The master's thesis presents the development of the activity "More – less" through pedagogical design research. The activity is developed based on the 2020 curriculum and is aimed at first-grade students in the early stages of mathematics education. The purpose of the activity is to promote the use of embodied learning, collaboration, and multimodality when exploring the concept “More – less”. The research question of the master's thesis is: How can one develop a design that integrates embodied learning, collaboration, and multimodality to enhance first-grade students' experiences with symbolic and non-symbolic representations of numbers? The activity was tested at two different first-grade levels, through three cycles. The overall method is pedagogical design research, and data collection was conducted through video recording, observation, and a teacher interview. Through this research, a local teaching theory was developed based on the analysis of cycles of design, testing, analysis, and reflection. The design principles of the activity focused on embodied learning, collaboration, and multimodality, guiding the development of the design. The master's thesis contributes to understanding how to design a learning activity and has resulted in the design of the learning activity "More – less". The design provides teachers with an activity to use in mathematics education at the first grade, where students work in learning pairs, and through embodied action, collaboration, and the use of various modalities, they gain experiences with the concepts of more and less. By combining these elements, the activity provides students with opportunities for autonomy, creativity, and exploration. By giving learning pairs autonomy to choose quantities and forms of representation, the activity encourages participation and deeper understanding

Title: “An analysis of cognitive demands within tasks in the subject area of algebra, in the 6th and 7th grade, in Campus Inkrement”. This master thesis consists of an analysis of cognitive demands in tasks within the subject of algebra, at the middle school level, from the digital textbook Campus Inkrement. The tasks have also been categorized after the types of responses they require. Algebra is introduced as a separate chapter in the 6th and 7th grades. The tasks are divided into four differentiated learning paths, and the total of 452 tasks were analyzed from both the 6th and 7th grade. Parts of the framework by Charalambous, Delaney, Hsu, and Mesa (2010) were utilized for the analysis. This framework, developed for textbook analyses, uses horizontal and vertical analysis. The horizontal analysis addresses background information and the structure of the textbook, including title, author, publisher, year, number of pages, organization, additional resources, number of pages per topic, topics covered, and their sequence. The vertical analysis comprises three parts: communication to students, required of student, and connections. The main focus of this thesis was on the vertical analysis, and the tasks were analyzed based on the requirements they imposed on students. The Task Analysis Guide by Smith and Stein (1998) was employed to analyze and categorize tasks into low or high level potential cognitive demands. Tasks were categorized based on the type of response they required. Since Campus Inkrement is a fully digital textbook, it was chosen to combine the framework by Charalambous et al. (2010) with the macro-analysis by Gueudet, Pepin, Restrepo, Sabra and Trouche (2016), which they used in their research on electronic textbooks. The analysis revealed that the tasks required fewer higher-level demands from students, then lower-level demands. There were no tasks categorized within the highest cognitive demand; doing mathematics. Most tasks only require "only answers", with a total of 14 tasks requesting a "mathematical statement" or "explanation", and no tasks requesting "justification". With the activities intended to be initiated by the teacher, students can engage with the highest demand only if the teacher is consciously aware of it; based on the task instructions these activities are not categorized as the highest cognitive demand. This highlights the crucial role of the teacher in enabling students to work on high cognitive demanding tasks

