Bridging silos or adding friction? The data work behind re-identification across interoperable data infrastructures

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the technopolitics of identification across interoperable systems, with a particular focus on the identification of third-country nationals. In doing so, it reveals the data work required to establish and strengthen interoperability across systems. In the ongoing debate concerning interoperability's potential to bridge siloed organisations and their systems, the article focuses on iterative identification processes that make use of governmental interoperable infrastructures. Central to this investigation are the data matching practices and technologies employed at various stages of bureaucratic identification processes, including residency and naturalisation, extending beyond the initial identification of individuals at the border. The article introduces the concept of ‘re-identification' to characterise iterative processes that third-country nationals must undergo at different points in space and time. The analysis draws on data collected at the government immigration agency in the Netherlands and at the agency's data matching software supplier. We analyse how data matching technologies address ‘data frictions’ usually associated with interoperability. We argue that their utilisation in curbing data friction may entail new organisational costs. The findings show that data matching necessitates additional data work for effective re-identification, including formulating search queries, interpreting ambiguous results, and reconciling records across organisations and time

Currency domains. A reflection on multiplicity and the money of people’s experience

    No full text
Jane Guyer’s primary focus in exploring money was on the“money of people’s experience.” Indeed, money is one of the most important things in people’s everyday lives, having economic, cultural, and political values, that reveal much about the communities and societies that use it. Money is handled, saved, imagined, desired, created, and recreated by the people who employ it. Thus, money matters beyond the macroeconomic context in which it circulates. For Jane Guyer, studying how people use money is a necessary starting point for reconfiguring an understand- ing of money around the concerns of anthropology and history. Through a brief exploration of the money of people’s experience, I revisit Jane’s critical contributions to the anthropology and history of money in Africa, one of her many areas of expertise

Comparison of carcass and meat quality traits of fast-, medium - and slow-growing chicken genotypes fed diets with different protein-to-energy ratio

This study was conducted as part of a comprehensive project focused on the evaluation of novel slow-growing chicken genotypes as one of the several policies of the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) that many companies have recently signed up. The main scope of this trial was to evaluate carcass cut yields and meat quality traits in chickens belonging to three genotypes differing in growth rate and fed either a control or low-protein diet. For this aim, a total of 1,800 one-d-old male chickens belonging to fast- (FG, Ross 308), medium- (MG, Ranger Gold) and slow-growing (SG, Gray Kabir Naked Neck) genotypes were housed in an environmentally controlled poultry facility and randomly allotted in 36 concrete floor pens (6 m2; 50 birds/pen), in compliance with BCC requirements. The birds received, throughout the trial, a multi-phase basal diet with two lysine-to-metabolizable energy ratios (CON: commercial standard; LOW: -10% lysine but the same metabolizable energy compared to CON). All birds were slaughtered in a commercial abattoir at the same body weight (~2.8 kg), which was reached at different ages (FG=34d, MG=50d, SG=77d). Fifteen carcasses per group were randomly selected and used to assess cut yields (breast, thighs, drumsticks, wings and back) and quality traits of breast meat (pHu, colour, cooking losses, shear force, TBARS and carbonyls). A two-way ANOVA was performed including genotype (FG, MG and SG), diet (CON and LOW) and their interaction in the model. As expected, total yield of high-value cuts (breast, legs and wings) was impaired in both SG and MG carcasses when compared with FG group (74.3 and 76.2 vs. 79.4%, P<0.001) basically as a consequence of dramatic decrease of breast percentage (29.9 vs. 35.9 vs. 39.6%, P<0.001). As for the dietary treatment, only FG and MG birds exhibited lower (P<0.001) percentage of breast meat when fed LOW diet, while SG chickens were unaffected. Likewise, meat quality traits strongly differed among genotypes. Breast meat from both MG and SG strains exhibited lower pHu, darker and yellower colour, higher cooking losses and shear force. In addition, SG evidenced higher TBARS values when compared with both MG and FG (0.86 vs. 0.50 and 0.50 mg/kg, P<0.001). Overall, the dietary treatment did not affect meat quality traits. These findings evidenced that the adoption of slow-growing genotypes strongly affects the profitability at slaughter and allows producers to obtain meat with peculiar quality properties (i.e. appearance, texture, etc.).

