Russia Triumphant: War Poetry in the Eighteenth Century

    Get PDF
This paper deals with a variety of lyric poetry that was widely cultivated under Catherine II — the poetry of war. This poetry was written almost always as oc- casional court poetry; it flourished in the general context of festivities organized in celebration of the Russian successes in the numerous wars of the period. The analysis takes into account not only the main poets, but also the minor poets in order to receive a fuller picture of the period’s mentality. Presenting themselves as loyal subjects, the poets dedicated their texts mostly to Catherine II, congratulating her on her victories and praising her multifarious virtues. This panegyric element sheds a light on the cult of the empress and the specifics of her contemporary image. But the poets addressed their works not only to Catherine, but also to her victorious generals and in some cases also to the armed forces. In practicing this kind of poetry, the authors not only showed their patriotism, but also their poetic virtuosity and their erudition: their poetic task was to translate the well-known military facts into the solemn “language” of the “high style”. Writing a victory ode was a celebratory act sui generis: according to a venerable tradition of classical antiquity, the poetic word was able to transcend time, ensuring eternal glory. Remaining close to official doctrine, the poets were nevertheless able to express their own patriotic view on the ongoing wars. This patriotism came in two kinds; each one represented a certain attitude to war. The first was a radical patriotism that advocated the pursuit of national glory by the ruthless use of military power in foreign politics. The second kind was a moderate patriotism that saw war as a necessary evil; it obsessively strove to reconcile Catherine’s bellicose politics with the traditional ideal of а “just war”. The article closes with a discussion of war poetry in its relation to the peace-loving ideals of European Enlightenment

Scholars distinguish a narrow approach and a broad approach to the univerbation. According to the former, the univerbation is defined as a derivation by adding suffixes, whereas the latter focuses on the process when words and word junctions turn into lexemes. Cyber juxtaposed compounds involve combinations that (a) function exclusively on the internet as well as (b) combinations traditionally associated with the Net

The article considers the principles of forming the meaning of verbs formed from nouns. Intralinguistic and extralinguistic features contribute the formation of the semantics of verbal units. Two groups of verbs are characterized, differentiated depending on the hierarchical structure of semantic features in the structure of contextual refiners or motivating substance. The first group includes verbs, in the semantic structure of which the contextual refiners are nuclear seme. It is shown that the semantics of such verbs outside the context is not uniquely determined. This leads to the formation of the occasional meaning, which is created in speech use and not fixed in dictionaries. The semantic structure of new formation is based on the semes of words that make up the context environment, the verbs of the first group have the potential to denote any process that is in any way connected with the producing noun. The second group consists of verbs, in the semantic structure of which the semes of the motivating noun is nuclear, which determines the predictability of the meaning of the derived verb. This meaning can be called innovative. In the basis innovative meaning is seme of the motivating nouns in a particular speech use and has the potential to get a fixation in the dictionary as one of the lexical-semantic variants. The source of the analysis of verbal units was the publication of modern media

The Unattainable Standard — Zagreb Dialect Meets Standard Croatian Accentuation

    Get PDF
The paper discusses the accentual accommodation by speakers of the urban dialect of Zagreb (the capital of Croatia), which has a dynamic free accent, to the Standard Croatian (Neo-Štokavian) pitch accent (with rising and falling tones). The accommodation occurs in formal settings — the basis of this research is the corpus of 16 one-hour interviews with native Zagreb dialect speakers (8 male, 8 female) from a TV show on Croatian national television (HRT). The Zagreb dialect speakers cannot fully reproduce the prescribed standard accentuation, so they only approximate it by inconsistently changing the place of stress. The level of accommodation varies among speakers. The prescribed Croatian standard accentuation is different than in languages like English, because it cannot be acquired fully by many speakers due mainly to reasons of phonetic complexity. The basics of the Zagreb dialect accentuation and its complex relation to the standard language accentuation (due to many innovations in the dialect and a range of conservative and innovative varieties) are also analyzed. This paper is the first to describe the phenomenon in detail, based on concrete data

As an expression of the tendency towards language economy, structures resulting from univerbirane illustrate the shortening of the text in favour of the code. They constitute one-word formations motivationally connected with denotational phrases, whose structure includes a modifying word underlying the onomasiological motive, e.g. trichlenna komisiya - trichlenka. The shortening of the text is manifested in replacing a generally used reproducible phrase with a one-word denotational unit. This is accompanied by the preservation of the concept, with which both types of denotational units are connected, cf. kirilska azbuka and kirilitsa

The paper focuses on the findings of the experiment, which involved Russian native speakers aged between 17 and 24 (both males and females). The objective of the experiment was to derive an algorithm of communicative behavior of interpersonal communication's participants and to determine the sequence of verbal / non-verbal actions of a communicant in various situations. The experiment is based upon the theoretical foundations of the autopoiesis theory by H. Maturana and F. Varela, which views communication as a natural response of the living system to a dissonance occurring between it and its niche. On the basis of this theoretical premise we can model communicative behavior of a person as a non-linear sequence of verbal / non-verbal actions. Their features and the very number of such actions hinge on the relevance of dissonance-triggering factors for the communicant. The statistical analysis and the interpretation outlined in the paper help unveil whether such communicative behavior is stereotypical or is determined by the communicant's personality. To uncover group-related characteristics of communicative behavior with a focus on gender and society-determined characteristics, the cluster of subjects has been further subdivided into smaller and more unified clusters. The trends identified have been scrutinized, interpreted and supported with relevant examples of the subjects' responses

INTONATION AND SOUND MEANS OF ORTHODOX MISSIONARY SERMON OF THE EARLY 21ST CENTURY

    Get PDF
The paper reveals the specifics of the prosodic organization of the modern missionary sermon. We present the results of analyzing the use of intonation and sound means in sermons posted in the video blog "Batushka answer". It is revealed that the intonation and sound structure of the sermon has a number of features associated with the sequential reproduction of individual prosodic markers of the sound of the modern pastoral word, a reduction in the volume of archaic phonetic elements, as well as the redistribution of the frequency of use of a number of phonetic means. We've found out that the missionary preaching actualizes separate phonetic markers, constitutive for the genre as a whole, such as modern orthoepic norms, the principles of proportionality and symmetry in the division of the speech stream, the use of tonal and dynamic components of intonation, to highlight the optional centers of intonational structures. It is determined that the reduction in archaic phonetic elements in the modern missionary preaching is due to the following factors: the lack of demand for duration as a marker of major intonation centres; the reduction in the frequency of using this marker for the formation of optional centers; actualization of pronunciation properties ascending to the old Church Slavonic traditions; reduction in the number of two-point and multi-point intonation patterns and accent structures. We characterize the redistribution of the frequency of using the basic intonation types, and show that this leads to the emergence of new stylistic meanings and to the transformation of stylistic colouring of its sound in general