For Petroleumstilsynet underbygger funnene i denne undersøkelsen vår første hypotese. The purpose of this study has been to take a closer look at the issue: We have two national supervision bodies which are supposed to work according to the same overall prerequisites, why are there such significant differences between them? The purpose of this issue is based on a Report to the Parliament: St. Meld. nr.17 (St. meld. nr. 17 (2002-2003)) “On State Supervision Authorities”, which places an expectation on the Supervision Bodies, that they must have an approach which is recognizable and that ensures that the industry being audited stays within regulatory requirements. In order to be able to answer this, we developed two research questions: Hypothesis 1: The Petroleum Safety Authority has better framework conditions than the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision and focuses on dialogue and cooperation with the organizations being audited. Hypothesis 2: The Norwegian Board of Health Supervision has worse framework conditions than the Petroleum Safety Authority and focuses on control and punishment in the follow-up of the organizations being audited. The survey was conducted using a qualitative method. We chose to do a case study, with a “most different case” approach. For the Petroleum Safety Authority, the findings in this study support our first hypothesis. We find that this governmental authority, through our study, has the framework conditions they need to carry out their supervisory role. We also find structures and arenas for cooperation with the industry, as well as a culture where cooperation with the industry is important. For the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision, we were of the opinion that we would find different framework conditions and a different culture for the follow-up of organizations being audited. Our findings show that the governmental authority has moved away from our first hypothesis for them and towards the hypothesis we have for the Petroleum Safety Authority. Our findings show that the financial framework for the Board of Health Supervision is smaller than that for the Petroleum Safety Authority, both in total and calculated per employee. At the same time, we interpret our findings in the direction that the Board of Health Supervision also focuses on learning and dialogue to a much greater extent than on finding culprits to be punished. We find a Petroleum Safety Authority that is in line with our hypothesis. However, we do not find a Board of Health Supervision that is in line with our hypothesis, as the focus on learning, development and dialogue is more pronounced than we thought

Summary This master thesis looks at 10-FACTOR as the chosen HR strategy to support organizational development and the role of the leader in implementing this strategy. 10-FACTOR is an employee survey, which through follow-up of the results is intended to lead to organizational development. Several authors point to the challenges of follow-up work after employee surveys, which in turn can lead to a lack of development. Within the field, research has mainly focused on HRM practices and their impact on performance, while there has been little research on the actual implementation of HR practices. The introduction of 10-FACTOR as a development tool can be seen as a change process (KOTTER, 1995) and in the implementation process, a certain translation and adaptation of the tool will be necessary and will take place (Røvik, 2007; Trullen et al., 2020). We have therefore looked at characteristics of the leader that we find relevant for the purpose of implementing the 10-FACTOR; the leader as a change leader and translator (Røvik, 2007). Also, regarding employee surveys in general, and the 10-FACTOR in particular, research and studies have focused on planning and implementation, and less on follow-up of results as a basis for organizational development and the implementation of this. We therefore found it interesting to take a closer look at this through the AMO theory, which within the HRM subject is often used to explain the relationships between competence- (A)bility, motivation- (M)otivation and context-(O)pportunity, and outcomes on performance. In our assignment, we have chosen the theory to increase understanding of what is a good combination of A, M and O both at the individual level, here with the leader, and at the organizational level, which can contribute to effective implementation processes of HR strategies. Also, the characteristics of individual factors are important and some of the factors stand out more than others in our study. This master thesis will thus be able to contribute to new knowledge about factors that influence the leader in taking up HR strategies and thus implementing and routinizing them so that they contribute to development, and provide updated knowledge about which HR practices will be important to increase the likelihood that leaders implement the HR practice in a way that is in line with the intention. The knowledge will be valuable for other municipalities that use the 10-FACTOR as a development tool, and to HR departments that are primarily responsible for developing and implementing HR practices through line managers. We have chosen to conduct the survey in a medium-sized municipality in eastern Norway, which has used 10-FACTOR employee survey since 2017. We have conducted a qualitative survey. First-line managers have been chosen as informants, but from different municipal areas to get a spread on the selection, and to see if there are differences in different leader contexts, while the frames are the same within the overall organizational context. The result of this master study mainly shows that the leader's context is of great importance for the implementation of the HR practice, including especially having a supportive network in the form of leader colleagues. By context here is meant the frameworks the leader has for exercising his or her leadership role. This can be organizationally conditioned, routines and guidelines and span of control (how many they are leaders for) and more. The leader network is one (O) characteristic at the organizational level (A. Bos-Nehles et al., 2023). We see that geographical proximity to this leader network has a positive effect, that is, in the form of having daily proximity and interaction. The informants who were in the same location as leader colleagues seemed to have the most well-functioning leader network, characterized by development orientation, motivation and good communication flow. In the cases where this was observed, the leader also had a reflective and relationship-oriented leadership style, and the perception of having a good balance between time for administration and leadership - in the form of time for follow-up of the individual employee. Training also appears to be of significant importance. In particular, knowledge has an effect on seeing connections (Lai, 2013) between the theoretical basis behind 10-FACTOR and leadership in practice, which contributes to increased motivation to use the 10-FACTOR as a tool for development. We also find other conditions, especially within the leader's context, that have an impact on whether the 10-FACTOR is used. Here, time appears to be a significant framework condition that affects positively and negatively and also that top management has developed clear expectations for both the 10-FACTOR and leadership in the form of clear guidelines. The master thesis also looks at competence and motivation within the leader as factors that influence implementation. The necessary knowledge for the leader in our context is linked to what the task is investigating, namely characteristics that promote implementation. Since the 10-FACTOR is a survey and a development tool that requires leadership of employees, we have looked at the relational leadership style as essential in this context. This leadership style has similarities with the leadership style that is also measured in 10-FACTOR, mastery-oriented leadership. Here, our most important findings are that the implementation of 10-FACTOR takes place to the greatest extent where the informant's leadership style is in line with the conditions within the ten factors. This seemed to be related to the fact that the leader's motivation increased when they recognized their own leadership style in the ten factors and thus saw it as a useful tool. Previous studies have also examined 10-FACTOR as both an employee, leader and organizational development tool (Dybdal & Masteroppgave, 2022; Kielland, 2017; Molstad & Spangberg, 2018). These studies have elements of factors that our survey also looks at, but none of the tasks look at the breadth of factors that can influence implementation, both in terms of individual characteristics of the leader, organizational characteristics, and various HRM practices that promote and inhibit. Several of our findings are in line with previous research, but new from our research seems to be especially the importance of the leader team and geographical distance between leaders. A surprising finding was that all informants were positive about the 10-FACTOR as an employee survey and development tool, also in cases where both time and span of control were challenging, this was justified by the informants that the survey measured important factors that were research-based, and the survey's validity due to its construction. The study will finally be able to provide knowledge about which HRM practices can promote to increase the effect of implementing strategies, here the 10-FACTOR as an HR strategy for organizational development

