    No full text

Beyond the Museum: Virtual and Physical Replicas of Pompeii’s Siege Marks

    Get PDF
This study investigates the potential of reality-based 3D digital modeling, acquired for scientific purposes, to enhance the understanding and accessibility of ballistic imprints on Pompeii’s city walls. These impact marks, attributed to the Sullan siege of 89 BC, were caused by projectiles launched by Roman elastic torsion weapons. High-resolution models were acquired through integrated 3D survey techniques to create both virtual and physical replicas. These assets enhance museum accessibility, offering interactive digital content and tactile 3D-printed replicas for visually impaired and mobility-restricted visitors. The findings highlight the role of digital heritage in archaeological research, conservation, and public engagement, bridging the gap between academic study and inclusive cultural dissemination

Aims: Knee stiffness is common condition after high energy trauma, surgeries, leading to severe functional limitation in normal daily activities. Purpose is reporting clinical outcomes and detect complications at mean follow-up of 10 years after modified Judet quadriceplasty. Methods: Retrospective observational single center study was conducted, evaluating a 19 patients sample affected by post traumatic knee stiffness who underwent modified Judet quadricepsplasty from January 2008 to June 2023. Procedures were performed by same expert surgical team, patients followed same perioperative protocol. Patients were clinically evaluated using Judet criteria for final range of motion and five score (KOOS, WOMAC, Tegner-Lysholm, HSS KS, EQ-5D). Demographic characteristic, clinical history, pre intra and post operative knee flexion and possible complications by computerized medical records were detected. Results: Average definitive flexion was 100.7° (range 35°-140°) and flexion gain was 50.4° (range 5–100°). According to Judet's criteria, the result obtained by 10 patients could be classified as excellent (52.6%), 7 as good (36.8%), 1 as fair (5.3%) and at last in 1 as poor (5.3%). An extension lag was observed in 47% of cases, with 8.8° average value (range 2–20°); only 10.5% showed significant deficit (greater than 10°). There were four cases that required new arthromyolysis, four cases of perioperative complications and two long-term complications, mostly due to infection. Conclusion: Modified Judet quadricepsplasty is effective in improving knee function and mobility in patients with post-traumatic stiffness, resulting in a less aggressive invasive technique. Despite some risks, especially in severe cases, it remains a valuable surgical option when conservative treatments fail. Level of evidence: Level IV retrospective case series

Holistic multi-tracer assessment of stock structure for common sole (Solea solea) in the Mediterranean Sea

    No full text
The identification of biological population structure is vital for sustainable marine resource management. Misalignment between man- agement units and actual fish populations can result in ineffective regulations, impacting the sustainability of exploited species. The common sole, Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758), a commercially important demersal flatfish in the Mediterranean Sea, has been previously studied, but gaps remain in understanding its spatial structure within a pan-Mediterranean context. This study employed a multi-tracer holistic approach, integrating genomic and otolith data across various spatio-temporal scales using semi-quantitative methods and integrative multi-variate analysis. This holistic approach revealed the existence of at least three distinct regional stocks within the Mediterranean, highlighting a complex spatial population structure. The Stock Differentiation Index indicated a strong spatial structure, with multi-variate analysis showing consistent and complementary results across different tracers. The integration of these tracers supports the identification of distinct management units, offering a valuable uptake of the resulted information to the management strategies of common sole. Furthermore, this study advocates for the regular application of the holistic approach in the stock assess- ment of other fishery resources, underscoring its potential to enhance sustainable exploitation of marine resources across various species

Two years of precision livestock management: harnessing ear tag device behavioral data for pregnancy detection in free-range dairy cattle on silage/hay-mix ration

