    Nonlinear Pushover Analysis for Steel Beam-Column Connection

    This paper presents results of analytical evaluation conducted on beam-column connection using nonlinear static pushover analysis (NSPA) process. The aim of using this technique is to investigate the efficiency of the configuration used in conventional steel beam-column connections. In this research work the beam was subjected to two different applied loads; which are concentrated load and uniform distributed load. Two case scenarios have been studied to check the stability of connections while distributed load increased by a factor of 2. The beam is connected to the column by a fully penetration weld. Numerous correlations have been investigated such as base shear vs. displacement, displacement vs. time, and base shear vs. time. The numerical result indicated that joint capacity for both cases show the same behavior in the elastic range. However its behavior changes in the plastic range. The results showed that with increasing (doubled) the applied load on the beam-column connection the base shear and peak displacement do not change. Moreover, for studying the yield point of welded beam-column connection, the model analysis “finite element modeling (FEM) software” was conducted

    An Assessment of Zimbabwe Secondary School Teachers’ Attitudes towards the Use of Smart Phones in the Classroom: A Case of Midlands Province, Zimbabwe

    While technology has been embraced by most of the people, use of smart phones in the classroom has been received with mixed feelings. Some say it enhances learning while others complain that it disturbs instruction. This research wanted to find out the stance of secondary school teachers on this issue in Zimbabwe. A sample of 50 randomly selected teachers from 10 randomly selected secondary schools in Gweru District, Midlands Province in Zimbabwe was used. Data from self-constructed questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS mainly on descriptive statistics and correlation. Findings showed that teachers possess smart phones which they use for researching and other instructional purposes with moderate expertise. Teachers consider smart phones as hand-held computers that can enhance learning for they have high engagement potential and they extend classroom walls allowing students to engage with the global village. A correlation computation showed that there is a significant relationship between perceived problems of smart phones and smart phones integration factors. However, respondents felt that smart phones can cause lower levels of attention during lessons and allows cheating and copying during exams. They also concurred that teachers’ technical skills lag behind those of digital native students. Thus, they foresaw instructional problems on the part of the teachers on the use of smart phones in the classroom and were against their use. They doubted if the use of smart phones can improve the pass rate and whether they wanted their students to bring cell phones and use them during lessons for they perceived problems in controlling students using them. They also doubted if schools in Zimbabwe would ever benefit if students are allowed to use their phones in class. The study concluded that teachers in Zimbabwe are not yet prepared to have students use smart phone in the classroom and recommended for further research on the potential benefits of using smart phones in the classroom

    Comparative Crystal Field Studies of Some Ligand of Cr3+ Complexes

    Chromium (III) complexes of nominate ligands are well recognized for their biological significance along with their anti-carcinogenic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. In this investigation a range of Cr+3 complexes with diverse ligands were examined; and categorized with ultra- violet-visible, UV-Vis, spectrometer. Crystal field theory is an electrostatic method, utilized to characterize the fragmentation in d-orbital metal energies. It offers an expected explanation of the electronic energy levels that control the UV-Vis spectra. Accordingly, complexes’ crystal field splitting parameters (Δo) are measured through the transition-band using the maximum wavelength. Similarly an additional method, comprising Tanabe-Sugano (TS) diagrams, has been utilized to compute crystal field splitting parameters for assessment. Thus, good agreement was found between both techniques. The configuration of the ligands in increasing order is found to be (H2O) Cl < urea < H2O < OX < NCS < OX H2O < acac < en Cl < NH3 NCS < en which coordinate mostly with the spectro-chemical series. Therefore (H2O) Cl is the weakest ligand, while ethylenediamine (en) is the strongest one among the investigated ligands of Cr3+ complexes. Clearly strong ligands such as; ethylenediamine is considerably influences the coordination geometry of the metal complexes which effect on the deposit morphology and other physical and chemical properties

    The Alignment of Teaching Methodology and Learning Outcomes: The Effect of Students’ Presentations on the Development of English Language Proficiency of Adult Learners