Title: The significance of dramatic form in Jon Fosse's dramatic texts a comparative analysis of Someone is coming, The Name and I Am the Wind. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to show various dramatic forms that are reused by Jon Fosse in his dramatic texts, which the literary researcher Pèter Szondi has defined and refers to in his own work. The dramatic forms in question are covered by Szondi under what he calls "The Drama in Crisis and Rescue Attempts", in his theory Theorie des modernen Dramas from 1956. These dramatic forms were once radical and new forms, but they have gradually become established and classic in modern drama. Fosse's dramatic texts presents a recognizable theme around relationships and lack of communication, when you focus on how Fosse's characters interact through language. Seen from this point of view, Fosse's dramatic texts can be read in line with traditional genre expectations, such as that the drama requires an absolute present and that the drama is a fundamentally relational genre. Through this perspective, Fosse's language can easily be understood as a demonstration of a lack of communication and common language in social relationships or dependency relationships. The reception around Fosse often contains concepts such as emptiness, meaninglessness, failure of communication, isolation and loneliness. My point of view in this master’s thesis, however, is that this understanding implies a limited perspective which means that one possibly misses out on the diversity and breadth of meaning in Fosse's dramatic texts. The purpose of examining how Fosse reuses these dramatic forms that Szondi has defined is to show how these forms help to expand the space of meaning and the thematic focus on communication and the relational in the three selected drama texts. That is to say that these forms, when we first focus on them, alter or adjust the thematic reading of Fosse that concentrates on a communicative and relational problematic. The result is that these dramatic forms contribute to a thematic expansion and a thematic duality. That in Fosse's drama texts which pointed towards communication and the relational, now also points in the direction of something existential, something bigger than us humans, and which concerns how the large connections make people's lives important and meaningful

