Aircraft design studies - counter insurgency aircraft with suction boundary layer control
A design study of a counter insurgency aircraft with a suction boundary layer
controlled wing to give high lift has been undertaken. The work was carried out by
the students in the Department of Aircraft Design during the 1966 academic year and
was intended to provide evidence on the feasibility of the configuration employed.
The aircraft has a gross weight of 9800 lb. and is designed to carry a variety of
payloads of up to 2000 lb. at a maximum speed of 380 m. p. h. The flight usable
lift coefficient of five is achieved at an incidence of approximately 30
o
which introduced particular layout and undercarriage problems. A twin boom configuration with
a variable geometry undercarriage was adopted.
It is concluded that the use of a suction boundary layer control system can confer
significant performance benefits but the aircraft might well be handicapped by climatic
operational limitations. The variable geometry undercarriage is complex and an
alternative layout using a tilt wing might be preferable
Aeroplane design study STOL airliner (A71). Part 1- configuration description and data
The interest in STOL airliners was reflected in the
choice of a 100-118 passenger short range aircraft of this
type as the 1971 design project. In addition to the use of
the study for detailed investigation by the students of
Aircraft Design it also served as the basis for an
investigation of the low speed lift and control problems
of STOL aircraft.
This report is concerned with a description of the
configuration adopted and specification of geometric and
aerodynamic data. As such it is the first part of the
complete reporting of the investigation, subsequent parts
being concerned with the more detailed work.
The aircraft was designed to operate from 2000 ft long
single runways and have a cruising speed of up to 11 - 0.83
at 30,000 ft altitude. The estimated gross weight is
115,000 lb and when landing at 100,000 lb weight the approach
speed is 79 knots. The high lift coefficients necessitated
by this are obtained either by externally blown jet flaps or
an augmenter wing arrangement
Aeroplane design studies: bpropeller turbine and pure jet powered general purpose transport aircraft (academic years 1963 and 1965)
The recent interest in the air bus conception of air travel is reflected
in the aircraft chosen for study by the students in the Department of Aircraft
Design during the 1963 and 1965 academic years.
The first study was based upon the use of four propeller turbine engines
to power an aircraft capable of carrying up to 40,000 lb. of payload over
short stage lengths. Emphasis was placed on the need for operations with
mixed passenger and freight loads and the fuselage layout incorporates two
decks, the lower one of which is designed as a freighthold with nose loading
doors.
The second study was similar except that four wing mounted pure jet
engines replaced the propeller turbines of the earlier design. The cruising
speed is thus some 50 per cent higher with a Mach number limitation of 0.8.
The two deck fuselage layout is retained, but with a rear loading door for the
freighthold, and the wing has 28° of leading edge sweepback .
An initial economic comparison of the two aircraft revealed that when
the aircraft are operated over 250 n. mile stage lengths the direct operating
costs of the propeller turbine powered design are some 20 per cent less than
those of the pure jet version. This is mainly due to the much lower first
cost of the simpler aircraft
A review of data analysis systems
This review gives an appraisal of 8 Automatic Time history reocrd
analysis systems.
The appraisal indicates the analytical capabilities, analysis flexibility
and the cost involved in performing the analysis.
It is suggested that in choosing such a system for an educational
institution, some analysis speed and automation should be sacrificed for
computational flexibility and operational adaptability.
The review does not indicate that a specific machine be considered, but
rather that an analysis system be built from a number of manufacturing sources
The digital simulation of a turbo-charged diesel engine
A mathematical simulation of a six cylinder four stroke water cooled diesel
engine is described and then used to study the changes in performance caused by
variations of engine paramters and operating conditions. The results are discussed
with reference to the mathematical model employed and the physical system.

A review of pressure fluctuations in turbulent boundary layers at subsonic and supersonic speeds
The equation for the pressure fluctuations in a turbulent boundary
layer are derived with special reference to their values at a rigid wall.
It is shown that in incompressible flow the pressure field is defined
completely once the velocity field is known. The results obtained from
the theory are compared with experiment. The work is extended to include
the effects of compressibility and it is found that a treatment similar to
that given by Phillips is appropriate. It is shown that under conditions

Final report of grit blasting and metal spraying trials carried out at H. M. Dockyard, Devonport
Mild steel surfaces that are to be protected by aluminium or
zinc spray coatings are generally prepared by blasting with chilled
iron angular grit. Previous work1had shown that a relationship
exists between the grit blasting conditions (at least in terms of
blasting angle and grit condition), the reflectivity of the blasted
surface and the bond strength of a spray coating of aluminium on the
blasted surface. An instrument has been developed that assesses the
suitability of a blasted surface for subsequent spraying by measuring
the reflectivity and has proved reasonably successful under laboratory
conditions. The present need is to ascertain the performance of this
reflectivity meter under shop and site conditions. The opportunity
to carry out such tests at H.M. Dockyard, Devonport, was offered by the
Ministry of Defence and a series of tests was made on 16th June, 1965
An appraisal of the Guttinger statistic 611
Using the Systems Design procedure developed at Cranfield, an
appraisal of the Guttinger Statistic 611 has been carried out; in
particular, the interface of the machine has been redesigned
A report on the survey carried out at W. H. Allens, Queens Works, Bedford
The original terms of reference under which the project was undertaken
are included in this report and the requirements requested are satisfied.
On initial contact at Aliens, I was introduced to Mr. Colson, who
informed me that his company of Consulting Engineers had introduced a
scheme of methods engineering work study and incentives payment and that
the results on the grinding section were not fully satisfactory. The
machine loading was based on synthetics which were working in other
factories. There was methods and planning charts from which the
Methods Engineering and Planning Sections worked when loading work onto
the shops and it was required that the shortcomings of these charts
should be corrected. I was then introduced to Mr. Sargent, Chief Methods
Engineer. He assigned one of his staff to me. It was suggested
that we went down to the shop floor and consider the Lumsden grinding
machine, as this machine stalled when the feeds and speeds suggested
from the methods sheets were applied, but the main problem which it was
essential to tackle as soon as possible was the grinding of gudgeon
pins. Details of the work carried out on each machine are included in
separate sections
Warehouse model: report no. 1
1.1 The purpose of the research project has been outlined
in Appendix 5 of the report to the Research Fellowship
Council Meeting on 10th November, 1955.
1.2 In this first report we consider the simplest model of
a warehouse only, that is a warehouse that receives and
issues goods in the same unit and in which storage
locations, each holding exactly one unit, can be arranged
in the form of rectangular blocks (7,xatfrple : pallet
racking) with unhindered excess to any unit located in
the block. We consider that there are N different types
of goods to be stored, that the average rate of movement
through the warehouse for each type is known, and that
input and output is variable.
1.3 We assume that the aim is to minimise handling cost or
handling effort, and that this can be measured by a value
which is directly proportional to 2 horizontal and 1
vertical distances from reference points (goods receiving
and despatch points) to unit storage location in the block.