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using students’ presentations on improving English language skills of adult learners and assess its potency to reach the expected learning outcomes. The research was conducted in the Continuing Education Center, Ishik University, Erbil, KRG, Iraq. The target population consisted of 23 English language learners (university graduates, and currently working in the sphere of Education). This study consisted of three major phases: first, explanation, preparation, presentation of the students’ works on the topic of interest and observation of students’ performance, second, teacher-student and student-student discussion of the video-recorded presentations. The last step was the application of the survey, which was designed to measure the participants’ attitude toward the mini-projects they presented in the class. The data were analyzed by means of frequency and percentage, as well as a summarization of the discussions. The main findings show that students’ attitude toward oral presentations, prepared on the topic of their own interest, have a positive attitude on students’ motivation toward learning English and help the adult learners to improve their language in general, and the productive skills in particular

    On Involving Infrastructure Topics in the Civil Engineering Department Curriculum-Survey of Graduate Students Views

    In this work, a survey on the Ishik-University graduate students’ level of awareness of the importance of infrastructures on the community, on their views on the curriculum versus infrastructures’ topics, and the most important topics found better for their future work. Our goal is to prepare our students to be future engineers educated with the concepts of infrastructures and how to improve and maintain these facilities. Students have been given a chance to evaluate current curriculum with particular focus on the infrastructure topics. Students have shown their high level of awareness, and gave their opinion on the curriculum and infrastructure as shown in tables and graphs. Conclusions and recommendations for the civil engineering department in Ishik University are drawn. It is the aim of the authors to further improve the curriculum of the civil engineering department of Ishik University, particularly aiming at providing our graduates a better understanding of infrastructures

    Raising Environmental Awareness among Young Generation Using Social Media: A Case “Green It at Ishik University”

    The paper examines the role of social media in creating environmental awareness, responsibilities or issues of among young generation (especially Higher education students). The authors attempted to determine whether there are present and how can be developed environmental awareness or issues behavior on social networking sites like Facebook. The campaign was designed based on a practical model and implemented in a case study of 3rd grade of computer engineering department in Ishik University. The Social media platform (Facebook) formed the technological foundation of the campaign. Throughout the campaign prepared information about environmental awareness or responsibilities documentation was distributed by means of these Facebook to selected students in the case study. Issues related to environmental management as well as suggested strategies to deal with them was also communicated to the target students. In order to determine the growth of awareness related to environmental issues and to get feedback on the campaign benefits and problems, two surveys were applied before and after implementation process. Massages (campaign prepared information) were posted at regular periods (one mouth) throughout the Facebook. The findings revealed that Social Media was found to be ineffective method of raising the environmental awareness among the higher education students in Kurdistan

    Knowledge Management and Organizational Performance: A Study of Private Universities in Kurdistan

    In today’s modern global education, universities are required to enhance their employees’ performance in order to survive. Knowledge management is one of the essential key sources for innovation and transformation in education sectors. This study is aimed to examine the relationship between the knowledge management processes and private universities’ performance in Kurdistan. The researchers used a quantitative research method to test the developed research hypotheses. The researchers distributed 120 surveys at private universities in Kurdistan; however only 113 surveys were filled and received back from the participants, therefore the sample size for the current study is 113 participants. This study is able to reveal that knowledge management is a key driver of education sectors’ performance and a significant instrument for profitability, competitiveness and survival. Thus producing, using, sharing and managing knowledge efficiently is fundamental for education sectors to take full advantage of the value of knowledge. The findings of this study revealed that there is positive relationship between knowledge transfer and organizational performance in private universities, comparing with other knowledge management process

    Further Histological and Ultrastructural Observations on the Cestode, Senga Mastacembeli Sp. N. with the Revesion of Genus Specieses

    A total of 122 Mastacembelus mastacembelus were collected from Greater Zab river near Erbil city, Kurdistan region, north of Iraq, during the period from January to the end of December 2011. In the laboratory, the fish was identified and then the fishes were opened from the abdominal site and the gastrointestinal tract was removed out and examined carefully for cestodes. Live cestodes were recovered from the intestine of the infected fish and examined by compound light microscope and scanning microscope, also histological sections were prepared for some samples. The study showed a number of differential characters of Senga mastacembli sp. n. which not revealed during the first description by Rahemo (1996) also during the ultra-structural study of it by Rahemo and Mohammad. (1998). The study improved that the species S. Mastacembli is a valid species name, also the type host of it M. Simach is regarded as a synoname to M. mastacembli and the last is regarded as a type host for this cestode
