    Education model for future

    Get PDF
The modern work environment requires many new abilities. Hence, there are often called 21st-century skills. It can be caused to the increasingly common use of digital tools or by more and more individualization (fitting) occurring in all aspects of life. These skills are not only subject-matter skills but auxiliary such as time planning, flexibility, ability to contact and discuss with others, social skills, etc. These skills are often called "hard" and "soft" skills. Many professions introduce these skills to help employees adjust to future changes. All industries had to follow changing world, mainly from an economic point of view. Banking, manufacturing, tourism, hotel industry, and sometimes administration, medicine, and healthcare focus on customization. Doing work quicker and more flexibly in all these areas is essential. Unfortunately, education is one of the arenas more resistant to these changes. There are "traditional" exam forms, "traditional" lecture forms, etc. The pandemic has introduced changes, but now there is a great willingness (from teachers, administration, and some students) to return to the previous situation. University is an old institution. There was a time when the university was used to individual development. There were units – students studied chosen subject in their own time and developed themself in the desired direction (Humboldt University model). Most important was feeling like part of science society. After this, the following model – the French university, shows that students should learnto be a valuable element of the state. Students' feelings were not significant. Students can be treated as the "labor force". They learn to fulfill state expectations. What university model is desired now? What university model is practical enough to give work knowledge and prepare for new challenges? Are some pedagogical theories better matched to unknown current and future abilities? What is essential for students, and what is vital to the state? In this paper, we would like to discuss some of the possibilities of different university models and different pedagogical theories with a focus on flexibility and further self-development of students.publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Abstract Relevant literature emphasizes the importance of personal autonomy and users' right to participate in their own lives. As a social worker in local drug addiction services, one finds oneself in situations where one must assess capacity to consent. In such situations, it can be challenging to manage the balance between the user's right to decide over their own life and the mandate one has as a social worker to intervene in the situation. Although the assessment of capacity to consent has been in the media lately, there is little information on how social workers should concretely assess capacity to consent in practice. Therefore, will this project investigate how social workers in local drug addiction services experience working with the assessment of capacity to consent. The purpose of the research was to focus on the challenges that social workers encounter in the work of assessing capacity to consent. The study is an exploratory qualitative interview study in which we used in-depth interviews to gain insight into the informants' subjective experiences. The data material was obtained from three informants in different municipalities. The findings indicate that the informants feel they must assess capacity to consent continuously and anew in different situations. Nevertheless, we see that social workers often experience the assessment of capacity to consent as demanding because there may be uncertainty about whose responsibility it is to assess capacity to consent in different situations. All informants expressed that they feel that users often become too ill before they receive help because it may take too long before capacity to consent is assessed. The project concludes that social workers experience working with the assessment of capacity to consent as highly challenging. On one side, the professional ethical foundation document should be a tool for social workers in ethically challenging situations, but on the other side, it is evident that social workers lack clear guidelines on how to assess capacity to consent in different situations

Extramural English and students’ motivation. A Mixed Methods Study on Norwegian Students’ Motivation and Attitude Toward English Classroom Practice

    Get PDF
Abstract This masters thesis investigates if there is a relationship between Norwegian students extramural English activities and students' motivation and attitudes towards English classroom practice. The study uses a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative data from questionnaires with qualitative insights gathered through focus groups. The choice of method will make it possible to answer my thesis’ research question which is: To what extend extramural English corresponds to students’ motivation and attitude toward English classroom practice. The choice of participants was two schools in rural part of Norway, where the quantitative phase involved administering questionnaires to late primary and lower secondary school students, gathering data on their extramural English activities and levels of motivation. The qualitative phase consisted of two focus groups from lower secondary school, allowing for in-depth exploration of their experiences and perspectives that affects their motivation in learning English. The research findings reveal several main findings where a significant proportion of Norwegian students dedicate more than half of their time spent on digital platforms by exposing themselves voluntarily to English-related activities. The other main finding was that listening and speaking emerged as the most frequently utilized language skills during these extramural activities. Additionally, a positive correlation was discovered between the frequency of extramural English engagement and students' motivation levels within the classroom context. These results underscore the importance of recognizing extramural English activities as an important factor when it comes to students’ language learning. By acknowledging and building upon students' existing extramural language practices, teachers can enhance classroom engagement and foster a more motivated learning environment. These findings contribute valuable insights for English teachers seeking to optimize English language classroom instruction and better align classroom practices with students' preferences and motivations

