The Czech Polonophile Edvard Jelínek and the Topic of Russia in his Work

In scholarly circles, the name of the Czech writer and journalist Edvard Jelínek is usually associated with interest in Polish topics. Most of his friends and scholarly contacts were Polish, which also was in line with his numerous publications concerning Polish cultural traditions. However, Jelínek also had significant knowledge of the cultural, political, and social life in other Slavic areas, which he utilized as the editor of «Slovanský sborník» (Slavic Proceedings), a journal focused on all Slavic areas (published in 1881, 1883–1887). In this article, we demonstrate that, mostly at the beginning of Jelínek’s career, Russian topics also appeared in his texts, mainly Russian literature, culture, theater, and the issue of the beginning of Russian-Czech contacts. He published these texts primarily after his first visit to Russia in 1877. In the 1870s, the retired Russian officer Nikolaj M. Yendogurov had a significant influence on him, helping him to understand some Slavic issues and to perfect his knowledge of Russian. Starting from the 1890s, he expressed his opinions regarding the Russian-Polish conflict in several texts. There, he disagreed with the Russification of the Polish cultural environment and drew attention to the language rights of the Polish people. However, his works were not anti-Russian in character, and he expressed appreciation for Russian culture. The issue of Russian-Polish relations also appears in his literary prose works, e.g. in the novel «Motýlek z Norské pohádky» (The Butterfly from the Norwegian Fairytale)

The article considers the theoretical and practical aspects of verbalization processes in the Ukrainian language which result in the formation of lexico-grammatical (functional) homonyms. The research aims to reveal the mechanism of the formation of such linguistic units, based on three main criteria for distinguishing the parts of speech: semantic, morphological, and syntactic. The semantic preconditions, causes, and regularities of the verbalization processes are established, taking into account the syncretic nature of the analyzed transpositions. The specific cases of the transition of interjections and onomatopoeias into verbs are described. The verbal nature of derivative words is substantiated and it is confirmed by the following features: the predicate function, the possibility to determine the aspect and tense characteristics based on the contextual environment, the possibility to govern syntactically dependent words. Functional homonyms which include transpositions that acquire verb features are divided into syncretically-undifferentiated, syncretically-differentiated, and potentially syncretic. No syncretic-differentiated functional homonyms have been found among the analyzed onomatopoeic pairs. The morphological and syntactic changes which the words undergo during the transposition are analyzed. The phenomena of functional homonymy are described from the standpoint of the theory of transposition, the concept of diachronous and synchronous transposition is described. The research has revealed that the phenomenon of verbalization is caused by the internal laws of language development and that in the course of the transition of exclamations and onomatopoeias into verbs, the part of speech meaning of interjection (in interjections) and sonority (in onomatopoeias) changes into the processual meaning. Complex relationships between words in the field of morphology have been identified. The focus has been made on the dynamic processes in the parts of speech system

The content of the concept of language purity in the works of the outstanding linguist I. Ogienko is considered. The stylistic vocabulary and other scientific researches and textbooks contributed to the normalization of spelling of certain words, the choice of grammatical forms, expressions, the affirmation of the literary language common to the two parts of Ukraine. The main semantic accents of the multidimensional notion of language purity and an important communicative feature of speech culture – purity of speech – are summarized. Pure language is not a special quality of language, but a manifestation of the dignity of language, that is, a conscious choice of the speaker, the relation of language between the literary language and the moral consciousness of man. The purity of language is one of the manifestations of correctness, these two concepts are most closely related. Linguistic aspects of the expression of the purity of language - orthoepy, vocabulary, and intonation. Pure speech is a normative language at all levels of language, in which there are no extra-literary elements of language (vernacularisms, barbarisms, vulgarisms, stationery, stamps, vocabulary, jargon, parasites, etc.). The sociolinguistic phenomenon – surzhyk, which destroys the language from within, is investigated. The purity of language is a sense of measure, taste, expediency in the selection of linguistic units. It concerns the use of foreign words, jargon, slang; Accent is placed on the youth environment. The purity of language is the quality and effectiveness of communication. Four stages of the emergence of dictionaries, textbooks, recommendations, monographs aimed at improving the purity of the language and enhancing the speech culture have been investigated. The most common modern electronic resources on cleanliness and enrichment of the Ukrainian language are described. Perspective directions of research on the manifestation of the purity of language and speech in different spheres are noted

Nominalization Processes in Sentences Expressing the Causal Relation (on the Basis of Polish and Bulgarian Material)

    No full text
The study is devoted to nominalization processes in sentences expressing the causal relation that can be paraphrased using pure causatives (verbal exponents of the causal predicate). The causal predicate itself is modelled according to Stanisław Karolak’s theory of aspect. Considering that this work is not theoretical in nature, its main merits lie in the description of linguistic facts. The application of predicate-argument structure theory enables a comprehensive description of syntactic and pragmatic features of discrete causative predicative expressions. The study formulates strict rules which govern their use and verifies certain claims concerning such issues as the distribution of a “raised” object and the semantic category of time. Each predicative expression is given its functional equivalent in the other language.Publikacja dofinansowana z programu „Doskonała Nauka” Ministra Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego. The work was financed from the “Excellent Science” Programme of the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education
