physical toll on players (Bosher, 2023; Kuper, 2024). Our research exposes the negligence of governing bodies, revealing a pattern of inadequate protections and systemic failures.
To address these issues, we propose the creation of an independent non-profit organization focused on research, mentorship, data analysis, and media advocacy. This initiative will conduct in-depth studies on abuse patterns and policy failures, provide emotional support and professional guidance for players, develop a centralized database to track cases of abuse and inform policy reforms, and leverage media advocacy to amplify awareness and hold governing bodies accountable. By combining research, advocacy, and institutional accountability, this initiative seeks to create a safer, more equitable environment for women’s soccer
