Master's Thesis
Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, represent a group of lifelong relapsing-remitting gastrointestinal conditions that significantly impair patients' quality of life and demand complex, long-term treatment regimens. Despite the availability of advanced pharmacological therapies, non-adherence to treatment remains a persistent challenge, contributing to disease flares, hospitalizations, and increased healthcare costs. Among various contributing factors, lack of patient education and insufficient communication between healthcare providers and patients stand out as key barriers to sustained medication adherence. This master’s thesis explores the role of nursing-led educational interventions in improving medication adherence among patients with IBD and evaluates the effectiveness of structured nursing education in fostering treatment commitment and self-management.
The primary aim of this study is to assess whether educational support delivered by nurses can improve treatment adherence among individuals living with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. The research is guided by several core objectives: (1) to determine baseline awareness and adherence levels in patients with IBD, (2) to identify gaps in patient knowledge and reasons for non-compliance, (3) to develop and implement a structured educational intervention by nursing staff, (4) to measure the impact of this intervention on adherence and patient-reported outcomes, and (5) to propose recommendations for integrating educational programs into routine nursing care.
A quantitative-qualitative mixed-methods design was employed. The study included 60 patients diagnosed with IBD (30 with Crohn’s disease and 30 with ulcerative colitis), recruited from a regional outpatient gastroenterology clinic. Participants were assessed at baseline using validated questionnaires: the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), the IBD Knowledge Questionnaire, and a quality-of-life index (IBDQ-9). Following initial assessment, participants received a standardized nursing-led educational program, including one-on-one counseling, printed materials, and follow-up sessions over 3 months. Post-intervention assessments were conducted using the same tools to evaluate changes in adherence, knowledge, and overall satisfaction.
The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in medication adherence post-intervention (p < 0.01), with mean MMAS-8 scores rising from 5.1 to 7.3. Patient knowledge scores increased by 42%, while quality-of-life indicators improved by 26%. Furthermore, qualitative feedback highlighted increased confidence in self-management, stronger nurse-patient relationships, and greater understanding of long-term treatment goals. A subgroup analysis suggested that individualized educational support was more effective in younger patients and those with recent diagnoses.
This study confirms that structured educational interventions delivered by trained nursing professionals can substantially enhance medication adherence and empower patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. The findings emphasize the necessity of integrating tailored educational strategies into nursing practice, especially in ambulatory settings where long-term care is coordinated. It also reinforces the critical role of nurses not only as caregivers, but as educators and advocates who bridge the knowledge gap and support patient-centered care.
In conclusion, this research contributes to the evidence base advocating for expanded roles of nursing staff in managing chronic illnesses. Future studies should explore long-term sustainability of such interventions, scalability across different healthcare systems, and integration of digital educational tools to enhance reach and accessibility. Abbreviations used throughout the thesis include IBD – Inflammatory Bowel Disease; MMAS – Morisky Medication Adherence Scale; IBDQ – Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire; UC – Ulcerative Colitis; CD – Crohn's Disease
Master's Thesis
The research highlights a significant prevalence of cognitive impairment and associated modifiable risk factors, including chronic diseases, psycho-emotional disorders, social isolation, and low cognitive and physical activity, among elderly individuals receiving home nursing care. In response, nursing care plays a crucial, multifaceted role, encompassing early screening for cognitive decline and depression, followed by the systematic implementation of various interventions. These include structured cognitive exercises targeting attention, memory, and executive functions, as well as indirect support through breathing techniques to manage stress and anxiety, and comprehensive assistance from home health aides. The integrated approach of home care agencies, leveraging multidisciplinary teams and a structured nursing process, proves vital in mitigating cognitive decline, improving patients' quality of life, and fostering greater functional independence within their home environment.
The goal of the research is to develop and implement a system of nursing interventions aimed at supporting cognitive health in older people in order to improve their quality of life.
The research methodology includes literature analysis, quantitative research (surveys and cognitive state assessment) using validated instruments (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17) ), practical implementation of a pilot program.
The obtained results can be used for further development of geriatric care training programs for nursing students. The proposed typology of cognitive interventions can be used as a theoretical basis for future research in the field of nursing. Implementation of regular cognitive screening for patients aged 65+ in healthcare facilities. Integration of nursing programs for cognitive health support into the daily practice of long-term care institutions (nursing homes, assisted living facilities). Conducting training for nurses on recognizing early signs of cognitive decline and implementing preventive interventions. Creation of interdisciplinary teams, including nurses, social workers, psychologists, and doctors, to develop individualized plans for supporting cognitive functionin
Master's Thesis
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a transformative force in healthcare, particularly within the domain of nursing. As evidence-based practice continues to evolve, AI technologies present new avenues for optimizing patient care, improving clinical decision-making, enhancing workflow efficiency, and supporting professional development among nurses. However, the integration of AI into nursing practice also introduces a host of ethical, practical, and systemic challenges. This systematic review aims to evaluate the role of AI in transforming evidence-based nursing practice by synthesizing recent literature on AI applications, impacts on nursing outcomes, and ethical considerations.
The aim of the study is to explore how AI technologies influence evidence-based nursing practices and to identify key benefits, limitations, and ethical challenges associated with their integration.
Study objectives.
1. To investigate how AI supports clinical decision-making, predictive analytics, and workflow optimization in nursing practice.
2. To evaluate the effects of AI integration on nurse satisfaction, education, training, and patient outcomes.
3. To identify the ethical challenges associated with AI implementation in nursing, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, informed consent, and accountability.
4. To provide evidence-based recommendations for the ethical and effective integration of AI into nursing practice.
The object of research. The object of the study includes peer-reviewed journal articles and systematic reviews published between 2013 and 2025 that address AI technologies used in nursing practice and education.
The subject of research. The subject of the study is the role of artificial intelligence in transforming nursing practice, decision-making, and the ethical dimensions of care delivery in modern healthcare settings.
The methods of study included a systematic review of literature using PRISMA guidelines. Database searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis focused on AI applications in nursing, measurable outcomes, and ethical considerations. Studies were selected based on relevance, methodological rigor, and alignment with the research objectives.
The scientific and practical value of the study. This review synthesizes the current evidence on AI’s transformative potential in nursing practice and highlights both the opportunities and risks associated with its adoption. It serves as a resource for nurse leaders, policymakers, and educators by offering actionable insights into how AI can be ethically and effectively implemented to enhance care delivery, patient safety, and nursing education.
The findings of this systematic review indicate that AI contributes significantly to improving diagnostic accuracy, predicting patient deterioration, and streamlining administrative tasks. AI-based decision support systems and predictive tools enhance nurses’ ability to make timely and evidence-based clinical decisions. Educational technologies powered by AI facilitate nurse training, continuing education, and simulation-based skill development. Moreover, AI supports workflow optimization by automating repetitive tasks, thereby increasing nurse efficiency and reducing burnout.
However, ethical concerns remain a central challenge. Issues of data privacy, algorithmic bias, transparency, and nurse autonomy must be addressed through rigorous ethical frameworks and institutional safeguards. The review underscores the need for nurses to participate in the design, deployment, and evaluation of AI tools to ensure these technologies align with core nursing values and patient-centered care principles
