Designing with Absence: Advanced Design Approaches to Missing Data in Digital Cultural Heritage

    No full text
The digital transformation of cultural heritage has expanded the availability of data while revealing structural forms of incompleteness. This study investigates how missing data are conceptualised in the scientific and design literature on digital cultural heritage and how Advanced Design can transform absence into a resource. The research combines a critical thematic review of peer-reviewed publications from 2010 to 2025 with Research through Design practices and case studies developed within the PNRR CHANGES project. The analysis identifies three main configurations of absence: processual gaps arising along the data lifecycle, epistemic exclusions embedded in standards and knowledge models, and projectual shortcomings related to governance and participation. Based on these findings, a design taxonomy and an operational model are proposed, linking each form of absence to specific levers of intervention, such as transparency of workflows, community-grounded annotation and narration, collaborative metadata writing, and long-term maintenance practices. The results show that Advanced Design provides an infrastructural and reflective framework capable of connecting technical processes, cultural interpretation, and community involvement. The study concludes that incompleteness, rather than a defect, can act as a generative condition for digital heritage, fostering more inclusive, situated, and transformative design practices

Intellectuals in the Shadow of Progress: State and Individual in Argentina and Chile

    No full text
Starting from an analysis of the political context during the second half of the Nineteenth Century marked by conclusion of the State-building process and the onset of Nation-building, this essay traces the intellectual debate on the relationship between State and Individual in the 1870s and 1880s in Argentina and Chile. Through the examination of intellectual journals, the essay outlines the ways and timeframes through which the idea of Progress emerged in South America, highlighting the structural issues needing to be faced: the relationship between State and Catholic Church, and that between State and Citizenship

Il paradosso dell'origine. Dialettica e metodo in Walter Benjamin e Michel Foucault

    No full text

Scorpions on the Cheek, Stars in the Gaze. Astrology, Power, and Poetic Imagination in the Late Abbasid World

    No full text
Across the intellectual sky of the late Abbasid world, the stars no longer served merely as tools of calculation but as mirrors of legitimacy, theology and desire. This article traces the transformation of astrology in Arabic culture—from a science of cosmic governance to a language of poetic imagination—revealing how celestial symbolism became a means of negotiating divine order and human authority. In the later Abbasid centuries, as imperial power waned, astrology became a privileged idiom through which poets reflected on fragility, irony and loss. Through a tripartite analysis, the study examines the political role of astrology in shaping Abbasid ideals of sovereignty, its theological contestation within debates on fate and free will, and its poetic afterlife as a field of aesthetic invention. In the verses of al-Buḥturī (d. 284/897), Ibn al-Muʿtazz (d. 296/908), Abū Bakr al-Arrajānī (d. 544/1149) and al-ʿAntarī (d. 570/1175), the Moon in Scorpio and the scorpion on the cheek cease to portend doom and instead shine as emblems of beauty, wit and peril. By tracing the evolution of astrology from science to art, this paper examines how the late Abbasid imagination transformed the heavens into a stage of persuasion—where rhetoric, faith and legitimacy converged beneath the indifferent stars. Keywords: Astrology, Abbasid poetry, political legitimacy, theology and determinism, poetic imagination, celestial symbolism, Arabic literary cultur

An algorithm aiming at unimodal density-based clustering using Gaussian mixture models

    No full text
We study the problem of unimodal density-based clustering based on Gaussian mixture models. In the proposed approach, clusters are thought of as regions of high probability density separated from other regions of low probability density, encouraging the creation of unimodal clusters. The problem of estimation of unimodal Gaussian mixtures has been solved only in the univariate case, while in this work we try to provide a solution for the multivariate setting. The unimodal density-based clustering works in two stages. First, a new merging algorithm based on the density definition of a cluster is used. This algorithm identifies which components should be merged in order to obtain a number of clusters less than or equal to the initial number of mixture components, on the basis of density similarities. Second, a penalized likelihood approach is adopted to induce unimodality in the merged set of components. We evaluate the performance of both methods on the basis of simulated samples and empirical applications

Negotiating Between Slow Mobility and Heritagisation: Multi-Stakeholder’s Perceptions, Uses and Perspective Views over Heritage Landscape

