The linguistic idea of the numeral in Russian grammars of the 18th-19th centuries

Некоторые ученые отождествляли числительные с именами прилагательными, некоторые рассматривали их как группу слов со значением числа, объединяющую в себе слова двух основных типов имени (существительные и прилагательные), а другие считали их третьим, отдельным типом имени. В более поздний период, когда существительные и прилагательные перестали считаться разновидностями одной части речи (имени), многие ученые по-прежнему не рассматривают числительные в качестве отдельной части речи, отождествляя их, например, с прилагательными. Состав класса в работах разных авторов неодинаков, однако в него всегда входят слова типа «три», «пять» (определенно-количественные) и, как правило, типа «третий», «пятый» (порядковые).W książce przedstawiona zostaje analiza rozwoju koncepcji liczebnika w gramatykach rosyjskich XVIII-XIX w. W pierwszych pracach gramatycznych liczebnik nie był traktowany jako odrębna część mowy. Niektórzy uczeni utożsamiali liczebniki z przymiotnikami, inni rozpatrywali je jako grupę wyrazów o znaczeniu związanym z liczbą, łączącą w sobie wyrazy dwóch podstawowych typów imienia (rzeczowniki i przymiotniki), jeszcze inni zaś dostrzegali w nich trzeci, oddzielny typ imienia. W późniejszym okresie, gdy rzeczowniki i przymiotniki nie były już traktowane jako podtypy jednej części mowy (imienia), wielu uczonych nadal nie uważało liczebników za odrębną część mowy, utożsamiając je np. z przymiotnikami. W pracach różnych autorów klasa ta pod względem składu przedstawiana jest niejednakowo, natomiast zawsze obejmuje ona wyrazy typu „три”, „пять” (tzw. liczebniki główne określone) oraz, na ogół, wyrazy typu „третий”, „пятый” (liczebniki porządkowe).This book sets out to analyze how the idea of the numeral developed in Russian grammars over the course of the 18th and 19th centuries. In the first works on grammar, the numeral was not treated as a separate part of speech. Some scholars identified numerals with adjectives, others viewed them as a group of words the meanings of which are associated with number and which belong to one of two basic types of the name (i.e., nouns and adjectives), while yet others saw in numerals a separate, third type of the name. Later on, when nouns and adjectives were no longer considered as subtypes of one part of speech (the name), many scholars still did not regard numerals as a separate part of speech but identified them with, e.g., adjectives. In terms of composition, the class of numerals was represented differently by different authors but it always encompassed the words “три”, “пять” etc. (so-called definite cardinal numerals) and usually the words “третий”, “пятый” etc. (ordinal numerals)

THE WAYS OF EMPHASIZING THE INTENSITY OF EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE HAGIOGRAPHIC TEXTS OF THE SYNODAL PERIOD
Get PDFThe paper provides the analysis of emotive vocabulary usage in the hagiographic texts of the synodal period: The Life of Dimitry of Rostov, The Life of Hilarion of Suzdal, The Life of Mitrophan of Voronezh, and The Life of Tikhon of Zadonsk. The factual language material has been analyzed with respect to the complex approach to the language in use, i.e. intralinguistic analysis of language unit structures, paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations at various levels of the language hierarchy, and their functional realizations in the contexts under study. The markers of one of the most important characteristics of emotional experience – its intensity – include the use of lexical units expressing the emotions of high intensity in direct or figurative meaning, as well as non-emotive verbs with semantics of unusually active action or its abrupt termination to denote the emotional experience of the subject of action; use of words denoting opposite positive and negative emotional experiences or their manifestations in the same context; contextual specifiers of measure and degree; indication of emotional experience's duration, emotional impact's speed, the universality of feelings' manifestations; tautological repetitions; gradation method. Comparison of the obtained results with the results of analysis of ancient Russian and old Russian texts makes it possible to identify the dynamics of methods of expressing the feelings of high intensity

Who is Who in Fourteenth- Century Novgorod? Evidence from Hanseatic Sources*
Get PDFhis article analyses the names of Novgorodians that appear in two Hanseatic documents from the beginning of the fourteenth century. Together, they shed further light on the identities and relationships of individuals in medieval Novgorod. In the first document, dated 1331 and written in Middle Low German, I will concentrate on a person called Thyrentekey. I will propose that this individual is the same person that is mentioned in a birchbark document (under the name Terentij Koj) and in the First Novgorod Chronicle (Terentij Danilovič). With regard to the second Hanseatic document (1311–1335), which is in Latin, I will examine a mysterious and distorted list of names of Novgorodians (and Pskovians), who “were betrayed by their own slave, who is called drelle in the vernacular.” This list most probably includes the name of the posadnik Semen Klimovič (symon filius klementis), whose son, Jakun, figures in the 1331 document (jacone symonen sone possatnicke), together with Thyrentekey

No full textThe article studies the processes of univerbation in Eastern Slavic and Modern Greek, special attention is paid to their role in terminological systems, the need to conduct this analysis in the context of new paradigms of word-formation is emphasized. It is also essential to distinguish it from compressives in language comparative research. The analysis has established similarities and differences of substantivation, univerba- tion being suffixational phenomenon through the prism of compounding and affixa- tional word-formation.