    Get PDF
The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine how and why mathematics teachers use talk and dialogue in their teaching of mathematics. In The National Curriculum of 2020 (Læreplanen for Kunnskapsløftet 2020), the use of dialogue and discussion in mathematics is explicitly promoted, and the aim of this study is therefore to create more awareness concerning the use of math talk in the teaching of mathematics among both student teachers and teachers. The study is based on previous research on dialogue and communication in the teaching of mathematics, teacher interventions and the teacher's role in mathematical conversations. In addition, the study also relies on The Sociocultural Learning Theory, where learning occurs through participation and dialogue. The study has a qualitative research design, and the research methods used is nonparticipatory observation and semi-structured interviews. Together, these research methods will answer the following thesis statement: How do teachers facilitate mathematical dialogue in the teaching of mathematics in primary and lower secondary school and which reasons do teachers have for using dialogue in their teaching? The collection of data has been carried out at four different schools, where I have observed and interviewed five teachers of mathematics in Years 5-10. The interviews were conducted after the observations and will therefore serve as the primary source in my research project. In my study, the results show several interesting findings to help answer my thesis statement. It turns out that the teachers' planning and the development of a safe classroom environment influences the quality of the mathematical conversation. The teachers used various talk moves, different forms of communication that included the pupils in the conversations, and conversations that took place in both whole-class and in pairs and smaller groups. The teachers' reasonings for using mathematical dialogue in teaching were mainly concerned about allowing the students to engage in their own learning process, using talk as a tool to both uncover and address misconceptions, as well as guidelines from The National Curriculum of 2020

Decision Transparency for enhanced human-machine collaboration for autonomous ships

    Get PDF
Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) are quickly emerging as a gamechanging technology in various parts of the world. They can be used for a wide range of applications, including cargo transportation, oceanographic research and military operations. One of the main challenges associated with MASS is the need to build trust and confidence in the systems among end-users. While the use of AI and algorithms can lead to more efficient and effective decision-making, humans are often reticent to rely on systems that they do not fully understand. The lack of transparency and interpretability makes it very difficult for the human operator to know when an intervention is appropriate. This is why it is crucial that the decision-making process of MASS is transparent and easily interpretable for human operators and supervisors. In the emerging field of eXplainable AI (XAI), various techniques are developed and designed to help explain the predictions and decisions made by the AI system. How useful these techniques are in a real-world MASS operation is, however, currently an open question. This calls for research with a holistic approach that takes into account not only the technical aspects of MASS, but also the human factors that are involved in their operation. To address this challenge, this study employs a simulator-based approach were navigators test a mock-up system in a full mission navigation simulator. Enhanced decision support was presented on an Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS) together with information of the approaching ships as AIS (Automatic Identification System) symbols. The decision support provided by the system was a suggested sailing route with waypoints to either make a manoeuvre to avoid collision, or to maintain course and speed according to the Convention of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG). After completing the scenarios, the navigators were asked about the system’s trustworthiness and interpretability. Further, we explored the needs for transparency and explainability. In addition, the navigators gave suggestions on how to improve the decision support based on the mentioned traits. The findings from the assessment can be used to develop a strategic plan for AI decision transparency. Such a plan would help building trust in MASS systems and improve human-machine collaboration in the maritime industry.publishedVersio

Arbeidstiltak for unge voksne med psykiske lidelser som står utenfor arbeidslivet. En teoretisk undersøkelse

    Get PDF
Abstract This thesis examinates in which degree different labour market measures succeeds in getting unemployed young adults with psychological disorders into work. To get a better understanding of this, we have examined what conditions are important for the measures to succeed, to what extent the measures promote empowerment, and if not, to what extent the users end up being marginalized. We also look at alternative, empowering measures that can increase work participation: A third sector in the labour market and an educational program. This is important knowledge since increased work participation is important both for society and for the individual. Empowerment is also one of the aims for social work, and another aim for social work is helping people to avoid being marginalized. This thesis is theoretical, and we have used theories about empowerment and marginalisation, as well as research on to which extent different labour market measures succeeds in getting users into work, and what conditions that are important for the measures to succeed. We have found that a little less than one third of the users on work-training and ordinary education gets into work after the measure is finished, while with Individual Placement and Support (IPS) four out of ten gets into work. With educational measures, the success of finishing the degree and getting into work varies significantly depending on the educational program, with work-training it’s important with a good match between the user and the workplace, and IPS seems to have best results for the more challenged users. It’s possible to argue that all the measures promote empowerment to a certain extent, but there’s also a limitation to how empowering the measures are, and most of the users end up being marginalized. A third sector in the labour market for those outside the private and public sector, as well as educational programs that can increase the users’ qualifications, might contribute to increase the work participation. The purpose with presenting a third sector is that we need to see how the labour market can be changed to include those who today are getting excluded. Educational programs that increase qualifications for the group we are focusing on, is probably just as important as measures focusing more on work, since this group has a significantly lower level of education than their peers, and a large amount of the jobs today requires education

