ssessment of the best theories of collaboration for conducting academic-industry collaborations in the pharmaceutical industry.
Research question: What are the best theories of collaboration for conducting academic-industry collaborations in the pharmaceutical industry? This thesis assesses the best theories of collaboration necessary to conduct academicindustry collaborations in the pharmaceutical industry. It involved conducting interviews for both, academic and industry professionals, which provided deep and impactful insights about how each side of the collaboration operates and works in union with one another to achieve targets and accomplish project goals. In order to better understand the best theories of collaboration, it was necessary to include the history of what academic-industry collaborations are and the key challenges involved in academic-industry collaborations in the pharmaceutical industry and in other industries. Theories of collaboration were further explored, including how their themes have been applied earlier in academic-industry collaborations in other industries, but focuses particularly on those that functioned in the pharmaceutical industry. The professionals included academic chairs, senior academic professors and researchers, as well as industry professionals. The approach to gathering information was based on a narrative analysis approach, which was framed on the basis of gathering the stories and experiences of the participants in this dissertation study and was interpreted on those grounds. A total of 4 professionals from the academic side and 4 from the industry side were interviewed, wherein their experiences and stories from their career progression in academic-industry collaborations in the pharmaceutical industry was analysed and coded for determining whether the selected theories had impactful contributions for resolving the challenges identified. The findings, including the importance of themes being used in combinations and the prevalence of some themes over others in resolving certain challenges fell in line with the literature review conducted and has supplemented the research objectives and the established research question. The professionals explained what their best collaborations were, the greatest challenges they faced, their history of being involved in academic-industry collaborations and the quantity and quality of their work experience, which enabled them to conduct such collaborations. The theories included in the literature review were applied to the in-depth interview findings, and there was a strong link found between the theories of collaboration and the most successful collaborations conducted by the interviewed professionals. This is an area that still requires a lot more research to understand as to how academia and industry need to collaborate, how should the conduct and mindset of those involved in such collaborations be, and what exactly are the best theories of collaboration for conducting such collaborations
Crisis Management: A Study of Climate Change and The Possibility of Reducing its Impact on the Economy Using Sustainable Finance.
Climate change has been recognized as one of the biggest challenges of current times and has become a topic of considerable study and debate. It is predicted to have irreversible impacts on the ecosystem; however, climate change should also be considered a potential threat to the world economy if not properly and effectively addressed. This research attempted to contextualize climate change as not only a corporate social responsibility concern, but mostly as a crisis management issue, as well as to identify sustainable finance as a part of climate solution. The study is divided in two. Firstly, a survey was delivered to the public to assess climate change awareness and perception around the world. Secondly, a case study was conducted to analyse how Australian and French financial institutions are conducting and addressing climate change-related risks, as well as to analyse how the governments’ actions can influence those businesses. The governance of private and public institutions should be accountable to incorporate the environment into decision-making; stakeholders are responsible to ensure that initiatives are implemented
Public Policy Issues in International Commercial Arbitration. A Comparative Analysis Between Ireland, Singapore, India and the United States of America
In this dissertation, it was proven that there are issues that exist in international commercial arbitration under the ground of public policy which may be used to set aside or refuse enforcement of an arbitral award. Throughout analysing the differences of contracting States to either the UNCITRAL Model Law or the New York Convention it has been demonstrated that discrepancies between national and international legislation on the public policy ground can be detrimental to the independence of the arbitral tribunal and finality of the arbitral award. As Conventions aimed to harmonise and provide a uniform text that can be applied to both national and international Legislation on arbitration, the public policy ground remains subjective and inconsistent in areas such as the threshold and scope applied. It is clear that court intervention is disadvantageous to arbitration and the need for limitations is evident. Used as a means to allow court involvement in Countries with a weaker judicial system with regards to arbitration, public policy is used excessively to set aside or refuse enforcement of an arbitral award and in some cases decide on the merits. It will be shown that to successfully apply the New York Convention and the Model Law to arbitration, the grounds of public policy and arbitrability should be narrowly construed in accordance with the aim to harmonise and unify international commercial arbitration. By deviating from this aim, this dissertation demonstrated the issues that arise from this by way of broad interpretations and uncertain outcomes of awards
An Analysis of Factors Influencing Environmental Behaviours in Irelands’ Biopharmaceutical Industry Employees
This study analyses the factors influencing environmental behaviours in Irelands’ biopharmaceutical industry employees utilising secondary research and qualitative primary research methods. The secondary research undertaken indicates that several factors positively impact environmental behaviours including convenience and belonging to a group with positive environmental intentions i.e. peer influence. Within an industry setting, a combination of factors is evident. This includes individual factors e.g. beliefs and environmental awareness, group factors e.g. feedback and financial incentive, organisational factors e.g. culture and management support and external factors e.g. actions at home and legislation. The primary research carried out with employees of 10 biopharmaceutical companies in Ireland shows that several individual, group, organisational and external factors impact the behaviours of employees, thereby reflecting the secondary research findings. The data shows that to optimise efforts a combination of these factors is required. However, company culture, infrastructure and regulation were found to be the most influential factors. Company culture improvements must move from a profit driven mindset, to improve environmental behaviour through voluntary corporate social responsibility. Research suggests a culture shift is a long-term change. In the short to medium term regulation and infrastructure changes are advised. Introducing requirements to align with positive environmental action through regulation drives companies to ensure compliance, as not doing so can affect release of product and lead to financial cost. Both infrastructure and regulation serve to make the positive environmental choice the most obvious. The presence of environmental infrastructure makes the choice easy resulting in employee cooperation. This research indicates that current efforts within the biopharmaceutical industry to ensure optimal environmental impact is moderate. Therefore, further work is required in this area to improve the effort of both the individual and the company and to lessen the environmental impact going forward. The findings of this study may be used within the biopharmaceutical and similar industries to analyse, promote and improve current efforts of ensuring positive environmental behaviour
Understanding how Undergraduate Students Engage with Career Development Education.
