The effects of dynamic finger strength training on bouldering performance and climbing-specific strength tests among advanced and elite level boulderers

    No full text

Interprofessional follow-up for people at risk of type 2 diabetes in primary healthcare–a randomized controlled trial with embedded qualitative interviews

Objective To examine the effects of an empowerment-based interprofessional lifestyle intervention program among people at risk of type 2 diabetes on knowledge, skills, and confidence in self-management, health, psychological well-being, and lifestyle characteristics, and to explore the participants’ perceptions of participating in the intervention. Design and methods In line with the Medical Research Council complex interventions research methods framework, we conducted a randomized controlled trial with embedded qualitative interviews in primary healthcare clinics in Norway between 2019–2021. Of the patients at risk (The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score Calculator (FINDRISC) ≥15 or Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥30) 142 accepted the invitation, and 14 participants from the intervention group participated in individual interviews after the 12-month follow-up. Our primary outcome was the Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13). Secondary outcomes were EQ-5D-5L, EQ-VAS, WHO-Overall health, WHO-Overall QOL, weight, height, waist circumference, and regularity of physical activity. We used thematic analysis to analyse the qualitative data. Results There was no clinically relevant differences of neither the primary nor the secondary endpoints between intervention and control group. As to the qualitative data, we identified two distinct features: ‘Meaningful perspectives on lifestyle changes’ and ‘Lifestyle change is not a linear process due to challenges faced along the way’ putting ownership of their choices in life into picture. Conclusion The negative results of the RCT stand in contrast to the findings given by the participants voices, perceiving the intervention as a key eye opener placing their health challenges in perspective. How to interpret these seemingly conflicting findings of participants being seen, heard, and understood, helping them to take more conscious ownership of their choices in life, and at the same time demonstrating no improvements in symptoms or measures, is a dilemma that needs further exploration. We should be careful to implement interventions that do not demonstrate any effects on the quantitative outcomes.publishedVersio

Sustainability competencies and skills in software engineering: An industry perspective

    Get PDF
Context: Achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) demands a shift by industry, governments, society, and individuals to reach adequate levels of awareness and actions to address sustainability challenges. Software systems will play an important role in moving towards these targets. Sustainability skills are necessary to support the development of software systems and to provide sustainable IT-supported services for citizens. Gap: While there is a growing number of academic bodies including sustainability education in engineering and computer science curricula, there is not yet comprehensive research on the competencies and skills required by IT professionals to develop such systems. Research goal: This study aims to identify the industrial sustainability needs for education and training from software engineers’ perspective. For this, we answer the following questions: (1) what are the interests of organisations with an IT division with respect to sustainability? (2) what do organisations want to achieve with respect to sustainability, and how? and (3) what are the sustainability-related competencies and skills that organisations need to achieve their sustainability goals? Methodology: We conducted a qualitative study with interviews and focus groups with experts from twenty-eight organisations with an IT division from nine countries to understand their interests, goals, and achievements related to sustainability, and the skills and competencies needed to achieve their goals. Results: Our findings show that organisations are interested in sustainability, both idealistically and increasingly for core business reasons. They seek to improve the sustainability of software processes and products but encounter difficulties, like the trade-off between short-term financial profitability and long-term sustainability goals or an unclear understanding of sustainability concepts from a software engineering perspective. To fill these gaps, they have promoted in-house training courses, collaborated with universities, and sent employees to external training. The acquired competencies should support translating environmental and social benefits into economic ones and make sustainability an integral part of software development.publishedVersio

Students’ mathematics self‐efficacy: a scoping review

    Get PDF
Students’ mathematics self-efficacy (MSE) is strongly associated with learning behaviours and performance, and students’ future career choices. In our scoping review, we screened what substantive foci (conceptualization, directionality and role of MSE, change in MSE, and situational specificity of MSE) have been posed and which methodological approaches (participants, analytical methods, data sources, and congruence of measures) have been used in recent (2018–2022) studies of MSE. Studies of MSE were clearly in the mathematics domain with 21 of 49 included studies exploring specific mathematics areas. The key focus was on strength of MSE. International databases (i.e., PISA) have enabled broad generalization, while in-depth qualitative studies enable minute situation-specificity. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies using hierarchically nested designs (i.e., students in classrooms) enable us to draw conclusions at both individual, classroom, and school levels. The current state-of-the-art indicates methodological advancement is rapid and we are likely to see further methodological-substantive synergies in the field of MSE in future studies. We see the potential and need for future mixed-methods studies that continue the focus on MSE as a multidimensional and dynamic concept. Careful consideration of the theoretical background of the construct of MSE continues to be important to bring the field forward.publishedVersio

The coercion dilemma: How employees experience and reflect on the use of coercion in child welfare institutions with drug treatment

Master i sosialvitenskap.

Making vulnerable groups able to connect socially and digitally— opportunities and pitfalls

    Get PDF
This article addresses digital and social inclusion of adults with potential low digital skills. The article presents a case study of how digital learning activities (DLAs) as a service to refugees, immigrants, senior citizens, and young adults neither in education, employment, or training (NEETs), are delivered outside the formal educational system by two libraries and one civic organization in Norway, Denmark, and Belgium. Through the theoretical lenses of social capital building, co-creation and co-producing, the article analyzes how the DLA’s were organized and tailored for the participant’s needs, with an emphasis on cooperation efforts with local sub-partners and representatives from the target groups.publishedVersio