Nynorskrettskriving. Bokmål- og talemålspåverknad i eit utval ungdomsskuleelevar si formelle skriving

    Get PDF
Abstract The aim of this master’s thesis is to research to what degree, and in what ways Bokmål, dialect/spoken language and dialect-like writing in social media affects the spelling of a selection of pupils. The study is divided into three parts, including one questionnaire survey, some donated chat excerpts, and an analysis of pupil texts. The data consists of a total of 18 answers on the questionnaire, seven collected chat excerpts, and 17 pupil texts. The participants in this research study are 9th- and 10th-graders from a school in Sogndal municipality. The study consists of a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, with the primary focus being on the quantitative aspect. Through the questionnaire survey, the pupils answered questions mainly with closed response options, related to their own language practices. A text-analysis of the donated chat excerpts was then conducted. Additionally, through the analysis of the pupil texts, deviations from the norms of Nynorsk were identified and categorized into different deviation categories. The deviations were then classified based on their correspondence with Bokmål, dialect/spoken language, both Bokmål and dialect/spoken language, or neither. The results from the research study shows that 45% of the registered deviations in the pupil texts correspond with (only) dialect/spoken language, 24% correspond with both Bokmål and dialect/spoken language, while 13% of the deviations correspond with (only) Bokmål. The results of the research study therefore indicates that pupils who grow up in the Nynorsk-area of Western Norway, are influenced by dialectal forms that they use when they speak and write on social media, and by Bokmål, the dominating writing-language on the national level, when they write formal texts in Nynorsk

    Get PDF
Abstract The purpose of this master's thesis is to develop insight and knowledge about how a teacher in Norwegian as a second language facilitate the use of the students' multilingualism as a resource in teaching. A tendency in research from Norwegian classrooms shows that there is a consistently insufficient focus on using students' multilingual resources in teaching and educational contexts (Svendsen et al., 2020, p. 262). In fact, the Norwegian education system has received an increased number of pupils with a different mother tongue than Norwegian and will acquire the Norwegian language as an instrument for further learning and development. Therefore, there is an increasing need for teachers to develop knowledge about multilingualism and second language learning. This study has a qualitative research design. There have been used a combination of observation and semi-structured interviews of two teachers who work in a linguistically heterogeneous and a linguistically homogenous introductory class. The data material consists of observation notes from a total of two weeks of observation, and transcribed interviews of the teachers in the respective classes. There are two multilingual assistants who are employed in both classes, so that the collaboration on multilingual adaptation in the classroom also constitutes the data material. Overall, the study shows that very different practices exist in one school, especially when it comes to mapping, the use of multilingual teaching strategies and the involvement of multilingual assistants in teaching. My findings point in the direction that the pupils' opportunities to use their multilingualism as a resource in teaching Norwegian as a second language largely depend on the individual teacher. The results show that the use of the pupils' multilingualism as a resource mainly occurs spontaneously in teaching. A more conscious planning of the use of several languages in teaching crystallizes as a requirement for working more systematically with developing the pupils' Norwegian skills, and at the same time ensure that all pupils get equal opportunities for development and learning. Knowledge about the pupils' linguistic background and a teacher who has a resource-oriented view of multilingualism has proven to be important factors in this work

Ungdom i sorg – «å møte folk med hjertet». En kvalitativ studie om hvordan sosialarbeideren i skolen kan ivareta ungdom i sorg

    Get PDF
This study focuses on how social workers in schools can support young people experiencing grief. Grief is a natural part of life that can affect individuals to a greater or lesser extent. It can be particularly challenging for young people, who are already going through a difficult developmental period. Adolescents may face pressure and stress in many contexts, which is why it is important to have someone to talk to. The theoretical framework of the study is based on theories of relational work, the concept of coping, and networking. In addition, we have conducted a review of research in the field that sheds light on interdisciplinary collaboration in schools and young people´s different grief reactions. We chose to conduct an empirical study through qualitative exploratory in-depth interviews with three informants who have social work educational background, and experience. All informants are employed as environmental workers at a youth or high school. We based the selection on getting as much relevant information as possible about how to support young people. In the analysis of the data material, we drew inspiration from the SDI model. The findings and discussion indicate that with the right knowledge and resources when working with young people experiencing grief, it can contribute to their well-being. The results suggest that there are many ways to support young people. One of the most important aspects of this work is finding a balance between talking about grief and focusing on positive aspects of life in the present
