Unpacking how wages cause changes in consumer prices by analyzing monthly data with long lags
Previous studies have indicated that wages cause changes in consumer prices, but not all. To address the inconsistency, we compare US monthly data between Jan 2008 and Feb 2020 with Norwegian yearly data between 1955 and 2022. Our motive is that fine-grained monthly data with long lags may reveal a more nuanced picture than crude yearly data with short lags. By including 21 monthly lags, the US data showed that average wages caused changes in the consumer price index (CPI) with an alternating oscillatory pattern where positive and negative effects balanced each other out over time. The wage effect on the CPI was strongest after 13-15 months, illuminating the importance of including sufficient lags. The Norwegian data, conversely, using yearly data with a maximum of two lags, neither before, during, or after the oil crises, showed that average wage changes caused changes in the CPI.publishedVersio
Consistency between inter-institutional panels using a three-level Angoff-standard setting in licensure tests of foreign-trained dentists in Sweden: A cohort study
Licensure exams play a crucial role in ensuring the competence of individuals entering a profession, thereby safeguarding the public and maintaining the quality and integrity of the profession. In Sweden, dentists educated outside the European Union seeking to practise dentistry must undergoa re-certification process. The re-certification process includes a theoretical examination where pass marks are set using a three-level Angoff method. This study aimed to determine the consistency of the Angoff ratings using independent panels at two Swedish universities. Two cohorts of panellists were included in the study: one reference and one external. The reference panel was responsible for rating the upcoming theoretical examinations in the proficiency test, which were used to set the pass mark. The external panel, recruited from a dental school at a university in another region in Sweden, provided ratings after the examinations. Three examinations during 2019–2020 were included in this study (267 items in total). There was a strong correlation (ρ ≥ 0.70, p < .001) between the ratings of the two independent panels, with no significant differences in item ratings across the full exams, dental disciplines, and professional qualifications analysed. This suggests that the three-level Angoff method reliably produces similar standards for assessing the competence of the minimally qualified dentist across different institutions. The expectations of the minimally qualified but still acceptable dentist were comparable between the two independent panels across the three theoretical examinations explored. The alignment between the panels indicates valid, reliable standards across institutions, despite the independent syllabi of the two study programmes. However, while there is an alignment, differences in ratings remain. Consequently, involving multiple institutions in future standard-setting processes could help ensure that the standards reflect a broader range of educational practices, supporting the credibility of licensure examinations.publishedVersio

Living the language of psychotherapy. How therapists use their experiences from being patients in psychotherapy.
Personal therapy is a requirement in several psychotherapy-training programs, and more than 80% of therapists have been psychotherapy patients. No quantitative evidence of the effects on their patients´ outcomes has been presented. However, qualitative studies and expert experiences highlight the value of therapists having been patients themselves. To investigate this further, we used in-depth qualitative methods to explore the experiences of eight early career psychologists. For our data collection, the participants wrote reflexive notes on two occasions, and met for a full day of focus groups. The notes and transcriptions of the focus groups were analyzed from the perspective of reflexive hermeneutic phenomenology. In all, the therapists had been patients in 19 courses of various psychotherapies. The core experiential themes were: (1) their own suffering had been for real; (2) ambivalence of sharing vulnerability; (3) the significance of experiencing theoretical concepts – the language of psychotherapy – in real life; (4) dealing with shame; (5) the need to know that therapists may become so important that the patient can easily be hurt; and (6) the therapist became an inner model that the patient could use. The therapists seemed to use their psychotherapy experiences in their personal development and professional lives. Therapists may have a unique opportunity to benefit from psychotherapy due to the language they have acquired for sharing experiences with their therapists.publishedVersio
Exploring learning in critical realism
Critical realism is a philosophy of science, and not exclusively a theory of learning. However, because philosophic and scientific practice can be considered types of learning, a philosophy of science is likely either to have an implicit theory of learning or to have implications for learning theory, or both. In addition, as a philosophy of science, critical realism can provide general recommendations about how to carry out research on learning. This chapter is therefore an investigation into learning from various critical realist perspectives.publishedVersio
Children's and parents' experiences of home care provided by hospital staff: A scoping review
Aims:
To describe what is known from existing scientific literature on children's and parents’ experiences of hospital-based home care and to identify future research areas.
Design:
The scoping review design used adheres to the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley, and to the PRISMA-ScR checklist.
Review Methods:
A systematic search was conducted, and peer-reviewed scientific papers were screened through the application of Rayyan software. Data were extracted and presented in table and synthesised thematically as narrative text.
Data Sources:
Searches were carried out November 2021 and updated November 2022 in the CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, Academic Search Elite, and Amed databases and Google Scholar.
Results:
A total of 1950 studies were screened and assessed for eligibility. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria by reporting on parents' experiences, whereas five out of these eight studies also reported on the experiences of children. Parents of children with cancer and preterm children reported feeling more in control, being empowered, and being more connected to their children's care team when their children were receiving hospital-based home care. The family's own resources were activated, and they felt more involved in their children's care compared to being in an inpatient setting.
Children with cancer, acute infection, chronic disease, and/or a syndrome reported feeling safer and more comfortable in their home environment and experienced better interaction with their care providers. Some aspects of the children's health-related quality of life (HRQOL) were improved.
Conclusion:
The identified studies indicate that hospital-based home care is a valued alternative to traditional inpatient care by both parents and children. The mode of care has no crucial negative effects. Future studies should encompass the experiences of children with different diagnoses and syndromes and compare patients treated in a traditional hospital setting with those in a hospital-based home-care programme.
Relevance to Clinical Practice:
Children's and parents’ experiences of HBHC indicate that it offers a good solution if parents are well prepared and feel in control. In addition, certain structural conditions must be in place before this type of care can be established: there must be a certain number of patients and the hospital must not be too far away. In the field of neonatal home care, professionals should be more responsive to fathers’ needs and tailor support by focusing on their individual experiences and needs. Our findings may guide and inform best practice for present and future providers of HBHC.
Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care:
Hospital-based home care can offer families a greater degree of autonomy, more flexible care options, improved family functioning, improved communication with care providers, and more control over the child's care. When certain structural conditions are met, such as a certain number of patients, the hospital not being too far away, and parents being well prepared and feeling in control, then hospital-based home care is valued as an alternative to traditional inpatient care. Specific aspects of children's HRQOL may improve, and the psychosocial burden on the family does not increase.
Impact:
HBHC provides a valued alternative to traditional inpatient care and allows families to receive care in the comfort of their own home. Our findings may guide and inform best practice for present and future providers of hospital-based home care.
Reporting Method:
In this scoping review, we have adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist.publishedVersio
