    No full text
Abstract The purpose of this master’s thesis has been to take a closer look at how literature can contribute to develop the students’ life skills. Life skills is a new term in the curriculum after the curriculum reform in 2020. The term is a part of the core element public health and life skills. The school is an arena where the students come to learn new things, but also to develop as a social participant in society. Literature is a big part of the Norwegian subject and has great potential. With this as a background, through this master’s thesis I wish to take a closer look at how the textbook Norsk 5 is using literature to contribute to develop the students’ life skills. This study is looking closer at the question: «In what way does the textbook Norsk 5 facilitate the development of life skills through literature?» In this master’s thesis I have conducted a qualitative document analysis of the Norsk 5 textbook and the associated teacher’s guidance. The data material has been used to answer the question the study has been based on. The study finds that the textbook provides for using literature both explicit and implicit in developing life skills. In particular, the textbook focuses on literature that portrays emotion, communication, and interpersonal relationships. In addition, the students meet factual texts and multiple texts that are dealing with the same topic, where the aim is for the students to practice encountering texts critically. The textbook also emphasize the importance of working with specific tasks when reading a text. In connection with developing life skills, Norsk 5 wants the students to connect their own experiences to the texts, in addition to reflect and collaborate through role-playing, discussion and dialogue. In summary, the students are developing their life skills in various ways through literature

Abstract The goal of this study is to examine how English teachers in year 5-10 perceive, use, and relate to intelligent writing software. The use of intelligent writing software and the way we write is rapidly changing. At the same time intelligent writing software is constantly being improved and further impacts how we write. Because of this it is important to understand how teachers handle intelligent writing software and perceive it. The goal of the study is to investigate how it is being used in Norway and create a point for further research into the topic. My research question is therefore: “What relation do English teachers in 5-10th grade have to intelligent writing software, and how do they facilitate for students’ digital writing skills in English?” In the study I have performed four qualitative interviews with four English teachers who work in 5-10th grade. The data consists of four transcriptions of these four interviews which have been phenomenologically analyzed and discussed to investigate my research question. The study finds that the teachers have a general positive attitude towards the use of intelligent writing software. The teachers interviewed are focused on developing their own digital skills and improving their use of the intelligent writing software available to them. At the same time there seems to be less awareness of the features allowed in the classroom and their potential English didactical implications. Furthermore, the teachers believe that many of the pupils use the features of intelligent writing software without considering their effect. This results in a perceived confusion in the pupils or a lessened learning outcome. The study finds that the teachers perceive lack of motivation in the pupils to use intelligent writing software to further their own learning as a central part of the issue

Study Program Leaders’ Perceptions of Coherence and Strategies for Creating Coherent Teacher Education Programs

Scholars and policymakers have consistently argued for the importance of coherence in teacher education (TE). Despite this attention to coherence, challenges of fragmentation and disconnect remain, and little research exists on how study program leaders (SPLs) in TE work to achieve coherence. This article explores how SPLs in two selected TE institutions in Norway perceive coherence and what strategies they use to create coherent TE programs. The two case studies use an ethnographic approach and report on repeated qualitative interviews with seven SPLs, supported by short-term observations over a period of one academic year. The analysis contributes to the small but emergent literature on how SPLs conceptualize coherence and identifies six strategies that SPLs use to navigate persistent barriers within a diverse and autonomous faculty in their ongoing efforts to strengthen coherence in TE programs. Implications for study program leadership in TE are discussed.publishedVersio

Det forebyggende arbeidet På Mortensrud. En kvalitativ intervjustudie

    Get PDF
Abstract Mortensrud has been in the news a lot in recent years due to events such as vandalism, shootings, homicides, and gang activity among young people. As a result, there is a growing effort to develop a safer local community with good school facilities, meeting places, recreational activities, and many low-threshold offerings. Four informants working on preventive measures against youth marginalization have been interviewed. They work in the district of Søndre Nordstrand, primary and secondary schools, “Innsats Mortensrud” and “Mortensrud fellesskap”. The collected data has been analyzed through a stepwise-deductive inductive method (SDI-model), where data is worked through to theory, but not used as structured. The main purpose of this task is to shed light on the preventive work in Mortensrud, investigate the measures taken, and their impact on preventive work at different levels. Early intervention is important in outreach work. A strong connection and a healthy relation between marginalized youth and the local social workers could possibly replace the lack of support and stimulation that they get from home. This will further help the youth to get off the “streets”. Social workers actively use network theory as a tool to achieve social control over young people through control theory. This involves working with early intervention at a universal and selective level, where having a close relationship with social workers can replace the support and encouragement that young people may lack at home and help them avoid negative environments. A significant part of this work is to develop young people's networks to be positive and supportive. Early intervention can help prevent potential costs to society and the development of problems, especially if resources are prioritized for voluntary work. Further research should focus on the importance of mobilization and early intervention in preventing crime and social exclusion