    No full text
This paper analyses the perceptions, current uses, and perspective views of a peculiar heritage landscape: a linear walkable and cyclable elevated riverbank. Walking and cycling trails are slow-mobility infrastructures that connect different heritage landscapes at local, regional, and transnational levels. At the same time, the trail is a heritage landscape, constantly reshaped and negotiated by the interactions of humans and nature. To highlight the stakeholders’ perspectives towards this specific object, the so-called Percorso Primaro, one of the pilot areas of the H2020 project rurAllure, is taken as a case study. Overlapping in the Argenta Municipality (Italy) with the Via Romea Germanica, a medieval pilgrimage route extending from Stade (Germany) to Rome, the Primaro trail stretches along the banks of the old “Po di Primaro” river, an unmistakable landmark standing out above the almost flat landscape and thus a relevant element of territorial identity. Using a qualitative case study, we explore the locally promoted initiatives to enhance the Primaro trail as a slow mobility axis and heritage landscape. By comparing these initiatives with the viewpoints and goals of supra-local actors, we contribute to a better understanding of the contested representations and practices over the same slow mobility infrastructure and its complex heritage-making and governance process

Dynamic Prediction of Rectal Cancer Relapse and Mortality Using a Landmarking-Based Machine Learning Model: A Multicenter Retrospective Study from the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology—Colorectal Cancer Network Collaborative Group

    No full text
Background: Almost 30% of patients with rectal cancer (RC) who submit to comprehensive treatment experience relapse. Surveillance plays a leading role in early detection. The landmark approach provides a more flexible and dynamic framework for survival prediction. Objective: This large retrospective study aims to develop a machine learning algorithm to profile the patient prognosis, especially the risk and the onset of RC relapse after curative resection. Methods: A cohort of 2450 RC patients were analyzed using landmark analysis. Model A applied a classical cause-specific Cox approach with a landmarking approach, while Model B implemented a landmarking-based RSF (random survival forest) competing risk algorithm. The two models were compared in terms of predictive and interpretative ability. A bootstrapped validation strategy was employed to validate the model’s performance and prevent overfitting. The best-performing hyperparameters were selected systematically, ensuring the model’s robustness within the landmark approach. The study assessed these factors’ importance and interactions using RSF and compared the predictive accuracy to that of the classical Cox model. Results: Model B outperformed Model A (mean C-index 0.95 vs. 0.78), capturing complex interactions and providing dynamic, individualized relapse predictions. Clinical factors influencing survival outcomes were identified across time with the landmark approach allowing for more accurate and timely predictions. Conclusions: The landmark approach offers an improvement over traditional methods in survival analysis. By accommodating time-dependent variables and the evolving nature of patient data, this approach provides a precise tool for profiling RC survival, thereby supporting more informed and dynamic clinical decision-making

The Invisible Chains: Framing Abuse of Dominant Position in Labor Markets

    No full text
This paper examines how the concept of abuse of dominant position can be applied to the labour markets, where demand-side concentration and supply-side fragmentation generate monopsonistic dynamics that suppress wages, limit mobility, and reduce job security. It argues that traditional antitrust tools can be adapted to labour-specific contexts by redefining market boundaries through commuting zones, occupational substitutability, and recognition of artificial fragmentation. The study also addresses how exploitative practices such as non-compete agreements illustrate the concrete impact of employer power, and it highlights the need for a more coherent regulatory approach. Ultimately, it suggests that competition law, when enforced alongside labour law, can play a critical role in safeguarding fairer and more competitive labour markets

A toolbox for volleyball data analytics: a case study on the italian women’s league

    No full text
Data analytics plays a central role in volleyball, offering new ways to enhance team performance and inform match strategies. This paper presents an open-source Python-based toolbox that extends the PyDataVolley library, enabling advanced processing, visualization, and analysis of scouting data. The toolbox includes Machine Learning Clustering algorithms, Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis approaches, and Markov Chain models, and is validated using datasets from the 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 seasons of the Italian Women’s Serie A2 Championship. A case study on the 2025 Italian Cup final between Consolini Volley and Trentino Volley highlights the practical impact of the toolbox. Throughout the 2024–2025 season, Consolini Volley consistently showed superior performance metrics compared to Trentino Volley. However, in the final match, Trentino Volley implemented a targeted tactical strategy informed by the insights from the toolbox, which effectively challenged Consolini’s gameplay. As a result, Consolini Volley exhibited a general drop across all main performance indicators during the final