    No full text
Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the transformative potential of precision livestock farming (PLF) in dairy production, nutrition, and reproductive efficiency by implementing proactive management strategies that utilize real-time data. Methods: Data were gathered from a commercial dairy farm, employing a 3D accelerometer system attached to ear-tags to monitor activity and rumination behavior. Additionally, information on animal-related events such as oestrus, artificial insemination, clinical diseases, and treatments was recorded. Results: It was observed that there were differences in rumination between positive and negative cows in the days following artificial insemination (AI). Specifically, from day 0 to day 16, negative cows exhibited a higher rumination time compared to positive cows, with this contrast being particularly significant on days 9 and 10. Over the duration of the study, cows that tested negative produced, on average, 0.78 kg more milk per day. Discussion: This suggests that animals with higher milk production were less likely to be pregnant, potentially due to increased nutrient allocation to the mammary gland, resulting in a more pronounced negative energy balance and consequently lower conception rates. Furthermore, the accelerometer utilized in this study was capable of distinguishing differences in daily lying time between pregnant and non-pregnant animals on the days of oestrus return. This finding highlights the potential for developing a system alert to identify “probable pregnant” and “probable non-pregnant” animals

    No full text
This article explores the relationships between the melodramatic imaginary and readers’ curiosity in the predecessors to 19th century detective novels. While melodrama facilitates the readability of narrative functions, the reworking of its repertoire reflects the development, in stages, of a new way of writing and reading about fictional investigation: the reader’s engagement in the search for clues. Through the theatrical topos of disguise in the form of a false beard, the text starts by analysing the relationship between the criminals in Mémoires (1828-1830) by Vidocq and the beard of the melodramatic “mysterious stranger” character, behind which lies the hero. It goes on to present the antithetical relationships between drama and investigation in the legal novels of Émile Gaboriau (1865-1869). Finally, the text presents the reappearance and proliferation of the beard in Le Mystère de la chambre jaune (1907), as a device to incite readers to search for clues and also to throw them off track.L’article s’interroge sur les rapports entre l’imaginaire mélodramatique et la curiosité du lectorat chez les prédécesseurs du roman policier au xixe siècle.

Modelling policy coordination and ecological transition policy

    No full text
Ecological transition calls for ecological structural change requiring smart and coordinated macroeconomic policies, and this article proposes macroeconomic modelling to provide a baseline analytical framework to tackle this issue. We can define “ecological policies” as all macroeconomic policies aimed at enhancing green productivity by increasing green sectors’ share and green productivity in all sectors, as well as by changing the components of aggregate demand according to green instances. Ecological policy coordination entails integrating traditional monetary and fiscal policies with typical industrial policies. This paper introduces an Eco 3-equation model, showing ecological macroeconomic policies’ positive role in promoting win-win strategies concerning environmental and social sustainability by examining a case study pertaining to energy inflation. This phenomenon is particularly relevant due to recent inflation caused by the hike in energy prices generated by the Ukraine war, which can potentially influence the economy adversely, involving complex monetary and fiscal policy responses

    No full text
Small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) has emerged in the past two decades as the cornerstone for assessing small bowel disorders, and its use is supported by several guidelines. However, there are several limitations, such as the considerable time required for gastroenterologists to review these videos and reach a diagnosis. To address these limitations, researchers have explored the integration of artificial intelligence in the interpretation of these videos. In our review, we explore the evolving and emerging role of artificial intelligence in SBCE and examine the latest advancements and ongoing studies in these areas, aiming at overcoming current limitations

    No full text

The ‘First Forty Years’ of the Buildings of Worship Fund: Origins, Open Questions, and Prospects in the Scholarly Debate. The essay critically reconstructs and analyzes the main legal issues addressed in the scholarly literature regarding the establishment and subsequent developments of the Buildings of Worship Fund (Fondo Edifici di Culto), ranging from the Fund’s pactional origins to the structure of its bodies, from the challenges in identifying the various types of assets that make up its patrimony to the difficulties associated with their management. All of this is considered in light of the special nature of many of these assets, which are of significant cultural interest and, often being used for worship, require cooperation with the Catholic Church. The academic literature has also suggested possible future developments aimed at improving the preservation and enhancement of this important national heritage