Medelevrespons i responsgrupper. Ein pedagogisk designstudie av responsgrupper på ungdomstrinnet

    Get PDF
Abstract This master’s thesis explores peer response in peer response groups as a part of a writing process in the subject Norwegian. The purpose of the thesis is to examine what possibilities and challenges the teacher faces while working with peer response in peer response groups. To examine the topic the study builds on qualitative research method and design-based research (Bjørndal, 2013). In design-based research the researcher develops a teaching plan based on theory about the topic they examine. Thereafter the participants (teacher and pupils) try out the teaching plan while the researcher observes the situation. In the end the researcher and the participants reflect over the teaching situation. In this study I have developed a teaching plan with peer response groups which a teacher and her class with mixed ages have tested. After the teaching situation I have conducted interviews with the teacher and three of the pupils. The material in this study is field notes and voice records from observations, voice records from interviews with a teacher and three pupils and pupil’s reflection notes. The findings shows that there are many possibilities and challenges while working with peer response in peer response groups. The challenges are mainly about pupils’ lack of and varying response competence. It is therefore important that pupils get explicit teaching to know how they can give good peer response, and it is important to work with it systematically for a long time. If the teacher spends time on it and gives the pupils good tools, it will have positive effects in the long term. This has to do with the possible possibilities in peer response groups such as cooperative learning through observation and dialog, learning scientific concepts and establishment of social and professional communities

    No full text
In this study, I examine the experiences middle school (ages 10-13) teachers of Norwegian have, when they work with conversation to improve shy children`s oral skills. Shy children`s behaviour rarely poses a problem for the environment, but the behaviour can create challenges and problems for those who express it. The school`s and society`s demands on oral communication makes it difficult for these pupils to develop both academically and socially. Teachers of Norwegian have a responsibility to ensure that all students achieve oral skills. With this as a starting point, this issue was examined: How can conversations that are used for learning in the Norwegian subject improve the oral skills of shy pupils in middle school? In order to answer this question, a qualitative approach has been used, with interviews as the method. Four semi-structured interviews were conducted with four teachers of Norwegian, all of whom had experiences with shy pupils and all of whom work in middle school at different schools. After the data was collected, it was interpreted, coded and analysed using an abductive analysis process. The study indicates that using conversation as a tool to include shy pupils is seen as positive, as conversation as a form of learning can ensure that pupils achieve competence within the Norwegian subject in addition to competence within communication. Findings from this study shows that class dynamics and teachers' views on learning outcomes, influence the type of conversational form the teachers use. In order to include shy pupils in conversations within the Norwegian subject, elements such as modelling, routines, variation and expectations were mentioned, indicating that the teachers' work is complex and challenging. Having academic level expectations for the pupils oral skills is emphasised as important, even though the interviews reveal that some of the teachers do not have these expectations. The teachers are uncertain about how much they can expect from the shy pupils due to the fact that they do not know what causes the shy children to express their behaviour. This shows that more knowledge is needed about these pupils, so that the teacher can succeed in the work of including them in oral activities. Conversations that are used for learning, can, if they are used right, provide a basis for shy pupils to achieve competence in communicating knowledge and interacting with others, and for them to understand their own and others´ thoughts and ideas about the world

#Youngart and future skills – research report

    Get PDF
#Youngart & Future Skills research project had two main foci. One was to develop and investigate models for collaboration between the art and education sectors, and the second to inquire whether the art programs and teacher/artist collaboration promotes the future skills of Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Communication. Two art programs were carried out in Norwegian secondary schools in 2022 and 2023. Art program A was developed by a theater company in collaboration with a teacher and four artists in a large secondary school class with 45 students in Trondheim. Art program B was developed by a filmmaker in collaboration with a teacher in a small secondary school class with 18 students in Sunnmøre. One of the aims of #Youngart & Future Skills was to investigate how different class and school sizes functioned in different art programs. The art programs were documented through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and the students feedback on post-it notes and drawings, and the material was analysed by the research team. The research finds that of the four future skills Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking, the first three were strengthened through the art program, and Critical thinking to some extent. The collaboration between classroom teachers and teaching artist was appreciated by both parties. At the same time, there seems to be potential in a closer collaboration and a clarification of roles in relation to the implementation of the art program. It is important that both parties can use their expertise in the implementation, and that the school’s needs and the teaching artists goals and proficiency meet in a good way. There is a need for more research to explore and make choices in relation to the diversity of possibilities in scope, length, timetable, and forms of collaboration between teachers and artists

