The article explores André Lefevere’s rewriting / refraction perspective in literary translation on the basis of the Polish and English versions of Czesław Miłosz’s book Piesek Przydrożny (Road-side Dog). Differences between the original and its translation identified in the analysis suggest that Road-side Dog may be seen as a Lefeverian “rewriting” of the original and as such it both confirms and strengthens a unique position of Miłosz and his oeuvre in American literary system

Интертекстуальность как переводческая проблема: эксплицитность и узнаваемость при переводе из «литератур небольших народов»

The paper focuses on the issue of translation of intertextual markers in literature, with a special emphasis on Polish poetry in English renditions. The material and perspective are chosen with a view to exploring source-culture references in the literatures less known internationally, which, it is argued, is a sphere of particular cultural resistance to translation. The aim is to survey the importance of the level of explicitness of intertextual links for the task of a translator, but also to investigate recognisability — the other crucial factor — as well the interrelation of the two. First some assumptions about the conditions conducive to a successful rendering of intertextuality are formulated and tested. Then, based on several poetry excerpts, it is shown how, on the one hand, the level of explicitness influences the translators’ choices and, on the other, how explicitating or implicitating procedures in translation influence the interpretative potential of the texts. Some instances of overcoming the resistance thanks to creative efforts are indicated. One of the author’s tenets is that even a not readily decipherable marker can serve as a signal of intertextual relations

Salience Criteria of Indirect Non-Entrenched Textual Names in Russian: Corpus-Based Research

The article approaches textual foreground specifics of indirect non-entrenched names and nominal groups in the Russian language. These constructions reveal the results of particular focus shifts with both identifying and characterizing or classifying components as part of their referent representation. To foreground them, the author uses a group of linguistic markers or means of expression with the intention of bringing forward their relevant character and helping the reader recognize the referent. The research is corpus-based, featuring Russian narrative prose texts, which serve to define the linguistic (lexical and syntactic) means of expressing indirect non-entrenched textual names and nominal groups. The data help reveal the salience criteria where salience is defined through significantly higher frequency of expression means. It also uncovers some resonance dependencies of these salience criteria (with graphical criteria role considered as well), which are manifested to foreground indirect non-entrenched names. The work shows that apart from general salience markers (rhematic position of names, mononuclear syntactic phrase, featuring the author’s perspective, etc.), which have become the research issue in the works of T. Givón, B. Wårwik, A. Siewierska, M. Ariel, O. Iriskhanova and some other linguists, there may be distinguished the salience criteria specific for the textual indirect non-entrenched names and nominal groups. Relative frequency analysis of 28 test parameters values revealed the group of these salience criteria, among which are the textual markers of embodied construal, the presence of a direct name in pre-position, a discreet or single referent marking, null propositional distance between direct and indirect names, coordinative chain of direct and indirect names, predicative position and position in mononuclear sentences, the presence of identifying attributes and rhematic markers in co-referent indirect names

The research note reviews the second volume of Iskra Hristova-Shomova’s study, which focuses on the Old Slavonic tradition of the Praxapostle. It analyzes the typology and history of the menology and the synaxarion, the repertoire of Slavonic calendars, and their connections with various types of the Byzantine rite, as well as the language of the troparia. The author expands the number of handwritten and early printed sources as compared to the first volume. The core of the book represents synaxaria fragments, accompanied by linguistic-textual comments. Also, there is an extensive reference apparatus, including a Slavonic-Greek lexical index, lists of saints’ names, incipits of Slavonic troparia, and texts of Greek troparia in alphabetical order. The author of this research note discusses the possibilities of further linguistic analysis provided by the published material, and comments on some lexical and grammatical peculiarities of troparia

The article focuses on analysis of colour terms in the system of Ukrainian business names. Similar to other proper names classes, it is of multilinguistic character, with stems from Ukrainian, English, and Russian being used. In several cases ‘colour’ motivation is of secondary character when business names include place names with colour terms. Motivation of such names is of rather locative nature, however, they can maintain certain ideological connotations

“Letter of a Sicilian to one of his Friends” in Translation by Antiochus Cantemir (1726): History of the Text and Features of its Language

    Get PDF
The article presents a many-sided analysis of a pamphlet by Giovanni Marana translated by Antiochus Kantemir into Russian in 1726. In the first part of the article, we describe various editions of Marana’s pamphlet and establish the one that became the source for Kantemir’s translation. This source is found out to be the publication of the pamphlet in one of the “Élite des bons mots” collections. Next, the correspondence between the text of the translation and the French text is analyzed, the deviations and errors in the Kantemir’s text are revealed and their explanation is given. It is concluded that the surviving manuscript of the translation was made from an earlier one and was not the final version of the text. The manuscript of the translation was published in 1868 as a part of the collected works by Antiochus Kantemir and was subjected to a considerable revision. The second part of the article is devoted to comparing the text of the manuscript and the published text, describing spelling and punctuation corrections, as well as mistakes made during the publication of the manuscript. The contradictions in introduced spelling corrections are noted. In the third part of the article, the technique of translation, ways of transferring lexical and syntactic units to Russian are analyzed. Kantemir uses a large number of borrowed words to describe the everyday life in Paris and France, however, mainly Slavic word-building models are used for translating the behavioral sphere vocabulary. The fourth part of the article describes the stylistic key of translation. While making the language of translation closer to the language of the French original, the translator left Russian as a basis, which he slavicised in two ways: first, with a small number of “background slavonicisms”, evenly distributed throughout the text; secondly, with “slavonicisms-inclusions”, creating points of stylistic tension. It is concluded that the degree of slavicisation of the text is not great
