#Ungkunst og framtidsferdigheter – forskningsrapport
Forskningsprosjektet #Ungkunst & Framtidsferdigheter hadde to hovedfokus.
How pupils’ playfulness creates possibilities for pleasure and learning in physical education
In this study we explore pupils’ embodied experiences in physical education, using empirical findings from a sensory ethnography. The research questions asked are ‘How do pupils’ playfulness create possibilities for pleasure in physical education? And which opportunities for embodied learning are being offered through playful and pleasurable experiences?’ Our aim is to inform and develop pedagogies of embodiment by including playfulness as a strategy for facilitating opportunities for pleasurable and meaningful experiences that enable embodied learning.publishedVersio
Strategisk samarbeid Volda og Ørsta kommunar. Folkehelse i livsløpsperspektiv
Abstract
This task covers various methods used when working with youth living in child welfare institutions. It also explores how culture influences the professional practice of workers and the importance of knowledge and understanding for the quality of their work. The question for our research is: how do social therapists work with youth of minority background in child welfare institutions? This is an empirical study where in-depth interviews have been conducted. The theory used encompasses central methods in institutional work and research on cultural understanding and knowledge related to ethnic minorities. The study shows that practitioners haven`t had much experience with youth of minority background. Based on the knowledge, they have approached everyone in a similar way and adapted to each individual. They have noticed that collaboration is essential when working with families of different ethnic backgrounds, since a lot is unknown and unfamiliar in this arena. Another key finding was that practitioners acknowledge that there is still a lot of knowledge to be gained, and because of this they can perform better work for the youth. We can then conclude that more focus and competency on the topic is a step towards more culturally sensitive work
Updating in the mountains: A sensemaking perspective on ski guiding
For a ski guide, updating on the ever-changing natural conditions and group dynamics is essential to stay safe and provide a good experience for clients. In this paper, we explore how guides update their understanding in the mountains. Our data arise out of a one-season participant ethnography of ski guiding in Norway. The research team had two authors collecting data, one as an “outsider” and another as an “insider”. We find that the work of a ski guide involves a process of monitoring, testing, and projecting. Complementing and challenging the avalanche literature, we find that ski guide decision-making is an embodied updating process rather than a cognitive one that happens at “decision points”. We highlight the implications of these findings both for guides and researchers.publishedVersio
Plant Remains as Sources to Cultural History in Southeast Norway
By way of deploying a newly generated database with radiocarbon dates from southeastern Norway, we show the strength in using aggregated archaeological data. This approach provides us with the ability to look past individual cases and expose general patterns and provide insight that is difficult to attain at site scale. By analyzing 7.168 dates in a summed probability distribution, we infer temporal variation in population size from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. We direct focus towards two important population events: The first is a long-lasting growth phase, beginning in the 5th century BC and lasting until the 5th and 6th centuries AD, likely initiated by technological improvement in agricultural techniques and clearance of new land. The second event is the abrupt decline in the 5thand 6th centuries AD. While we recognize the local and regional differences in responsesto the processes taking place in the 5th and 6th centuries, our data allows us to identify overall patterns, across regions and types of archaeological features and sites. We have identified an inter-regional decrease in the radiocarbon data in the mid-6th century, corresponding in time with two major crises in the AD 530–540s – a double volcanic eruption and an outbreak of the bubonic plague.publishedVersio
Abstract
This master's thesis investigates how programming tasks in mathematics textbooks after the introduction of LK20, take care of 5 central core elements, and implement programming. Part of this process was to further develop two existing frameworks into a new framework for use in the assessment of programming tasks. The topic was chosen on the basis that teachers largely use textbooks in teaching (Mullis et al., 2012). It is therefore important to have an analysis tool that can help teachers and other teaching staff to make good choices when it comes to textbooks.
The study will answer the following question:
"How programming tasks from 3 mathematics textbooks are linked to the core elements and introduction of programming in Kunnskapsløftet 2020?"
To answer the problem, three research questions are used:
• What characterizes the total amount of programming tasks in the study
• What is the difference between the textbooks used in the study
• What is the difference between programming-assignments in mathematics and other mathematics assignments
The textbooks analysed in the study, are: Mathematics 9 (Kongsnes & Wallace, 2020b), Mathematics 9 (Hjardar & Pedersen, 2021a) and Maximum 9 (Tofteberg et al., 2021). The tasks that have been analysed are taken from the chapters on probability. The framework emphasizes the inclusion of core elements and programming in the tasks and uses quantitative content analysis as a method. The analysis is based on how the textbooks presents the tasks, and not how teachers can use the tasks in the classroom or as part of a teaching plan.
