Russia’s Quest for the “Historical Jesus”: Tolstoy and Dostoevsky vs. Strauss

The works of theologian David Friedrich Strauss are significant milestones in the development of an academic project known as the “Quest for the Historical Jesus”. As part of the Quest, various researchers tried to reconstruct the life, teachings, and personality of Jesus of Nazareth using historical and philological methods, that is, operating from the standpoint of strict positivism. The purpose of this article is to show that the works of Strauss had a significant impact on the logic and evolution of the religious quests of Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Tolstoy became acquainted with Strauss's ideas around the late 1870s, in a period of intensive intellectual search, which eventually led him to an acute religious crisis and rejection of the official church view on Christianity. The article shows that the writer was ultimately compelled to reject the ideas of Strauss and Renan. At the same time, some elements of Strauss's theory were so close to Tolstoy that these ideas had a definite influence on his basic religious conception. Dostoevsky had the opportunity to become acquainted with the ideas of Strauss in the Petrashevsky Circle. This experience led to a deep life crisis on Dostoevsky's part, too. On the one hand, the writer had a negative view of ideas associated with the works of Strauss and Renan. On the other hand, all of Dostoevsky’s artistic work is directly related to his overcoming the influence of the “Strauss-Renan narrative”, which itself is evidence of the evolution of the writer’s views on faith and religion

The subject of the analysis is the presence of Jan Mukarovsky’s texts in the field of Polish literary theory and aesthetics. The achievements of Czech structuralism, of which he was an outstanding representative, seem to be indisputable, since to this day they are a more or less conscious element of modern knowledge about literature. The Czech structuralism heritage still amazes and intrigues with its scale, and it undoubtedly continues to be a grateful object of research by Polish theoreticians and translators

The article deals with the spelling of the word обладатель (‘dominator, possessor’), an important component of the title of Russian Tsars (e. g. многихъ земель обладатель or отчичь и дѣдичь наслѣдникъ и обладатель, etc.). This word was written in the title in a special manner, namely with two letters a, as ОБЛААДАТЕЛЬ. It is demonstrated in the article that the form with double a reflects the sacralization of the Tsar and his title

    No full text
W artykule opisano wyzwania tłumaczenia wewnątrzjęzykowego — z dialektu peryferyjnego na urzędowy, standardowy język słowacki — na przykładzie tłumaczenia baśni z regionu Szarysz, zachowanych w wiosce Fintice. Baśnie te, zatytułowane Zazračni dzvonček — Zázračný zvonček, ukazały się nakładem wydawnictwa FACE w 2018 roku w formie dwujęzycznej (z tłumaczeniem na język słowacki). W pierwszej części artykułu wyszczególniono peryferyjne aspekty analizowanego tekstu i podkreślono potrzebę wydawania zapomnianych utworów literackich dla podtrzymania tożsamości społeczności i jej dziedzictwa kulturowego. W drugiej części artykułu zawarto analizę przekładu, wskazując różnice między oryginałem a translacją na poziomie morfosyntaktycznym i leksykalnym oraz różnice w stopniu ekspresji

The Lexical Stylisation of Fantasy-Ludic Works by Stanisław Lem in Their Bulgarian Translations

    No full text
This study analyses etymological and word-formation methods employed to create the non-standard vocabulary of Stanislaw Lem’s Cyberiada (The Cyberiad) and Powtórka [Repetition], with a particular focus on neologisms. The analysis also considers equivalents of this vocabulary used by the Bulgarian translators of these works, and translation solutions they decided to apply. As established, differences between their translation strategies led to significant losses in the Bulgarian translation of Powtórka in comparison with the source text.Publikacja finansowana z subwencji na utrzymanie i rozwój potencjału badawczego Instytutu Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk. This work was financed from a subvention for maintaining and developing the research potential of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences

    The 15th-century Synodal Hexameron (Shestodnevets)

The article is devoted to the textual analysis and publication of the short Hexameron, titled Shestodnevets, which became part of the Miscellany from the Synodal collection in the State Historical museum (No. 951). An archaeographical description of the manuscript (dated to around 1460) is given; it is noted that 13 folios from it are now in the Miscellany from the V. M. Undolsky collection (RSL, col. 310, No. 562). The analysis of the Shestodnevets showed that the source for its initial part was the prototype of the Sofiisky chronograph, which had a more elaborate form compared to that conserved in manuscripts. The rest of the text is based on the Palaea Interpretata and “The Word about the Creation of Heaven and Earth”, which is a part of another brief chronograph, Parenios. An attempt to trace the history of the spread of “The Word …” in the Old Russian literature revealed its use as an introduction to the illuminated Palaea Interpretata of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the initial part of which is now largely lost. It turned out that a copy of these pages, in addition to two well-known 16th-century copies, is copied from the “Word …” in a manuscript of the Trinity-Sergius monastery, dated to the end of the 14th or the beginning of the 15th century (RSL, сol. 304/I, No. 39). Four more copies of the same text were also identified. A version of the “Word about the Creation of Heaven and Earth” is also used in the “Word about the Existence of the Whole World”, where the story of the six days, starting with the narrative of Cain and Abel, is supplemented by the “Speech of the philosopher” from the The Tale of Bygone Years. The Synodal Shestodnevets has textual features of “The Word about the Creation of Heaven and Earth” in the Parenios version, but it also contains individual additional fragments from the Book of Enoch. In conclusion, the importance of the Shestodnevets for our knowledge about the book repertoire and the guiding principles of Old Russian authors working on Palaea compilations in the middle of the XV century is underlined. Another significant result is the acquisition of new data on the content and the terminus ante quem for the Sofiisky chronograph’s archetype, the earliest copy of which dates from the 1530s

In the history of language, the middle Ukrainian period is characterized by the usage of two literary languages. On the one hand, the Church Slavonic language continues to take the position of the high status. On the other hand, Ukrainian “simple” language consolidates its position in the “long fixed monopoly genres”. In Ukraine in general, the significance of the 17th century developed under the synthesis of Western and Oriental cultural and education tradition, and it is reflected in the linguistic aspects. Objective of the article – to trace the development of linguistic awareness of Demyan Nalyvayko and his role in the shaping of the then Ukrainian literary language on the basis of translated texts
