Disciplinare e punire
Geraldina Boni, oltre ad aver curato l’aggiornamento del volume, è Autrice esclusiva del Capitolo Ottavo “Disciplinare e punire”. In esso si ripercorre l’evoluzione del diritto penale canonico dal Codex Iuris Canonici del 1983 alla promulgazione di un nuovo Libro VI De sanctionibus poenalibus in Ecclesia sino alle riforme più recenti (come quella riguardante il Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium). Si descrive quindi la normativa ora vigente, soffermandosi sulle sue specificità e sulle principali innovazioni introdotte, nonché su alcuni problemi ancora da risolvere. Peculiare attenzione è riservata allo sviluppo della disciplina dei delicta reservata al Dicastero per la dottrina della fede e in generale alla repressione degli abusi sessuali, di coscienza e di potere nella Chiesa.Disciplining and Punishing. In addition to editing the updated version of the volume, Geraldina Boni is also the only Author of Chapter VIII “Disciplining and Punishing”. The Chapter retraces the evolution of Penal Canon Law from the 1983 Codex Iuris Canonici to the promulgation of the new Book VI De sanctionibus poenalibus in Ecclesia and the most recent reform concerning the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium. The legislation now in force is therefore described, by focusing on its specificities and main innovations, as well as on some problems that are still to be solved. Particular attention is given to the development of the regulation of the delicta reservata to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and, in general, to the repression of sexual, conscience and power abuses in the Church
Surgical management of small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasms in Crohn’s disease: a multicenter retrospective analysis
Background Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with an increased risk of small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasms (SBNENs). However, data on postsurgical outcomes are limited. This multicenter study aimed to analyze the clinicopathological characteristics, surgical management, and outcomes of patients with CD who underwent surgery for SBNENs. Methods A multicenter, retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with a history of CD who underwent surgical resection for an SBNEN between September 1992 and March 2025. Data on patient and tumor characteristics, surgical details, and postoperative outcomes were collected and analyzed. Time-to-event analysis was used to determine the recurrence and survival rates. Results The study included 22 patients (63.4% male) with a median age of 49 years at CD diagnosis. An interval of 108 months was noted between CD diagnosis and SBNEN detection. SBNENs were often an incidental finding during surgery (36.4%). Most tumors were in the ileum (72.7%), were grade 2 (72.7%), and presented with nodal metastases (59.1%). Complete surgical resection (R0) was achieved in 90.9% of cases, primarily through an open approach (68.2%). The postoperative morbidity rate was 50%. No local recurrences occurred over a median follow-up of 120 months, but distant recurrence (liver metastases) was observed in 13.6% of patients, with a cancer-related mortality rate of 9.1%. Conclusion Surgical resection for SBNENs in patients with CD provides excellent long-term oncologic control, although it is associated with considerable perioperative morbidity. The diagnosis is often delayed or incidental, underscoring the need for increased clinical suspicion and potentially enhanced surveillance strategies in this high-risk population

Staging laparoscopy for gastric cancer: European consensus
Gastric cancer is the fifth most prevalent cancer and the third most
common cause of cancer-related deaths globally1. Gastric cancer
frequently metastasizes to the peritoneal cavity. The incidence of
peritoneal metastases at the time of diagnosis, including free
cancer cells in peritoneal washings, ranges from 15% to 32%, and
its presence is associated with a poor prognosis2,3. Due to the
low sensitivity of conventional imaging such as CT or PET-CT for
peritoneal metastases, staging laparoscopy is performed to exclude
small-volume macroscopic peritoneal dissemination or free cancer
cells, and to assess the local resectability of the tumour4–6.
Although staging laparoscopy has been part of diagnostic workup
for patients with gastric cancer for over a decade, guidelines differ on
patient selection and criteria of those at risk of peritoneal
dissemination. Several guidelines limit its use to cT3/T4 tumours
or gastric cancer with a high nodal burden (see supplementary
material S3). In contrast, the National Institute for Health and Care
Excellence (NICE) guideline recommends performing staging
laparoscopy in all patients with gastric cancer7. Interestingly, all
guidelines lack recommendations on how to perform staging
laparoscopy, likely due to the significant variation in technical
performance, which complicates comparison of procedure-based
outcomes8. This inconsistency poses challenges when evaluating
rates of peritoneal dissemination, limits the ability to understand
the diagnostic accuracy of staging laparoscopy, and may lead to
stage migration9. Standardizing staging laparoscopy would result
in a more systematic execution of this diagnostic test, potentially
leading to standardized staging and better patient selection, while
improving data collection on clinical staging. It would facilitate
international studies on gastric cancer staging and treatment of
peritoneal metastases.
A Delphi study could drive standardization, as it provides a
method to systematically achieve expert consensus, without
overpowering opinions of dominant participants10. This approach
is particularly appropriate for the present situation given the high
heterogeneity in used techniques, largely influenced by individual
surgeons’ preferences8. Therefore, the authors performed a
modified Delphi study to examine the extent of practice variation
of staging laparoscopy amongst European gastric cancer surgeons,
aiming to establish a standardized protocol
Quantum-Enhanced Software-Defined Networking: A Communication Perspective
Future 6G networks must handle ever-increasing demands for low-latency, high-throughput, and complex multiservice requirements. In this paper, we propose a hybrid quantum-classical approach that combines Software-Defined Networking (SDN) with the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) to tackle routing optimization. By modeling routing as a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem and leveraging a gate-based quantum computer, our framework demonstrates the feasibility of using variational quantum methods for network tasks. We implement proof-of-concept scenarios in IBM Qiskit, outlining how a microservices-based SDN controller can incorporate a quantum solver for route calculation. Results highlight that QAOA can identify low-latency paths and accommodate flow constraints, pointing to the significant future promise of quantum SDN solutions as quantum hardware evolves. We also discuss the potential for distributed quantum controllers, deployment considerations, and strategies to mitigate noise in current NISQ devices. Our findings lay foundations for deeper exploration into quantum-based network optimization under practical 6G conditions

A novel, Low-cost Leaf Sensor Node Prototype for near Real Time Evapotranspiration Estimation
Water management is becoming increasingly challenging due to the high demands for agricultural yield and the impacts of climate change, leading to resource scarcity and rising production costs. Beside, the development of Decision Support Systems (DSS) allows for the optimal usage of water resources, favouring best agricultural practices while avoiding wasting. To this end, one of the key parameters to be monitored is evapotranspiration (ET), since it reflects the local climatic and environmental factors in the surrounding of the maintained crop area as well as in different positions of the same field. Based on these premises, this work aims to propose a novel, low-cost, and low-power wireless sensor node customized for ET estimation, to be placed in fields or orchards for the sensing of the environmental conditions a leaf can perceive. It overcomes the limitations of a previous prototypes in that: i) it computes ET directly on-board, ii) it integrates a custom 3D-printed enclosure designed for simultaneous sensors and PCB housing, iii) it adopts a modular design strategy allowing for system expandability via external and optional sensors while ensuring low power functionalities, consuming at most 0.369 J for a 300 s cycle
