Other antiracist geographies: Decentred locations of defiant activism, and Second Abolitions
Based on original archival research, this paper discusses early transnational challenges to paternalistic views of ‘racial democracy’ that took place in Brazilian social sciences in the second half of the 20th century. It analyses the little-known but incredibly relevant work carried out with São Paulo Afro-Brazilian communities by Florestan Fernandes and Roger Bastide, critical sociologists who collaborated with anti-racist activists such as the inspirer of Quilombismo Abdias Nascimento. It first argues for the need of decentring antiracist geographies, considering voices outside the Anglosphere and thinking of alliances that acknowledge scholars’ and activists’ complex positionalities, including matters such as social origin and voluntary activist commitment at the level of the individual. Second, it contends that the biographical contexts of Fernandes, a political persecuted who remained true to his proletarian origins even as an established academic, show the insufficiency of mere theoretical work and the need that critical scholars actively engage with societal change. Fernandes and friends strove for a ‘Second Abolition’ to resolve matters with intersecting colonial, racial and class oppression that Brazilian history had left open after the formal Abolition of slavery in 1888. Their ideas and practices provide insights that can nourish current defiant, abolitionist and anti-racist geographies

Individual Autonomy in AdTech: An EU Regulatory Perspective
In this Chapter, I examine four key approaches through which EU law regulates AdTech to safeguard individual autonomy. These approaches include: (1) consent mechanisms governing data processing, (2) transparency and control over profile-advertising matching parameters, (3) risk management and accountability measures, and (4) restrictions on the exploitation of users’ information and digital interface. Together, these regulatory strategies reflect the EU’s evolving emphasis on autonomy as an overarching legal principle, aiming to provide individuals with meaningful protections against the complex and often opaque practices of digital advertising systems. However, as I will demonstrate, the effectiveness of these mechanisms varies, and shifting autonomy protection to platforms and regulators risks reducing users to passive subjects rather than enabling genuine agency