The purpose of this paper is to understand how undergraduate students engage with career development. The Smarter World, Smarter Work Campaign, initiated by IBEC in 2018, was used as a framework to underpin the foundation of this research - to what extent do students understand the importance of career development education and how it relates to their own personal career journey? This report highlights the importance of career management throughout the life cycle of a person’s career. This study takes the current literature that exists and adds to the conversation using primary research conducted with final year undergraduate students and lecturers delivering career development. Based on the research questions proposed and the purpose of the study the following three strands were used as the focus for the research: 1. How students engage with career development? 2. At what stage do students begin to connect the classroom learning with their own career development? 3. Can student engagement be enhanced with the use of specific learning theories in the delivery of career development? A mixed methods approach was used to gather data. A student survey (quantitative) and semi-structured interviews with lecturers (qualitative) were conducted. Surveys were chosen as they can be used to gather data to understand peoples’ interests and beliefs (Rea and Parker 2014). Semi-structured interviews were chosen as they increase the comprehensiveness of the data collected and allow gaps to be identified and closed (Patton 1980, p. 206). The author identified a gap where students entered third level with the view to gaining employment post-graduation but did not always engage with career development or see the benefit in engaging with it. Both the literature and the primary research pointed to institutions holding an assumption that the student had already made a decision on their career path before starting their third level journey when many had not. The study makes a number of recommendations to Higher Education to bridge the gap between the move from second to third level and how best to guide undergraduate students in their career development and give them the tools to manage their career journey throughout its’ life cycle
An Exploration of the Role of Social Media Marketing For Irish Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The objective of this study was to explore the role of social media marketing on Irish SMEs by assessing the benefits and challenges of social media adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was informed by the need to carry out an empirical analysis on the current state of social media usage amongst SMEs in Ireland, by discovering how well they used social media for business promotions and awareness, especially during the COVID-19 Era. Social media has become an essential tool in 21st-century marketing (Andzulis, Panagopoulos and Rapp, 2012). Due to its flexibility, ease of usage and ability to reach a wide range of individuals the tool has been adopted by a variety of industries. Reports have revealed that the adoption rate of social media by SMEs in Ireland is gradually on the increase, however, this cannot be compared to that of larger enterprises, this is due to certain challenges and weaknesses peculiar to SMEs (Bosua, Evans and Sawyers, 2013). This study thus tries to investigate the use of social media by SMEs as well as challenges faced by SMEs while adopting social media. The study builds on several pieces of conceptual literature concerning the adoption of social media, social media in crises and adoption of social media in Ireland. Furthermore, the study adopted the qualitative methodology which collects data from the conduct of semi-structured interviews. Five (5) interviews were conducted amongst SMEs owners in Ireland and analysis was made using the thematic process. Amongst the findings of the research, was that social media has been effectively utilised by SMEs in Ireland especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it aided communication, engagement and interaction with customers, it also enhanced business awareness further increasing the number of customers. The research discovered that the use of social media by SMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly revolutionised the way business is carried out and subsequently increased sales and profits. The challenges faced by SMEs in social media adoption was prevalent due to existing government regulations on the use of social media for sales of some products during the COVID-19 era and also lack of usage of social media by older populations which limited the extent to which businesses could connect to older clients. The research thus recommends the effective use of social media by businesses especially through constant content creation and posting as social media is the 21st-century vogue of doing business
What Contributed to Sinn Féin’s surge in popularity during the 2020 general election campaign in Ireland?