The framework can be used to analyse other and new textbooks that have been adapted to LK20, and can also be used to analyse the teachers own tasks and teaching plans, both in terms of the core elements and in terms of programming skills.
Findings from the study show that programming tasks, overall, do not include each core element equally, and that it is the core element modelling and applications that is used the most. There is a relatively large difference in how the textbooks in the study includes the core elements in the programming tasks. Findings have also been made, which show that programming tasks emphasize different core elements than tasks that are not programming tasks. Regarding programming in the assignments, there were also very variable results between the textbooks. It is not possible to conclude whether programming tasks generally underpin competence development or whether the programming tasks train programming skills
Exploring Contextual Stressors and Coping Strategies in Physical Education. A Case Study Approach
The school is an important arena for working with children and young people’s life skills and health (Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training, 2017). Nevertheless, stress at school is considered one of the reasons for the increase in students’ psychological problems (Bakken, 2019). Well-being among Norwegian school students is considered high, but an increasing proportion of students experience significant negative stress during the school day (Bakken, 2021, 2022). Physical education (PE) is one of the largest comprehensive school subjects and a central subject in facilitating students’ life skills and health (Ministry of Education and Research, 2020, (KRO01-05)). Therefore, it is essential to acquire knowledge about how students experience PE and what contributions it can have in this context.
This thesis aims to increase knowledge about and understand how students experience PE in lower secondary schools. Do students get stressed in PE, and if so, what may be everyday contextual stressors? What strategies do students use to handle stressful situations? Further, this thesis discusses what students may learn from challenging experiences and handling stressful situations in PE, and how to reduce students’ negative experiences of stress in PE. The overarching research question guiding this work is: What are the conceptual and contextual perceptions of stressors and coping strategies in physical education?
This thesis presents, operationalizes, and concretizes key concepts and the overall theoretical approach that binds the theoretical contributions and issues in the individual articles together. A literature review of previous research addressing the status of knowledge within the field supports the theoretical framework, identifying a lack of Scandinavian qualitative studies describing students’ perceptions of their stressors and coping strategies in PE.
The study used a qualitative, cumulative, single case study design to answer the research questions, applying multiple qualitative approaches sensitive to exploring and generating rich, in-depth knowledge and a nuanced understanding. An additional supplementary survey was utilized within the case study to add nuance, triangulate, and broaden the picture.
Article 1, titled “Perceptions of Contextual Stressors in Physical Education. A Qualitative Case Study” and published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, explores students’ perceptions of contextual stressors in PE. The article shows that most students experience little or no stress in PE. Nevertheless, a small group of students (mostly girls) do experience significant stress in PE. Depending on the situational context, students experience a multitude of stressors. The article offers insight into the volume and variety of different contextual stressors that students and their teachers perceive in PE.
Article 2, titled “Students’ Perceptions of Visibility in Physical Education” and published in the European Physical Education Review, explores students’ perceptions of visibility in PE. This article sheds light on how students dissimilarly perceive visibility in PE as a stressor or not, depending on the situational context, highlighting the importance of the teacher’s competence, students’ self-perception, and the social environment among the students.
Article 3, titled “Exploring Coping Strategies in Physical Education. A Qualitative Study” and published in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, explores students’ use of coping strategies in PE. The article contributes insight into the variety and volume of students’ ways of coping with stressors in PE. The findings shed light on the importance of understanding how environmental context demands in PE and the stressor in question differently affect individual students’ appraisals of the situation.
Together, these three articles’ findings contribute to increasing knowledge about and a better understanding of how lower secondary school students experience PE in a Norwegian school. The study findings express complexity and nuances that expand and support previous research, adding valuable knowledge of contextual stressors and coping strategies in PE. The framework to explore and understand the students’ perceptions of stressors and coping strategies in this thesis consists of the Cognitive Motivational-Relational Theory of Emotions (CMRT) perspective (Lazarus, 1999; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), existing motivational constructs and definitions, and previous research within the field of PE
