Capturing Perceived Gendered Expectations in the Workplace: Development and Validation of the ‘Perfection Bias’ Scale

    Get PDF
Research showed that, in the workplace, women have to meet more requirements than men, a phenomenon that has been labelled ‘perfection bias’. In the current research, we developed and validated a tool to capture individuals’ perceptions of such a phenomenon and its association with women's well-being. In Study 1 (N = 150 women), we identified a one-factor structure of the scale. Study 2 (N = 360 women) replicated the structure of the scale, while Study 3 extended this evidence in a sample of men (N = 471). Study 4 (N = 335 women and men employees) showed that women's higher awareness of being targets of a perfection bias at work was negatively related to their well-being. Overall, the measure developed provides a new tool to examine a specific facet of gender discrimination. Findings might provide useful insights for stakeholders and policymakers to raise awareness concerning gendered expectations and enhance workplace equality

Hayat: Life. Bodies, loves and violence in reception systems = Hayat: Vita. Corpi, amori e violenza nei sistemi di accoglienza

The article reflects on the processes of entry into reception systems through the life story of Hayat, a female migrant who arrived irregularly from Morocco and landed in reception after a long series of vicissitudes. What happens on the threshold between marginality, migration and the political and legal devices of international protection questions the conceptualisations of female bodies, of structural, physical and symbolic violence in the experiences of migrant women, but also the functioning of the different services present in a territory and their levels of intervention. Alliances between formal and informal actors, bonds of friendship, women's solidarity, sensitivities born out of activism for migrants' rights: outside the cone of light of institutions and formal educational work, Hayat's story is configured as a case study that can help those who work in reception to critically reflect on their own practices and on the value of popular schools of Italian in community work

Presence of Biogenic Reef at Sabellaria Spinulosa (Leuckart, 1849) Detected in the North-Est Adriatic Sea (Ravenna Coastal Area, Italy): Preliminary Studies for their Geoconservation and Protection

    Get PDF
Coastal zone management necessitates a comprehensive and shared interdisciplinary understanding of the various processes involved in the anthropogenically accelerated rapid spatiotemporal evolution, including the climatic perspective, that defines the littoral system. This study aims to present an initial assessment of the atypical occurrence and distribution of biogenic reefs belonging to the Sabellariidae family on the sandy coastal beds of the northern Adriatic Sea. Although sporadic mentions of their potential presence have been made, their specific locations and distribution have never been accurately identified and mapped. These fragile biogenic reefs have the potential to serve a functional role in coastal ecosystems, as recognized by the conservation strategies of the Mediterranean and the objectives of the EU Habitats Directive. In addition to describing the primary physiographic, physical-dynamic, and environmental characteristics of the study area, this article outlines the key findings from preliminary geomorphological-sedimentological investigations and compares them with similar Sabellaria structures studied in diverse environmental conditions along the Italian coasts. The research conducted thus far, utilizing side-scan sonar and direct observations by scuba divers, has confirmed their coherence and functionality as valuable habitats and hotspots

«Significativa rappresentatività» e art. 19 St. lav.: quali scenari futuri?

    No full text

In search of a ‘Geography of Youth’: Why young people should matter more in local and regional development studies

    Get PDF
The topic of human agency is currently at the top of the agenda of scholars interested in local and regional development dynamics. This still new, yet well-developed, literature has tended to privilege the study of participation in decision-making processes over non-participation. This article aims to discuss the need for a more systematic integration of a clear ‘denied agency’ such as youth in local and regional development studies. Starting from the consideration of their under-representation in academic work, as well as in policy debates, we argue that scholars should focus on the largely neglected younger generations and their aspirations to provide politicians and policymakers with useful findings and clear guidance on possible alternative and desirable futures

Cultural Consumption, Social Media, and Polarization. Cancel Culture as a Practice of Cultural Resistance and its Critical Issues

    No full text
Cancel culture (CC) has emerged as a highly significant phenomenon in the global context, particularly regarding cultural consumption dynamics and cultural restitution (Stec et al., 2023). Digital platforms, with their ability to instantly connect millions of people, have transformed CC into an interconnected and pervasive phenomenon, capable of migrating offline and influencing business, political, editorial decisions, and contemporary cultural practices (Symons, 2022) while spreading in the platform ecosystem (Van Dijck et al., 2018). On one side, movements advocate social justice, equality, and progressive change, on the other, groups defend traditional values and cultural heritage. This clash is often played out on digital platforms, where CC becomes a battleground for competing ideologies as fringe content migrates from the edges of the online ecosystem to the mainstream arena in an «osmotic process» (Meraz and Papacharissi, 2013). By examining the interplay between CC, the commodification of activism, and fringe democracy, this contribution aims to provide an understanding of CC at the intersection of accountability and entertainment. While visibility and support are crucial for driving change, genuine social movements face new challenges as calls for social justice and purposes of private platforms collide