    Get PDF
Coupled with capacity challenges and a demanding economy, this necessitates the police to adopt new knowledge and new work methods. Increased involvement of citizens in a co-creation perspective is an example of this. A clear directive in the police's channel strategy is that the police should prioritize citizens and ensure more involvement from citizens through effective co-creation processes. In this master's thesis, we have attempted to identify the primary barriers hindering this type of co-creation. Data collection consisted of qualitative interviews with a selection of leaders in the Innlandet and Vest police districts. The material has later been processed through thematic analysis. Our findings suggest that resource scarcity impacts most of the barriers. Leaders express the need to make tough prioritizations, and there is little capacity left for innovation processes. Leaders also feel squeezed between objectives and demands from central authorities, citizens' expectations, and the resources they actually have available. Additionally, we see that political and administrative micromanagement can contribute to complicating co-creation processes because it leads to unpredictable framework conditions, including those related to finances, organizational structure, and local autonomy. The evaluation following the police reform shows that the police have succeeded in building stronger professional environments, but at the same time, this has also come at the expense of local presence. This may lead to a reduction in informal contacts with citizens and a weakening of the sense of security and citizens' trust in the police. Therefore, the centralization of the police seems to be a barrier to co-creation. The lack of investment in further development and modernization within IT and digital infrastructure also constitutes a barrier to digital co-creation. Our findings further suggest that there are certain aspects of police culture that may hinder co-creation processes. Through empirical evidence and theory, we have shown that there are attitudes related to both arrogance and lack of humility within the police. A central finding also concerns the function of the police in society, and that parts of the organization that wield power and formal authority are less suitable for co-creation. Particularly because co-creation largely requires voluntary participation and motivation from participants. Overarching management signals may therefore appear contradictory because parts of the police do not seem to be suited for that type of co-creation. Preventive police work, however, may be more suitable, but this part of the police's work seems to lose ground facing a poor financial situation. As an indirect consequence of resource scarcity, this thus appears to be a barrier to co-creation and citizen involvement

Global fertility in 204 countries and territories, 1950-2021, with forecasts to 2100: a comprehensive demographic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

