    Search for a standard model-like Higgs boson in the mass range between 70 and 110 GeV in the diphoton final state in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

    The results of a search for a standard model-like Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range between 70 and 110 GeV are presented. The analysis uses the data set collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 36.3fb−1, 41.5fb−1 and 54.4fb−1 during the 2016, 2017, and 2018 LHC running periods, respectively. No significant excess over the background expectation is observed and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for decays of an additional Higgs boson into two photons. The maximum deviation with respect to the background is seen for a mass hypothesis of 95.4 GeV with a local (global) significance of 2.9 (1.3) standard deviations.     Reweighting simulated events using machine-learning techniques in the CMS experiment

    Data analyses in particle physics rely on an accurate simulation of particle collisions and a detailed simulation of detector effects to extract physics knowledge from the recorded data. Event generators together with a geant-based simulation of the detectors are used to produce large samples of simulated events for analysis by the LHC experiments. These simulations come at a high computational cost, where the detector simulation and reconstruction algorithms have the largest CPU demands. This article describes how machine-learning (ML) techniques are used to reweight simulated samples obtained with a given set of parameters to samples with different parameters or samples obtained from entirely different simulation programs. The ML reweighting method avoids the need for simulating the detector response multiple times by incorporating the relevant information in a single sample through event weights. Results are presented for reweighting to model variations and higher-order calculations in simulated top quark pair production at the LHC. This ML-based reweighting is an important element of the future computing model of the CMS experiment and will facilitate precision measurements at the High-Luminosity LHC

    Observation of WZγ production and constraints on new physics scenarios ffiffi in proton-proton collisions at ps = 13 TeV

    A measurement of the WZγ triboson production cross section is presented. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of ps 1⁄4 13 TeV recorded with the ffiffi CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The analysis focuses on the final state with three charged leptons, l±νlþl−, where l 1⁄4 e or μ, accompanied by an additional photon. The observed (expected) significance of the WZγ signal is 5.4 (3.8) standard deviations. The cross section is measured in a fiducial region, where events with an l originating from a tau lepton decay are excluded, to be 5.48 ± 1.11 fb, which is compatible with the prediction of 3.69 ± 0.24 fb at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. Exclusion limits are set on anomalous quartic gauge couplings and on the production cross sections of massive axionlike particles

    This paper examines the evolution of financial and accounting autonomy granted to Italian public universities, analyzing the progressive erosion of institutional self-governance in favor of central-ized ministerial control. The analysis begins by contrasting the original framework of Law n. 168/1989, which provided universities with extensive regulatory power, against the subsequent reforms. Driven by the per-ceived need for rationalization of public spending, legislation starting in the 1990s and culminating in Law n. 240/2010 systematically transferred regulatory authority from individual universities to ministerial decrees

    GWAS meta-analysis identifies five susceptibility loci for endometrial cancer

    Background: Endometrial cancer is the most common gynaecological cancer in high-income countries. In addition to environmental risk factors, genetic predisposition contributes towards endometrial cancer development but is still incompletely defined. Methods: Building on genome-wide association studies (GWASs) by the Endometrial Cancer Association Consortium, we conducted a GWAS meta-analysis of 17,278 endometrial cancer cases and 289,180 controls, incorporating biobank samples from the UK, Finland, Estonia and Japan. Findings: GWAS analysis identified five additional risk loci (3p25.2, 3q25.2, 6q22.31, 12q21.2, and 17q24.2). Corresponding gene-based analyses supported findings for three of the five loci, at NAV3 (12q21.2), PPARG (3p25.2), and BPTF (17q24.2), as well as two additional candidate risk regions at ATF7IP2 (16p13.2-p13.13) and RPP21 (6p22.1). Validation genotyping in further independent case-control series replicated the most significant locus at 12q21.2 and corroborated risk variants located intronic to NAV3, the gene for Neuron Navigator 3. Downregulation of NAV3 in endometrial cell lines accelerated cell division and wound healing capacity whereas NAV3 overexpression reduced cell survival and increased cell death, indicating that NAV3 acts as a tumour suppressor in endometrial cells. Interpretation: Our large study extends the number of genome-wide significant risk loci identified for endometrial carcinoma by about one-third and proposes a role of NAV3 as a tumour suppressor in this common cancer.