    Get PDF
Engasjement for demokratiet blir tematisert i varierende grad. Her vektla de norske dokumentene denne kompetansen høyest. Abstract This master thesis deals with how democratic preparedness is developed in Norway, England, and the state of Washington in the USA. In order for a democracy to survive, Mikkelsen and others (2011) present five competencies that citizens and society should have. They function as pillars that support democracy in their own way. The study only focuses on four of these. In the study, I conducted an inductive analysis of various educational policy documents, based on the SDI-method. The codes and code groups generated here form the basis for the discussion. The research question is: How do authorities in Norway, England and the state of Washington address the development of democratic preparedness in schools? There are several competencies in democratic preparedness that are extensively addressed across the countries. Knowledge about democracy is emphasized to a large extent in the English documents, as well as the documents from Washington. The Norwegian documents does not emphasize this part as much. The documents from the three countries emphasized forming knowledge about democratic processes and human rights to a large extent. Skills is emphasized to a considerable extent across the countries. Developing source criticism and the ability to think critically were central. It is promoted to be critical of the information one encounters. Attitudes is also a competency that the different countries emphasized to a large extent. Students should form good attitudes towards fellow students. Teaching at school should contribute to not forming group-hostile attitudes towards others. A safe community is also emphasized. Engagement for democracy is emphasized to varying degrees. The Norwegian documents emphasizes this competency to the greatest extent. Norwegian students should be given the opportunity to have an impact on their own everyday lives. The documents from Norway and England suggest using student councils to promote this. The English documents has little emphasis on democratic engagement outside of this, while the documents from Washington emphasizes creating engagement through standing up for one's own and others' rights. Although one can divide the different democratic competencies individually, the task concludes that each competency cannot stand alone. Several of the competencies are linked to each other to a greater or lesser extent. For example, one cannot create democratic engagement without knowledge about democracy. There is a clear connection between the development of democratic preparedness and countering radicalization. An important requirement for this is, among other things, a good discussion community, a safe community at school and the feeling of belonging

Lytting i lærebøker for norskfaget. Ein innhaldsanalyse av oppgåver i lærebokserien Norsk frå Cappelen Damm for 5.-7. trinn

    Get PDF
Abstract Oracy is one of four basic skills in the curriculum for Norwegian as a subject, and listening is an important part of oracy. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine how school textbooks instruct pupils to work with listening, and how this correlates with the listening demands in the curriculum. The textbook is a dominating tool in Norwegian classrooms and will preferably meet the requirements of the curriculum. Examining the tasks in the textbooks gives insight into what can be interpreted as the core of the subject. The research question of this thesis is: How is listening in the curriculum for Norwegian (NOR01-06) operationalized through task texts in the chosen textbooks for Norwegian for 5. to 7. grade? To answer this research question, I have carried out a content analysis – one analysis of the curriculum and one analysis of the textbooks. The curriculum analysis is done by searching for words connected to listening in the chosen part of the curriculum, in addition to an holistic read through of the text. In the textbook analysis the tasks are sorted into different categories of listening. Both analyses are made on the basis of theory and my own reading of the texts. In the curriculum analysis I have partially leaned on listening researcher Hildegunn Otnes, while I’m in the textbook analysis leaning on a model for listening by the Swedish listening researcher Kent Adelmann. The main findings in this study is that the listening role participant, where the listener and the speaker have the same proximity to the spoken word, is dominating in both the curriculum and the textbook tasks. Both analysis shed light on hidden leads on listening, and training listening is emphasized to a small extent in both curriculum and textbooks. Between the three textbooks there is a skewed distribution of tasks related to listening, and the number of listening tasks decreases with increasing year level. This seems to contend with the demands in the curriculum about developing the oracy on all year levels. Besides this it is largely up to the textbook writers to decide the purpose of the listening and what listening act and -mode the tasks shall instruct about, since this to a small degree is visible in the curriculum

Perceived teacher support in secondary education from 1980 to 2019: An integrative review

    Get PDF
How teacher support is perceived in secondary school was a main purpose for examination. As teacher support is a multidimensional construct, we conducted an integrative review to identify and analyze longitudinal and cross-sectional research trends, common practices, and general results in the field of perceived teacher support in secondary education. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a total of 198 articles were analyzed by abstract/methods and 95 by full-text. Our results suggest that teacher support is strongly related to academic motivation, health, and wellbeing but several gaps in the research literature needs attention. Subject topics are rarely reported, except for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and physical education, which make the body of research insensitive for various learning situations and teacher competence. The research is mainly quantitative, addressing the need for more qualitative studies. The teacher perspective is also sparse. The literature has mainly focused on three types of support: social/emotional, autonomy, and academic support. The research in the area has grown steadily since 1980, with a marked increase in publications and research quality since 2009. More research using qualitative and mixed methods and focusing on teachers’ perspectives is needed in addition to more adherence to APA guidelines.publishedVersio
