The article deals with the amendments made by A. P. Tolochko to the traditional chronology of the Russian metropolitans of the 11th cent., compiled by A. Poppe, and shows the weaknesses of both chronologies. Based on the latest epigraphic finds, a new chronology of the Metropolitans until the last quarter of the 11th cent. is proposed: Theophylact was transferred to Russia from the Metropolitan see of Sebasteia sometime before 1015; Theopempt became the Metropolitan no later than 1039; John ascended the throne after 1039 and reigned until 1051; Hilarion became the Metropolitan in 1051 (probably after July 24) and ceased to be in 1052 (before November 4); Ephraim received the Metropolitan see in 1052 (until November 4) and retained it at least until 1055; George, mentioned under 1072, could have become the Metropolitan as early as 1055

Russian language through the prism of national culture and realities

The article focuses on the system of developing linguistic and cultural competence through regional realities, values, personalities, etc. in general secondary educational institutions in the Republic of Belarus. The sociocultural aspect in the coherent linguistic methodological system of teaching Russian and developing learners’ speech is considered as a substantial component of all spheres - language, speech, communication, cultural linguistic study . Cultural linguistic (or linguocultural) aspect is realized through mastering language: 1) as a system of preserving and transmissing cultural values, 2) as a means of comprehending general and nationally-specific (for the Russian and Belarusian) ideals, traditions, customs, values and norms which guide the dialogue of cultures. As an interrelated educational process, the sociocultural aspect implies that students acquire the peculiarities of social relations expressed in meanings (peacefulness, non-aggressiveness, tendency to consent and search for compromises, helping another person, denying unmotivated violence, reasonable needs, etc.). The sociocultural aspect also means developing learners’ ability to comply with the norms that determine these relations

The method used in this article, analysis of co-occurrences, is useful for anyone who wishes to study the semantics of closely related words

The article is devoted to the study of one of the structural elements of the text – a commentary. The author substantiates the concept of a commentary as a speech genre, analyzes a comment based on its functional features. The article deals with the genre specificity of the comment, as well as the peculiarity of communicative-linguistic and linguistic parameters. For analysis the most effective model of the speech genre T.V. Shmeleva, which allows to describe any language and speech genres in accordance with determined by the constitutive genre-forming features. In the process of genre analysis we rely on M. Bakhtin’s introduction of the concept of the “target set” of the genre as a holistic statement, since for the commentary of the speech genre the distinction of the target setup is characteristic of the communicative level of “subject-direct destination” (Y. Lotman), in to which the subject-object relations of opposition are presented. The charge directed at the addressee (implicit/explicit) determines the addressee as a person who violates the generally accepted norms and humiliates the opponent

Between the Transit Prison and the Nobleman’s Drawing-room: Doctor Haas’s Publishing Projects in the 1840s

The article is dedicated to the publishing projects of doctor Haas, a Moscow medical man and philanthropist, and is based on the materials of the ecclesiastical censorship archival holdings. Haas published books aimed at the reforming of convicts who went to Siberia through transit prison. ‘On the margins’ of his enlightenment activities missionary publishing projects, addressed to the educated urban society, were established. Haas could not confine himself to working with prisoners; he wanted to offer the Russian society Christian literature following the traditions of post-Tridentine spirituality. By this time, books and reading had taken shape as a specific sociocultural institute in the educated noble society, where the knowledge of French was acquired from childhood. In such circumstances Haas aimed to ensure not the influence, but the assimilation of Western (Roman Catholic) Christian texts into the Russian culture. The state ban on proselytism rendered the implementation of the most of these projects impossible. However, the institute of the ecclesiastical censorship itself did not rouse inner remonstrance in him. The opinions of Haas and of censors, governmental officials, who regulated the publishing, concerning conversion were hardly divergent. All of them assessed religious conversion positively. The censors followed the orders of the government, accepting in Haas’s publishing projects everything that was in line with state legal norms and political attitudes of those times. The censors did not contradict when the members of the Prison Committee preached Christian kindness to rude and aggressive prisoners. But Haas’s attempts to promote Catholic authors in educated circles turned out to be inacceptable