High-quality assembly of the Chinese white truffle genome and recalibrated divergence time estimate provide insight into the evolutionary dynamics of Tuberaceae

    No full text
The genus Tuber (family: Tuberaceae) includes the most economically valuable ectomycorrhizal (ECM), truffle-forming fungi. Previous genomic analyses revealed that massive transposable element (TE) proliferation represents a convergent genomic feature of ECM fungi, including Tuberaceae. Repetitive sequences constitute a principal driver of genome evolution, shaping its architecture and regulatory networks. In this context, Tuberaceae can become an important model system to study their genomic impact; however, the family lacks high-quality assemblies. Here, we investigate the interplay between TEs and Tuberaceae genome evolution by producing a highly contiguous assembly for the endangered Chinese white truffle Tuber panzhihuanense, along with a recalibrated timeline for Tuberaceae diversification and comprehensive comparative genomic analyses. We find that, concurrently with a Paleogene diversification of the family, pre-existing Chromoviridae-related Gypsy clades independently expanded in different truffle lineages, leading to increased genome size and high gene-family turnover rates, but without resulting in highly rearranged genomes. Additionally, we uncover a significant enrichment of ECM-induced gene families stemming from ancestral duplication events. Finally, we explore the repetitive structure of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) loci for the first time in the clade. Most of the 45S rDNA paralogs are undergoing concerted evolution, although an isolated divergent locus raises concerns about potential issues for metabarcoding and biodiversity assessments. Our study establishes a fundamental genomic resource for future research on truffle genomics and showcases a clear example of how establishment and self-perpetuating expansion of heterochromatin can drive massive genome size variation owing to activity of selfish genetic elements

The article examines Constitutional Court judgment n. 10/2025, which declared inadmissible the abrogative referendum on Law n. 86/2024 concerning differentiated regional autonomy. Following its earlier decision n. 192/2024, the Court held that a popular vote could not be called due to the lack of clarity of the referendum question, notwithstanding the order issued to that effect by the Central Office for the Referendum of the Court of Cassation

L’Hélène de Sappho : un paradigme sexué ?

    No full text
Situating Sappho fr. 16 N. and Alcaeus fr. 42 and 283 V. in a historical and anthropological framework with a focus on gender issues suggests that the two poets’ conflicting views of Helen derive from the political and social position of their audiences and not only from the gender differences between them. On the other hand, the tool of gender reveals also the fluidity of erotic attitudes in these poems

Oneirism, Alternative Realities, And Covid-19 Pandemic in Murakami Haruki’s The City and Its Uncertain Walls (2024)

Murakami Haruki’s literary production can be associated with oneirism from different perspectives. The liminal boundary that in authorial works divides ‘his world’ (kocchi no sekai) from the ‘other world’ (acchi no sekai) constitutes the focus of a narrative between truth and fiction, facts and dreamlike visions. This impairment in reality testing can thus be interpreted as a multifaceted psychotic disorder, in which the delusions, hallucinations and mnestic dysfunctions to which the protagonists are subjected find manifestation in the “double world” that characterizes the authorial production, undoubtedly influenced by magic realism. It is the identity crisis of the contemporary era, in which the mind is tormented by the freneticism of daily life, social pressures and the present insecurity. Murakami’s most recent novel, The City and Its Uncertain Walls (2024), indulges in the author’ s most common literary tropes by adding to the psychological distress of the protagonists the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic that saw the genesis of the work. The novel explores the sense of loss, regret, and social withdrawal provoked by urban barriers in the claustrophobic context that compels the search for a dreamscape in which to take refuge. Through an interdisciplinary approach that brings into dialogue literary criticism and an interest in psychopathological sequelae related to the fluidity of the present and the social anxiety that permeates the contemporaneity, this paper aims to explore how Murakami’s alternative realities are manifestations of hallucinatory psychosis reflective of social turmoil and political chaos, a split, if not an actual dissociative disorder of the individual unable to integrate into the society of which he or she is a part