A process-driven experimental analysis of different wire-fed Directed Energy Deposition processes employing the Laser, Electric Arc and Plasma sources

Among Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) technologies, Directed Energy Deposition (DED) enables large-scale printing. Wire-DED has shown significant growth with various processes using different energy sources, yet a comprehensive comparison is lacking. This study investigates three Wire-fed DED technologies: Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA), and Gas Metal Arc (GMA). A creep-resistant AWS-ER90S-B3 steel wire was used as feed material for the deposition of 20-layers wall specimens from each DED technology, evaluating the effect of heat inputs and deposition rates. For each wall, microhardness tests were conducted, followed by microstructural studies and SEM-EDS analysis. The results revealed that, to achieve similar deposition ratio, PTA results in the highest heat input and LMD the lowest. LMD can be used for obtaining finer dimensions, while GMA has the advantage of providing higher deposition rates; finally, PTA allows for a better printing control and exhibits smoother deposits. The hardness results show slightly higher values for processes with higher energy densities with the order: LMD, PTA, GMA, respectively. All the walls exhibited a bainitic/martensitic microstructure; LMD produced a comparatively finer structure than PTA and GMA, which is in line with the hardness results. The EDS analysis showed comparable elemental composition for the samples produced with the three technologies, without any sign of segregation. The study concludes that either of the processes are competitive for DED-AM applications and the choice of the technology depends on the end-user requirements for deposition rate, process stability or geometrical precision

LIFE4Pollinators’ platform: How citizen science can help monitoring plants and pollinators

    Get PDF
Plant diversity is critical to ensure the future of humanity, as it provides essential ecosystem services and functioning. As recent estimates showed that animal-mediated pollination is crucial for the reproduction of approximately 90% of flowering plants, playing an essential role in maintaining biodiversity and agricultural productivity, effort to preserve plants cannot be disjoined from pollinator conservation initiatives. Despite their importance, pollinators have experienced alarming declines. The LIFE 4 Pollinators project was launched to involve people protecting wild bees and other pollinators in the Mediterranean. This study presents data collected through the project's web-platform, where users uploaded over 2,000 photographs of plant-pollinator interactions between 2021 and 2024. The dataset focuses on the identification of flower-visiting insects and plants, and the current study gives emphasis to citizen scientists' ability to identify plants and pollinators. 1,407 photo-records were analysed, revealing that bees and beetles were the most frequent pollinators, with plants of the Asteraceae and Cistaceae families being the most recorded. Users correctly identified 93.7% of insect taxonomic aggregations and 74.2% of plant species. The study also highlights the recording of threatened, alien, and invasive species, including the vulnerable Callicera spinolae and the invasive Vespa velutina. The plant-pollinator network analysis supports the floral syndrome concept, with floral morphologies like "Head" and "Disk" attracting a wide range of pollinators. The results indicate that citizen science contributes to the identification and monitoring of pollinators, generating knowledge that may be key to the conservation of these organisms and to better understand plant-pollinator interactions. Data collection through citizen-generated photographs allows to significantly expand the geographic area and the magnitude of studies, facilitating large-scale analyses that would be difficult to achieve with traditional monitoring methods. These findings provide a useful basis for future conservation initiatives and the development of policies aimed at mitigating pollinator decline

Evaluating the efficacy of the value factor in stock market analysis: a comparative analysis of market-to-book ratio and Piotroski F-Score

    No full text
We explore the potential ramifications of the Piotroski F-Score (Piotroski, 2000) in the structuring of value portfolios. We test whether the use of the F-Score yields a statistically significant improvement in the returns of a high book-to-market investment strategy relative to the conventional book-to-market (BM) ratio as in the Fama-French 3 factor model. We use a sample going from 2014 to 2022, and find that, contrary to expectations; the risk premium associated with the F-Score is slightly negative, suggesting that the Italian Stock Market does not reward firms with strong financial position as suggested by the score