L’osteonecrosi avascolare (AVN) è una condizione che può coinvolgere potenzialmente qualsiasi distretto osteoarticolare, ma quelli solitamente più colpiti sono la testa del femore e la testa dell’omero. La frequenza con cui si verifica l’AVN nei pazienti con drepanocitosi è molto variabile nei diversi studi pubblicati: i risultati di un recente lavoro condotto nella popolazione pediatrica riportano una prevalenza cumulativa dell’8%, che varia dal 2% a 10 anni al 18% a 20 anni
A pre-post quasi-experimental study of the impact of TDM-guided aggressive pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic target attainment of continuous infusion ceftolozane/tazobactam monotherapy in treating severe Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections: A strategy useful for raising the bar?
Objectives To assess the clinical usefulness of a therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)-guided strategy for attaining an aggressive pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) target of continuous infusion (CI) ceftolozane/tazobactam monotherapy in patients having Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. Methods We performed a pre-post quasi-experimental study including adult patients with documented P. aeruginosa bacteraemia and/or pneumonia who were treated with CI ceftolozane/tazobactam monotherapy tailored by means of a TDM-guided strategy in the period 1 November 2023 to 31 July 2024 (post-intervention phase) compared with patients receiving standard management with CI ceftolozane/tazobactam monotherapy in the period 1 April 2022 to 31 October 2023 (pre-intervention phase). Clinical outcomes were compared between pre- and post-intervention phase. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed for identifying variables associated with microbiological failure. Results Eighty-five patients (48 in pre- and 37 in post-intervention phase) were included. Demographics and clinical features were similar in both groups. No significant difference emerged between groups in terms of microbiological eradication (P = 0.10), 30 day resistance to ceftolozane/tazobactam (P = 0.37), clinical cure (P = 0.26) and 30 day mortality rate (P = 0.79). All patients in the post-intervention phase attained an optimal PK/PD target, allowing the use of a lower ceftolozane/tazobactam CI daily dosing regimen compared with the pre-intervention phase (3.0 g/1.5 g versus 6.0 g/3.0 g; P = 0.06). The only independent predictors of microbiological failure were difficult-to-treat resistant P. aeruginosa isolates in the pre-intervention group (OR 6.99; 95% CI 1.34-36.55), and a ratio of partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of oxygen in the inhaled air (Pao2/Fio2 ratio) <200 in the post-intervention group (OR 18.00; 95% CI 1.86-174.22). Conclusions Our TDM-guided strategy of CI ceftolozane/tazobactam was cost-effective in attaining an aggressive PK/PD target of ceftolozane against susceptible P. aeruginosa strains with lower than standard daily doses without compromising efficacy
Spontaneous Exposure of Mandibular Torus: A Case Report and Surgical Management
Background: Oral exostoses, including mandibular tori, are benign bony outgrowths that can lead to functional impairments when large. Spontaneous exposure of a mandibular torus is a rare event that requires surgical intervention. Case Presentation: A 33-year-old male presented with bilateral mandibular tori. The right mandibular torus had spontaneously exposed, causing pain during mastication, swallowing, and phonation. Surgical removal of the exposed torus and extraction of a carious tooth were performed under local anaesthesia. Conclusion: The patient recovered without complications, and no recurrence of symptoms was noted during the 1-year follow-up. This case highlights the need for prompt surgical intervention in cases of spontaneous torus exposure and the importance of histological analysis
Characterization of small nucleolar RNA retaining transcripts in human normal and cancer cells
Small nucleolar RNAs are non-coding RNAs typically encoded within the introns of both protein-coding and noncoding genes. Interestingly, a significant fraction of snoRNA sequences is found as retained introns of specific mRNA isoforms expressed from their host gene. In the present study, we aimed to define the representation of small nucleolar RNA retaining transcripts across various human cell types and tissues including cancer. We found that these type of transcripts are widely represented in normal tissues and cancer-derived cell lines, appearing both in their full-length form and, frequently, in a shorter variant. We characterized the shortening position, which occurs at or very close to the retained small nucleolar RNA sequence at the 5 ' end. Interestingly, for some transcripts this shorter variant represents the only form detected. In addition, some of the small nucleolar RNA retaining transcripts can be localized into the cellular cytoplasmic fraction. Moreover, our findings point out that a variable but consistent proportion of small nucleolar RNA sequences in cells, tissues, and liquid biopsy samples is, in fact, present as small nucleolar RNA retaining transcripts, indicating that these elements should be carefully considered when snoRNA are evaluated as biomarkers. Considering that short reads and gene-based transcriptomic analysis completely overlooked these transcripts, potentially missing critical insights into their involvement in cancer and other diseases, our results strongly indicate that these type of transcripts should be further investigated in different contexts to better understand their biogenesis, sequence features, presence, and role within cells
Raising Awareness on the Complexity of Decision‐making through Climate Change Education
The increasing prevalence of poly-crisis events, such as geopolitical instabilities, forced migrations, and biodiversity loss, attributed to climate change, are changing how we think about the relationship between science and society. Despite the critical role in addressing these issues, science education often fails to align with social and ecological challenges. This study describes the co-design of a course on climate change focused on the interplay between science and society, emphasising uncertainty and complexity as key interdisciplinary concepts. The course lays its foundations on the work carried out by the research group in previous years on futurising science education, and utilises scenario building techniques to explore future-oriented approaches and sustainable values. The course included a board game designed appositely for the course, based on the En-ROADS global climate simulator to engage students in decision-making processes. Conducted with 34 Italian secondary students, the 20-h extracurricular course exploited various qualitative methods to assess the game’s impact. Findings indicate that the game enhanced students’ awareness of the complexities in policy negotiation, discovering how environmental, technological and scientific issues are intrinsically intertwined with social and economic aspects. This awareness fos
tered the development of a more nuanced, conscious and multidimensional attitude in students toward climate change. At the same time, it demonstrated how, for some individuals, exposure to the complexities of climate change decision-making can result in a sense of hopelessness that must be addressed to encourage a willingness to act for a better future

Il Mediterraneo è stato per secoli un crocevia di culture, commercio e confronti. Oggi più che mai è una regione che ci invita a riflettere sul passato per meglio comprendere le sfide del futuro. Le esperienze storiche dei popoli che vi si sono affacciati, infatti, non solo hanno segnato il loro destino, ma continuano a influenzare le dinamiche sociali, politiche e ambientali del nostro presente. Sulla base di tali presupposti, il volume – con una premessa di Jared Diamond – sfida la prospettiva eurocentrica nella narrazione del passato e propone un’interpretazione della storia attraverso l’adozione di un approccio globale, diacronico e didattico che permette di analizzare le radici profonde di molte questioni geopolitiche contemporanee, come la gestione delle migrazioni, i conflitti religiosi e territoriali. Il Mediterraneo che ne emerge diventa pertanto uno spunto di riflessione sul nostro ruolo di custodi di un patrimonio condiviso per “un’altra storia” delle terre di mezzo
