Hidden Risks: Quantifying Sources of Phthalate Exposure From Cleansers

To what extent does using skincare products contribute to human exposure to phthalates? Phthalates are commonly used in personal care products as fragrance stabilizers but have been linked to endocrine disruption and other health concerns. These compounds can also leach from the plastic containers into the products inside. With increased consumer awareness, it is vital to investigate the presence of phthalates in everyday consumer products, such as cleansers, which are used in daily hygiene routines. This study determines whether phthalates are present in multiple brands of cleanser products and compares their levels across different formulations. Liquid-liquid extraction followed by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet spectroscopy detection is employed to isolate phthalate compounds for accurate quantification. The expectation is to identify varying levels of phthalates in different cleanser brands, with some formulations containing higher concentrations than others, depending on their ingredient composition. The findings will help assess potential consumer exposure and identify products that contain harmful chemicals. If phthalates are detected, the results will emphasize increased transparency in ingredient labeling and encourage consumers to use resources such as the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database to make informed purchasing decisions. This study contributes to the broader discussion on product safety and may support efforts to advocate for stricter regulations on phthalate use in cosmetics and personal care products

The Repercussions of Recent Airline Accidents & Incidents on the Boeing Company

The Boeing Company, United States-based and the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer, serves commercial jetliners, as well as defense, space, and security systems companies. However, in recent years, the company has faced scrutiny regarding its safety culture, stemming from numerous crashes involving their Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. This research will analyze crashes like the fatal Lion Air Flight 610, which crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 189 passengers and crew on October 29, 2018, and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which crashed near Ejere, Ethiopia, killing all 157 on board on March 10, 2019. The legal actions of aviation governing agencies, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), taken against The Boeing Company following these accidents and others, like the grounding of aircraft and capping of aircraft production will also be examined in this research. Studies show that following these legal actions, The Boeing Company has lost over $25 billion in revenue since 2019, and the company’s main competitor, Airbus had more commercial aircraft deliveries in 2024, surpassing Boeing by approximately one hundred and forty-seven aircraft. Hence, the impact of the legal actions taken by the governing agencies on Boeing’s deliveries, revenue, consumer trust and union trust like that of the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA), and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) will be discussed. Overall, the research highlights the critical need for effective oversight and the lessons learned from Boeing’s shortcomings to inform future regulatory practices

Big Five Personality Traits and Emotional Eating in Young Adults

Emotional eating (EE) refers to consuming food in response to emotionally provoking triggers rather than physical hunger (Tinmazoglu & Guvender-Doksat, 2020). Often acting as a learned coping mechanism, EE is associated with emotions like anxiety, depression, anger, or stress. This behavior can lead to overeating or undereating depending on the individual\u27s emotional response and coping style, posing risks for obesity, eating disorders, and nutritional imbalances (Tinmazoglu & Guvender-Doksat, 2020). Psychological factors affect susceptibility to EE, with research indicating that personality traits interact with biological, environmental, and social influences to heighten vulnerability to disordered eating behaviors (Brown et al., 2020). This study examines the association between personality traits and EE among 183 participants (108 female, 71 male, 4 non-binary; M= 20.022 years; SD= 2.12) from a small liberal arts college. Participants reported personality traits via the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) and EE behaviors using the Adult Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (AEBQ). Correlational analysis revealed significant negative relationships between conscientiousness (r= -.223, p= .002), agreeableness (r= -.172, p = .020), emotional stability ( r= -.163, p= .027), and emotional overeating. Findings align with prior research suggesting that conscientiousness, agreeableness, and emotional stability contribute to structured eating patterns in emotional contexts (Brown et al., 2020; Gacek et al., 2023). These results highlight the role of personality in EE, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address disordered eating. Early identification of personality-linked vulnerabilities could inform strategies to mitigate risks associated with EE and eating disorders