The campaign leading up to the general election on 8 February 2020 in Ireland was eventful and its result unanticipated. Ireland’s usual bipartisan voting trend was broken with the Sinn Féin party winning the most first preference votes for the first time since August 1923. Throughout the twentieth century, the Sinn Féin party mostly lay dormant. It began its continuous contesting of elections in 1987. However, ten years later in the last general election of the twentieth century, Sinn Féin’s support had only risen to 2.5%. Since then, the party has slowly gone from strength to strength with its percentage of first-preference votes breaking the threshold of double digits in February 2016 with 13.85%. This thesis examines the potential reasons for the leap of over 10% in first preference votes in the space of one general election seen by Sinn Féin. It looks at the social media tactics of the party in comparison to those (or lack thereof) of the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil parties. It examines the messaging of these three parties with reference to each party’s manifesto. Since the economic crash of 2008, Ireland has seen itself in the grips of health and housing crises. The effects of this on the Irish electorate will also be explored with reference to the strong front bench of the Sinn Féin party
Global Alcohol Marketing and Corporate Social Responsibility: Creating an Impactful Brand Image for Public Health in Ireland.
In this study, it was shown that corporate social responsibility (CSR) advertisements conducted by alcohol brands can create an impactful brand image for public health in Ireland. Heavy drinking and binge-drinking rates are high in Ireland, and a significant group of people argue that alcohol advertising campaigns heavily influence binge-drinking culture in Ireland. In this research, it was aimed to measure and examine the impact of CSR marketing initiatives of alcohol brands among consumers in Ireland about drinking responsibly. The importance and benefits of the relationship between CSR initiatives and alcohol marketing in the matter of public health were explored. It was concluded that public-health themed CSR campaigns can create a positive perception towards the brand in the majority of the people in Ireland. The research was taken from a post-positivist point of view. The subjectivity of human behaviour and perceptions were analysed with an objective and hypotheticaldeductive perspective using a quantitative method. Quantitative results were explored with a survey based on the research objective and conceptual framework. The survey was conducted with a snowball sampling method with 112 participants, which was distributed via social media in April 2020. The findings show that people in Ireland who have seen CSR advertisements are more likely to agree with the fact that an effective public-health themed CSR advertising can increase loyalty to the brand in Ireland. It can be interpreted that alcohol brands have the potential to create an impactful brand image with public-health themed CSR advertisements. Based on the research results, it was discovered that CSR marketing might provide an opportunity to raise awareness of harmful drinking in Ireland and to maintain the brand’s reputation. There is a substantial amount of evidence, which shows that alcohol brands should apply certain strategies to create awareness of harmful drinking in Ireland and enhance the overall brand image. These outcomes might be beneficial for Irish and global alcohol brands in deciding what actions and strategies should be taken when developing CSR strategies to create an impactful brand image
An Operational Framework Using Information Systems to Mitigate Risks and Improve Decision Making in the Manufacturing Industry.
In this study, an Operational Framework for the Manufacturing Industry was shown, which condensates key information and allows supply chain professionals to have a broader perspective on all the elements that compose Supply Chain Operations, as well as the risks within those operations, and a generic Decision-Making approach which can be applied to any of the Drivers of Supply Chain defined in this research study. This research also found that IS contributes to Supply Chain Operations by enabling the processes to flow in harmony and it was pointed out that they are significant in order to improve communication in an organisation, as well as to be able to identify possible disruptions in the Supply Chain Processes to eventually support supply chain professionals making decisions to mitigate potential risks. It has also been shown that the possibilities of risks in supply chain processes are very broad and are connected to various areas of the company. The research methodology for this study was of a qualitative nature. The data was collected using semi-structured interviews. Thus, a technique of data display and analysis was implemented to interpret the study's primary outcome. The main objectives for this research were to develop a clear understanding of how IS can aid in better decision making to support manufacturing companies improving Supply Chain Operations flow; to Identify the drivers in the Supply Chain that support Supply Chain professionals to make decisions; to provide a clear visual relationship between the drivers of supply chain, taking into account the supply chain processes for risk prevention and decision making; and to eventually develop a framework that can support risk mitigation and decision making in the Supply Chain Processes
An Exploratory Study on how Modern Supply Chain can Thrive on Elastic Logistic.
This study focuses on Elastic Logistics, an emerging concept in supply chain and potential driver of supply chain in coming times. It also focuses on major technologies that support and form a potential perfect model for Elastic Logistics. The everyday logistics operations are defined by reciprocity of supply and demand. There are lot of uncertainties and disruptions experienced by logistics industry. Logistics organizations are transforming their operations to be flexible to plan the service capacity and tackle the changes in demand. With Amazon setting trend for same day delivery or next day delivery, the expectations of consumers have been increased from retailers and e-commerce companies. Rise in freight cost due to current pandemic situation, extreme weather conditions, climate change, delivering on time to avoid shortage and achieve cost savings are the challenges that need to be tackled by logistics industry. The solution for logistics companies is being flexible, and expanding/contracting according to demand, i.e., Elastic Logistics. Elastic logistics concept includes outsourcing of logistics services, enabling automation in industries, digitalization, integration of various departments of organization and partners on a single platform and implementation of Transportation Management Services (TMS). More organizations will take help from third-party logistics (3PL) providers and utilize their fleet, IT capabilities and networking. This will enable companies to concentrate on their core competency, and deliver products and services on time, while doing cost savings at the same time. This study puts forward the concept of Elastic logistics, its drivers, its benefits and how it can be potential solution for supply chain uncertainties in coming time
