The present research has been conducted within the scope of such relevant direction of linguistics as functional lexicology, and is associated with the identification of semantic modifications of the word, which are conditioned by contextual features of its use. The adjectives atomic and nuclear became the object of the analysis: we give their characteristics in the lexical system of the Russian language, present the frequency of their use in different types of discourse, study more than 300 contexts of their use with nouns in the modern political discourse. The adjectives are studied in their direct and figurative meanings in neutral texts, as well as in pejorative (negative) and ameliotory (positive) contexts. It has been established that the Russian political discourse is characterized by prevailing use of adjectives atomic and nuclear in direct meaning. It has been revealed that the basis of metaphorization as the main way of creating figurative meanings of the adjectives in the political discourse is represented with such features as powerful release of energy, concentration, innovativeness, progress. We show the mechanism of leveling the pejorative axiological component of the phrase atomic bomb arising from its use in direct meaning and the appearance of ameliotory connotative meanings in the neutral phrase nuclear reactor. It has been found that the units under study are not recorded by lexicographic sources in figurative meanings, since they express an occasional sense in the political discourse

The role of national modules in the development of the iSybislaw (Database of World Slavic Linguistic Studies), which has the functions of information retrieval and research computer linguistic system is considered. Particular attention is paid to the prospects for the development of the Ukrainian module of this system, which the team of researches from the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine create since 2012. The approaches to solving problems of variability and synonymy of Ukrainian linguistic terms, their equivalence to terms in other Slavic languages in the language of keywords as information retrieval language of iSybislaw, the possibilities to optimize the search for information in the system and the formation of the computer thesaurus of modern linguistic terms are presented. Comparison of the created Ukrainian module of iSybislaw with the basic vocabulary of Polish linguistic terms proves the necessity of finding criteria for the determination of equivalence between Ukrainian terms and other Slavic linguistic terms without distorting the real picture of their functioning in the Ukrainian scientific tradition. The interconnection of the iSybislaw system with other Slavic Internet resources will enable for its users to get acquainted with the wider and deeper time, genre and territorial perspective of studying particular Slavic language, as well as the state of Slavic studies in general in a certain national linguistic tradition

The Grammar of Violence: Insights from Danish Ethnosyntax and the Wierzbicka-Pinker Debate

    Get PDF
This paper explores the Danish keyword vold ‘violence, abuse’ and its associated ethnosyntax. Calling into attention (i) the differences and similarities of violence-related concepts in ethnolinguistic communities, and (ii) the key role played by ethnosyntax in the elaboration of violence, vold, and similar concepts, the paper aims to open a new ethnolinguistic research agenda for the study of negative sociality constructs and the positive value system hidden in such concepts. The Danish ethnosyntax of vold ‘violence, abuse’ hidden in compound morphology is scrutinised. Focusing on the compounds hustruvold ‘wife vold’ and politivold ‘police vold’, the paper explores the hidden conceptual syntax embedded in such coinages. Exploring more recent constructs, such as forældrevold ‘parent vold’, it is argued that Danish ethnosyntax embodies a view of the world in which traditional authority figures are coded as aggressors: men, police, parents, whereas women, citizens and children are coded as victims

Looking at Europe through a Basque lens: Ethnolinguistic considerations of two worldviews

    Get PDF
The main thesis of this article is that the Basque linguacultural complex provides a window onto conceptual frames reflecting a much earlier animistic worldview, reminiscent of the type of relational cosmologies characterizing ethnographically documented hunter-gatherers. In this respect, even though the Basque language is classed as pre-Indo-European, what that classification might mean from the point of view of the cosmological frames of thought entrenched in the Basque language is taken into consideration, especially the fact that, until the late 20th century, the orally transmitted belief that humans descended from bears was still circulating among Basque speakers. Ethnographic and linguistic evidence points to the possibility that a similar animistic linguacultural substrate was operating across much of Europe during the period in which Indo-European languages and their associated conceptual frames were gaining a foothold. Drawing on the methodological and theoretical tools of cultural linguistics and Habermas’ concept of lifeworld (Lebenswelt), defined as a culturally transmitted and linguistically organized stock of interpretative patterns, a set of asymmetric polarities are analyzed. These are deeply engrained in the linguaculture of Western thought, namely, man/woman, human/ animal and culture/nature. Moreover, all of them rest, ultimately, on the notion of human exceptionalism. When viewed from the indigenous frames of the Basque language, these oppositions disappear or are represented in ways more in accordance with the underlying animistic ontology and associated conceptualizations of relational personal identity. In short, the conceptual frames discussed in this study, understandings that are projected through the linguacultural nexus of the Basque language, often align with the ways that animism has been interpreted as expressing a form of relational ontology in which notions of kinship, mutual aid and reciprocity are emphasized and hence closely intertwined. Consequently, the resulting worldview provides a different vantage point for looking back at Western thought and what might have been going on in Europe in times past

(White) lies and (pieux) mensonges: ethnolinguistic elaborations on not telling the truth

    Get PDF
The fact that most European languages have a word similar to the verb lie has led many to believe that lying is a universal cognitive category, that all human beings have an intuitive understanding of what it means to lie, and that all forms of discourse involving a lack of truth can be analysed as forms of lying, wherever they occur. This is a myth. Within Europe itself, there are differences, and these become more outspoken once we move further away. Even a Melanesian creole such as Bislama, in spite of being English-based, has no strict equivalent to the verb lie; the closest it gets is by means of the verb giaman, which, unlike to lie, refers to a fairly common, sometimes even a necessary course of action. On the other hand, whereas, at least from an Anglo point of view, lying is mostly felt to be morally reprehensible, there are instances that are not as straightforward. In English, lies that are deemed less bad than others are often referred to as white lies. Other terms exist, but this one is by far the commonest and has a high degree of cultural salience. Does the concept exist in other languages, e.g. French? The phrase pieux mensonge comes to mind. I propose to show that white lies and pieux mensonges are overlapping categories, but that they carry different connotations, which I will spell out using a tool known as the Natural Semantic Metalanguage

Słowacka proza naturyzmu w polskich przekładach — strategie wyboru i translacji w zmieniającej się perspektywie kulturowej drugiej połowy XX wieku

The author of the article analyses Polish translations of the Slovak naturalist prose which is a very interesting phenomenon at the primary horizon and appears to be the most frequently translated into Polish. The author concentrates on the representative translations, strategies for selection and strategies for translation of the naturalism in the changing cultural perspective of the second half of the twentieth century. Historical and cultural situation, historical distance between the originals and their translations has the biggest influence for the selection of the texts but also for the strategies the translators choose during the process of translation. In the perspective of cultural and literature turn in Poland in 1956, the Slovak naturalist prose had the chance to appear in the second horizon but it did not affect recipients and did not have the possibility to impact the development of the receiving literature. The author of the article tries to answer the question why it did not happen

Przekład literatury konceptualnej Studium przypadku lokalizacji Paint the Rock Shiva Kotechy jako Namaluj Popka

    Get PDF
The article presents case study of a creative practice-based project in which the experimental conceptual book Paint the Rock by Shiv Kotecha was translated into Polish using a conceptual translation strategy. The original is an unconventional “coloring book” that invites the reader to paint American male celebrities from memory. The Polish translation, Namaluj Popka by Aleksandra Małecka and Piotr Marecki, remakes the original experiment, replacing these global household names with figures from the Polish local popular imaginary in a ludic localization. The authors describe the context of the original literary work, the translation process, the new context for reception in Poland, with a special focus on the role of the translator as the ambassador of new trends in literature and the creative and critical potential of conceptual writing and translation strategies
