Culture and Everyday Life in Rela(c)tion

    No full text
In a society that is still experiencing the crisis generated by the pandemic due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, aggravated also by the conflict in Ukraine, it is necessary to rethink the concept of culture, which must be declined in its factual reality of everyday life, since the cultural system and its elements not only produce relationships (meaningful interactions) but also individual and collective social action, hence the use of the term rela(c)tion in the title. The text proposes to discuss the theme of culture and cultural processes with an innovative slant that takes into account the changes that have occurred in recent years. One thinks, for example, of the great interest in processes that lead to social justice, particularly in the Global South, and the sustainability strongly brought about by Generation Z. The authors, without omitting theoretical insights necessary for understanding the transformation of this concept, will proceed to outline the areas, dimensions and cultural processes that influence the dynamics of everyday life and that in turn influence culture itself. The idea behind this book was to construct a reflection on culture that goes beyond the individual definitions of this concept and allows for the exploration of the processes that take place in contemporary society on different levels (individual, social, and cultural) in the unfolding of individuals' everyday lives. To sum up, the objective pursued is to provide a picture of the dynamics, but at the same time of the future challenges to be faced by the different cultural systems due to the continuous changes in society, without neglecting to highlight what may be the orientations and/or innovative models (sustainability, social justice, democratic culture, etc.) that should be pursued for the construction of a cultural system that favours the peaceful and cohesive existence of differences

Prioritization Patterns of Nurses in the Management of a Patient With Delirium: Results of a Q-Methodology Study

    Get PDF
Nurses are required to decide on priorities; however, how they prioritize the interventions toward patients with delirium is still unclear. Therefore, expanding the knowledge on (a) how nurses prioritize interventions to manage episodes of delirium and (b) the underlying prioritization patterns were the aims of this study. The Q-methodology was applied in 2021. A systematic review to identify the recommended interventions for patients with delirium was performed, and a nominal group technique was used to select those interventions that are applicable in daily practice (35 out of 96 identified). Then, using a specific scenario, 56 clinical nurses working in hospital medical (n = 31), geriatric (n = 15), and postacute (n = 10) units were asked to order the 35 interventions (from -4 the lowest to +4 the highest priority) using a Q-sort table. Averages (confidence interval at 95%) were calculated at the group level, and a by-person factor analysis was applied to discover underlying patterns of prioritization at the overall and at the individual levels. At the group level, "Ensuring a safe environment (e.g., reducing bed height)" was ranked as the highest priority (2.29 out of four); at the individual level, three prioritization patterns accounting for a total variance of 50.21% have emerged: "Individual needs-oriented" (33.82% variance explained; 41 nurses); "Prevention-oriented" (8.47%; five nurses); and "Cognitive-oriented" (7.92%; six nurses). At the group level, nurses prioritize safety while caring for patients with delirium; however, at the individual level, they follow three different patterns of prioritization oriented toward diverse aspects, suggesting uncertainty in the actions to be taken-with potential implications for patients

Fish functional groups of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans

    No full text
International efforts to assess the status of marine ecosystems have been hampered by insufficient observations of food web interactions across many species, their various life stages, and their geographic ranges. Hence, we collated data from multiple databases of fish stomach contents from samples taken across the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans containing 944 129 stomach samples from larvae to adults, with 14 196 unique interactions between 227 predator species and 2158 prey taxa. We use these data to develop a reproducible data-driven approach to classifying broad functional feeding guilds and then apply these to fish survey data from the northeast Atlantic shelf seas to reveal spatial and temporal changes in ecosystem structure and functioning. In doing so, we construct individual predator–prey body-mass scaling models to predict the biomass of prey functional groups, e.g. zooplankton, benthos, and fish, for different predator species. These predictions provide empirical estimates of species- and size-specific feeding traits of fish, such as predator–prey mass ratios, individual prey mass, and the biomass contribution of different prey to predator diets. The functional groupings and feeding traits provided here help to further resolve our understanding of interactions within marine food webs and support the use of trait-based indicators in biodiversity assessments. The data used and predictions generated in this study are published on the Cefas Data Hub at https://doi.org/10.14466/CefasDataHub.149 (Thompson et al., 2024)

Operationalizing ethnic origins: a multi-dimensional typology

    Get PDF
This paper explores methodological issues concerning the operationalization of ethnicity in the field of education. The sole criterion of citizenship often applied in official educational statistics may exclude naturalized students with foreign and/or immigrant origins from the “non-national” category. The challenge of collecting reliable statistics on ethnic origins has become crucial in most Western European countries in recent years, as the quantification of this phenomenon is a fundamental starting point for the implementation of policies aimed at contrasting ethnic inequality and discrimination. Resorting to the 2011 Italian general population census, a multi-dimensional typology combining students’ and parents’ countries of birth, citizenship at census and citizenship at birth has been developed. Although the detection of ethnic origins should not be problematic in a country where the acquisition of citizenship is based on the right of blood, results reveal that official statistics classify almost 1 million students (9.35%) with foreign- and/or immigrant origins as nationals. Moreover, an in-depth exploration of the origin country allows one to discern between native-born descendants of non-nationals born abroad and native-born descendants of Italian emigrants born abroad. This multi-dimensional typology may be a useful tool for obtaining more reliable data and implementing more effective policies to address educational inequalities
