Monitoring Wet Snow With a Multiband Dual-Receiver Radar System
No full textThe seasonal snowpack holds a fundamental significance for hydrological, climatic, and safety considerations in mountainous regions. A deep and accurate understanding of its dynamics is needed to evaluate the quantity of available freshwater and to create avalanche risk reports. Despite the traditional manual analysis still being the standard method, technological instruments, particularly those employing microwave frequencies, have been used lately for snowpack monitoring purposes. However, these approaches exhibit some limitations and may lead to ambiguous results unless supplemented with additional sources of information or more sophisticated techniques. This article introduces a recent development in snowpack monitoring utilizing a dual-receiver microwave radar system. The instrument, previously validated for dry snow conditions, demonstrates high precision in retrieving both the depth and dielectric properties of a snowpack. A preliminary attempt to monitor wet snow has been made in the past, investigating the presence of water. In this work, a more systematic analysis of real data has been conducted by implementing a multiband configuration and exploiting different kinds of wetness conditions. The tests carried out on wet snow are compared to manual analysis outcomes. Furthermore, this new configuration has been used to efficiently monitor the melting-freeze cycle over both daily and seasonal periods. The results reported in this article highlight the instrument's capability to provide accurate data in diverse snow conditions, thanks to its multiband feature, offering a promising way for enhanced snowpack research and monitoring practices
Boundary Estimates for Doubly Nonlinear Parabolic Equations

in the super-critical fast diffusion regime 0 < p− 1 < q < N(p − 1)/(N − p)_+. We show that when solutions vanish continuously at the Lipschitz boundary of a parabolic cylinder Ω_T , they satisfy proper Carleson estimates. Assuming further regularity for the boundary of the domain Ω_T , we obtain a power-like decay at the boundary and a boundary Harnack inequality
Impact of retirement transition on health, well-being and health behaviours: critical insights from an overview of reviews
No full textRetirement is a pivotal life course transition wich may have profound implications for health, well-being and health behaviours. Despite extensive research and theoretical debate, the impact of retirement on health remains inconclusive, with studies reporting positive, negative, or no effects. This overview of reviews synthesises evidence from 15 systematic reviews (4 meta-analyses) assessing the relationship between retirement and physical and mental health outcomes (including mortality, mental health, cognitive decline and cardiovascular diseases) and health behaviours (including physical activity, diet, smoking and alcohol consumption). The review adheres to PRIOR guidelines and assesses the quality of the literature and existing methodological challenges. Findings indicate that retirement's impact varies widely depending on socioeconomic status (SES), job characteristics, and individual lifestyle factors. Retirees with higher SES generally experience improved mental health and increased physical activity, whereas those with lower SES are more prone to declines in physical and mental health, increased sedentary behaviour, and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Evidence on cognitive decline and mortality remains mixed. This review highlights critical methodological issues in the available literature, including inconsistent definitions of retirement, reliance on self-reported health data, and biases like reverse causality and healthy worker effect. Future research should prioritise life course longitudinal designs and cross-country comparisons informed by stronger theoretical grounding to untangle the complex relationship between retirement and health. Policy efforts should target vulnerable groups, particularly those from lower SES, by promoting physical activity, mental well-being, and social engagement during and after the transition to retirement. Tailored interventions across retirement transition could mitigate health disparities and improve overall well-being in later life

No full textSpace–time Isogeometric Analysis of cardiac electrophysiology
No full textThis work proposes a stabilized space–time method for the monodomain equation coupled with the Rogers–McCulloch ionic model, which is widely used to simulate electrophysiological wave propagation in the cardiac tissue. By extending the Spline Upwind method and exploiting low-rank matrix approximations, as well as preconditioned solvers, we achieve both significant computational efficiency and accuracy. In particular, we develop a formulation that is both simple and highly effective, designed to minimize spurious oscillations and ensuring computational efficiency. We rigorously validate the method's performance through a series of numerical experiments, showing its robustness and reliability in diverse scenarios

Malaysia 2024: Trials and Trajectories of Anwar Ibrahim's Political Leadership
No full textThis paper presents an analysis of how debates around reform in Malaysia unfolded in 2024, focusing on Prime Minister Anwar Ibarhim’s efforts to align the government’s trajectory with his political vision, grounded on Islamic values. Domestically, the unity governmen faced mounting pressure to implement a reform agenda that had underpinned its rise to power in 2022. At the same time, it navigated a polarized public debate, seeking to balance Malay dominance with the multiple demands coming from the different sections of society. In this context, Anwar’s emphasis on positive diversity, aiming to quell the periodic emergence of social disparity as a key issue in public discourse, both obscured and reinforced frictions over the dynamics of marginalization and racialization in the country. On the international stage, the Anwar administration continued to rely on the Prime Minister’s identity as a Muslim democrat to pursue a foreign policy that balances regional and global strategic priorities. This approach aimed to secure Malaysia’s diplomatic and economic interests within an increasingly unstable international environment
