Promotions and productivity: the role of meritocracy and pay progression in the public sector
We study promotion incentives in the public sector. In collaboration with Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health, we introduce exogenous variation in the meritocratic nature of promotions from health worker to supervisor positions and in health workers' perceptions of pay progression upon promotion. Ten months later, our findings reveal that meritocracy leads to a 22 percent increase in health workers' productivity. Greater perceived pay progression in a meritocratic system boosts productivity by 23 percent, whereas in a less meritocratic system, it decreases productivity by 27 percent. We show that this reduction is consistent with a negative morale effect. (JEL C93, H51, I11, J24, J31, M51, O15
Organizational reactions to expert and consumer evaluations in haute cuisine
In the world of haute cuisine, intermediaries have the power to make or break the fate of restaurants. Through a multimethod analysis, this research explores how these businesses react to online reviews as well as the introduction of new rankings (in this case, the Michelin Guide). The results show that restaurants’ responses are strategic, often more symbolic than substantive, aimed at meeting public expectations without compromising long-term goals. The studies reveal how status generates relevant reputational pressures, and how organizational reactions are influenced by the visibility, tone, and content of the reviews in question
Informing DSGE models through dynamic factor models
Structural dynamic factor models (SDFM) represent a reliable tool to inform the construction of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models. The reason is that the log-linear solution of a DSGE model has a factor structure which ensures consistency between the representations of the two models. We assess the usefulness of SDFM for DSGE analysis by means of simulations. Using a standard DSGE model as the data generating process, we show that the factor model always provides accurate estimates of the impulse response functions. As an application, we reassess the literature studying the response of hours to technology shock. An additional application studies the effects of monetary polic
Overlap gap and computational thresholds in the square wave perceptron
Square Wave Perceptrons (SWPs) form a class of neural network models with oscillating activation function that exhibit intriguing ``hardness'' properties in the high-dimensional limit at a fixed constraint density α=O(1). In this work, we examine two key aspects of these models. The first is related to the so-called \emph{overlap-gap property}, that is a disconnectivity feature of the geometry of the solution space of combinatorial optimization problems proven to cause the failure of a large family of solvers, and conjectured to be a symptom of algorithmic hardness. We identify, both in the storage and in the teacher-student settings, the emergence of an overlap gap at a threshold αOGP(δ), which can be made arbitrarily small by suitably increasing the frequency of oscillations 1/δ of the activation. This suggests that in this small-δ regime, typical instances of the problem are hard to solve even for small values of α. Second, in the teacher-student setup, we show that the recovery threshold of the planted signal for message-passing algorithms can be made arbitrarily large by reducing δ. These properties make SWPs both a challenging benchmark for algorithms and an interesting candidate for cryptographic applications
