A nonstabilizerness monotone from stabilizerness asymmetry
We introduce a nonstabilizerness monotone which we name basis-minimised stabilizerness asymmetry (BMSA). It is based on the notion of -asymmetry, a measure of how much a certain state deviates from being symmetric with respect to a symmetry group . For pure states, we show that the BMSA is a strong monotone for magic-state resource theory, while it can be extended to mixed states via the convex roof construction. We discuss its relation with other magic monotones, first showing that the BMSA coincides with the recently introduced basis-minimized measurement entropy, thereby establishing the strong monotonicity of the latter. Next, we provide inequalities between the BMSA and other nonstabilizerness measures such as the robustness of magic, stabilizer extent, stabilizer rank, stabilizer fidelity and stabilizer R\'enyi entropy. We also prove that the stabilizer fidelity, stabilizer R\'enyi entropy and BMSA with index have the same asymptotic scaling with qubit number. Finally, we present numerical methods to compute the BMSA, highlighting its advantages and drawbacks compared to other nonstabilizerness measures in the context of pure many-body quantum states. We also discuss the importance of additivity and strong monotonicity for measures of nonstabilizerness in many-body physics, motivating the search for additional computable nonstabilizerness monotones
Gender-Neutral Language in Non-Professional Translation: A Case Study from American Young Adult Literature.
Literary representations of nonbinary identities for young readers have become a key topic in cultural debates across Western countries. While far-right movements have sought to reinforce gender normativity, some sectors of the publishing industry now promote young adult (YA) books with non-binary protagonists. In Italy, translating such works from English has proven particularly complex, as Italian is a grammatical gender language. This study recognizes the translation of YA queer literature as a crucial means of fostering diversity in education. The paper presents the results of a workshop in which Italian undergraduate translation students translated excerpts from All Boys Aren’t Blue, George M. Johnson’s 2020 queer memoir-manifesto. After outlining the debate on gender-fair language (GFL) and key developments in queer translation studies, the paper discusses the students’ approaches to the translation of GFL, showing that linguistic challenges can be addressed through a combination of traditional and innovative translation strategies
A Bipolar Hybrid Symmetrical Cockcroft-Walton Voltage Multiplier for High-Voltage DC Power Supplies
Voltage multiplier circuits play a crucial role in high-voltage DC power supplies. This paper proposes a bipolar hybrid symmetrical Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier for DC high-voltage applications. It consists in the connection of a positive and negative symmetrical voltage multiplier and a shared diode bridge. The proposed topology combines the advantages of the most common symmetrical voltage multipliers, resulting in a smaller and better-regulated output voltage drop, as well as reduced high-voltage isolation requirements and component count. Additionally, it does not require a center-tapped high-voltage transformer, reducing the system’s complexity. It fills the gap in the general framework of voltage multipliers and their respective bipolar topologies. The feasibility of the system has been numerically validated, and the performance of the proposed topology has been verified
Optimization of Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines Equipped with Turbocompound Technology for Enhanced Performance and Efficiency
Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2ICEs) offer significant potential in reducing the CO2 emissions of the heavy-duty transport sector in the pursuit of the European Green Deal targets. However, the challenges associated with hydrogen energy density require advanced technologies for fuel efficiency enhancement. Hybrid powertrains, equipped with innovative energy recovery systems, allow optimizing the engine working point while recovering otherwise wasted energy. In particular, Turbocompound (TCo) systems allow recovering the energy content in the exhaust gases, improving the overall efficiency of the powertrain. Optimizing both engine operation and TCo recovery presents a significant challenge, as it requires balancing the dynamic interaction between the engine's combustion process and TCo (which increases backpressure). This paper presents a novel approach aimed at optimizing the performance of a hybrid hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine by integrating a TCo system. The TCo allows extracting a 9 kW extra power peak with respect to the baseline configuration. The performance assessment of the optimized working point for series hybrid powertrains underscores the capability of the strategy to reduce hydrogen consumption up to 6.8%

The Role of Public History Within and Outside the United States: Critical Reflections
This article outlines the historical roots, disciplinary evolution, and contemporary significance of Public History, framing the thematic focus of this issue of USAbroad – Journal of American History and Politics. Emerging in the United States and Britain during the 1970s, Public History sought to extend historical practice beyond academia and to make the production of historical knowledge more democratic and socially engaged. Drawing on the legacies of social history and history from below, it has since developed into a global field encompassing museums, archives, media and digital platforms.
The article situates the field within current debates about the public uses of the past, the politics of memory, and the blurred boundaries between scholarly research and popular history. It also highlights the uneven international development of Public History, with particular reference to its late institutionalization in Italy and the growing network of global practitioners. Finally, it introduces the essays gathered in this issue, which examine the circulation, adaptation, and redefinition of Public History across the Americas and Europe. Collectively, the contributions reveal how the discipline continues to negotiate its dual identity – as a scholarly method and as a civic practice – and to reshape the relationship between historical research, public discourse and democratic participation
THE IDENTITY-FORMATIVE FUNCTION OF RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS IN THE RUSSO-UKRAINIAN CONFLICT
The role of religious and para-religious symbols in shaping collective identities within contemporary conflicts, with particular reference to the Russo-Ukrainian war. Through a historical and cultural analysis, it highlights how Orthodoxy—revived with force after the dissolution of the USSR—has become a central element of the Russian political model and a tool for legitimizing power and military action. In the context of war, confessional, patriotic, and secularized symbols acquire propagandistic and motivational functions, reinforcing the “us versus them” dichotomy. From the “Z” marking on Russian tanks to militarized icons such as “St. Javelin,” symbolism becomes an identity-building and justificatory weapon, losing its original pacifying vocation in a broader transformation of the sacred into an instrument of conflict and division
Studies of hadronic showers in SND@LHC
The SND@LHC experiment was built for observing neutrinos arising from LHC pp collisions. The detector consists of two sections: a target instrumented with SciFi modules and a hadronic calorimeter/muon detector. Energetic νN collisions in the target produce hadronic showers. Reconstruction of the shower total energy requires an estimate of the fractions deposited in both the target and the calorimeter. In order to calibrate the SND@LHC response, a replica of the detector was exposed to hadron beams with 100 to 300 GeV in the CERN SPS H8 test beam line in Summer 2023. This report describes the methods developed to tag the presence of a shower, to locate the shower origin in the target, and to combine the target SciFi and the calorimeter signals so to measure the shower total energy
Spazio latente della rappresentazione e rappresentazione dello spazio nell’epoca dell’èkphrasis artificiale
Il contributo indaga il concetto di Spazio Latente (LS) come struttura semantica e matematica alla base delle tecnologie di intelligenza artificiale generativa, in particolare nei Large Multimodal Models (LMM). In una prospettiva genealogica, il LS emerge non solo come astrazione computazionale, ma come forma di rappresentazione della conoscenza, capace di tradurre dati tra diverse sostanze espressive (testo, immagine, audio, video, 3D). La tesi sostenuta è che il Disegno, e più in generale la rappresentazione dello spazio, siano oggi forme di traduzione intersemiotica artificiale, analoghe ai processi di èkphrasis operati dagli LMM. L’articolazione del LS nei modelli generativi – autoencoder, VAE, GAN, modelli di diffusione, Transformer – mostra come le immagini artificiali non siano semplici artefatti visivi, ma proiezioni geometriche e semantiche di dati in spazi matematici multidimensionali. La ricerca mostra inoltre come la rappresentazione latente dello spazio consenta nuove modalità di trasformazione e sintesi visiva: dalla segmentazione e reinterpretazione di opere pittoriche, alla loro ricostruzione in modelli 3D e immersivi, utilizzando tecnologie come Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), Gaussian splatting e algoritmi di stima della profondità. In questo scenario, il concetto tradizionale di immagine si espande no a includere strutture latenti di significato, ridefinendo il ruolo del disegno e della rappresentazione nello studio della visione umana e artificiale