Background Accurate assessments of current and future fertility—including overall trends and changing population age structures across countries and regions—are essential to help plan for the profound social, economic, environmental, and geopolitical challenges that these changes will bring. Estimates and projections of fertility are necessary to inform policies involving resource and health-care needs, labour supply, education, gender equality, and family planning and support. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 produced up-to-date and comprehensive demographic assessments of key fertility indicators at global, regional, and national levels from 1950 to 2021 and forecast fertility metrics to 2100 based on a reference scenario and key policy-dependent alternative scenarios. Methods To estimate fertility indicators from 1950 to 2021, mixed-effects regression models and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression were used to synthesise data from 8709 country-years of vital and sample registrations, 1455 surveys and censuses, and 150 other sources, and to generate age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs) for 5-year age groups from age 10 years to 54 years. ASFRs were summed across age groups to produce estimates of total fertility rate (TFR). Livebirths were calculated by multiplying ASFR and age-specific female population, then summing across ages 10–54 years. To forecast future fertility up to 2100, our Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) forecasting model was based on projections of completed cohort fertility at age 50 years (CCF50; the average number of children born over time to females from a specified birth cohort), which yields more stable and accurate measures of fertility than directly modelling TFR. CCF50 was modelled using an ensemble approach in which three sub-models (with two, three, and four covariates variously consisting of female educational attainment, contraceptive met need, population density in habitable areas, and under-5 mortality) were given equal weights, and analyses were conducted utilising the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. To capture time-series trends in CCF50 not explained by these covariates, we used a first-order autoregressive model on the residual term. CCF50 as a proportion of each 5-year ASFR was predicted using a linear mixed-effects model with fixed-effects covariates (female educational attainment and contraceptive met need) and random intercepts for geographical regions. Projected TFRs were then computed for each calendar year as the sum of single-year ASFRs across age groups. The reference forecast is our estimate of the most likely fertility future given the model, past fertility, forecasts of covariates, and historical relationships between covariates and fertility. We additionally produced forecasts for multiple alternative scenarios in each location: the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for education is achieved by 2030; the contraceptive met need SDG is achieved by 2030; pro-natal policies are enacted to create supportive environments for those who give birth; and the previous three scenarios combined. Uncertainty from past data inputs and model estimation was propagated throughout analyses by taking 1000 draws for past and present fertility estimates and 500 draws for future forecasts from the estimated distribution for each metric, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) given as the 2·5 and 97·5 percentiles of the draws. To evaluate the forecasting performance of our model and others, we computed skill values—a metric assessing gain in forecasting accuracy—by comparing predicted versus observed ASFRs from the past 15 years (2007–21). A positive skill metric indicates that the model being evaluated performs better than the baseline model (here, a simplified model holding 2007 values constant in the future), and a negative metric indicates that the evaluated model performs worse than baseline. Findings During the period from 1950 to 2021, global TFR more than halved, from 4·84 (95% UI 4·63–5·06) to 2·23 (2·09–2·38). Global annual livebirths peaked in 2016 at 142 million (95% UI 137–147), declining to 129 million (121–138) in 2021. Fertility rates declined in all countries and territories since 1950, with TFR remaining above 2·1—canonically considered replacement-level fertility—in 94 (46·1%) countries and territories in 2021. This included 44 of 46 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, which was the super-region with the largest share of livebirths in 2021 (29·2% [28·7–29·6]). 47 countries and territories in which lowest estimated fertility between 1950 and 2021 was below replacement experienced one or more subsequent years with higher fertility; only three of these locations rebounded above replacement levels. Future fertility rates were projected to continue to decline worldwide, reaching a global TFR of 1·83 (1·59–2·08) in 2050 and 1·59 (1·25–1·96) in 2100 under the reference scenario. The number of countries and territories with fertility rates remaining above replacement was forecast to be 49 (24·0%) in 2050 and only six (2·9%) in 2100, with three of these six countries included in the 2021 World Bank-defined low-income group, all located in the GBD super-region of sub-Saharan Africa. The proportion of livebirths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa was forecast to increase to more than half of the world's livebirths in 2100, to 41·3% (39·6–43·1) in 2050 and 54·3% (47·1–59·5) in 2100. The share of livebirths was projected to decline between 2021 and 2100 in most of the six other super-regions—decreasing, for example, in south Asia from 24·8% (23·7–25·8) in 2021 to 16·7% (14·3–19·1) in 2050 and 7·1% (4·4–10·1) in 2100—but was forecast to increase modestly in the north Africa and Middle East and high-income super-regions. Forecast estimates for the alternative combined scenario suggest that meeting SDG targets for education and contraceptive met need, as well as implementing pro-natal policies, would result in global TFRs of 1·65 (1·40–1·92) in 2050 and 1·62 (1·35–1·95) in 2100. The forecasting skill metric values for the IHME model were positive across all age groups, indicating that the model is better than the constant prediction. Interpretation Fertility is declining globally, with rates in more than half of all countries and territories in 2021 below replacement level. Trends since 2000 show considerable heterogeneity in the steepness of declines, and only a small number of countries experienced even a slight fertility rebound after their lowest observed rate, with none reaching replacement level. Additionally, the distribution of livebirths across the globe is shifting, with a greater proportion occurring in the lowest-income countries. Future fertility rates will continue to decline worldwide and will remain low even under successful implementation of pro-natal policies. These changes will have far-reaching economic and societal consequences due to ageing populations and declining workforces in higher-income countries, combined with an increasing share of livebirths among the already poorest regions of the world.publishedVersio

Willingness to pay for fast-track tickets in the alpine skiing industry: a case study of a Norwegian ski resort

    Get PDF
We evaluate a fast-track ticket alternative in the alpine skiing industry using data from a survey of skiers at a major ski resort in Norway. We estimate price-response functions, optimal prices for fast-track tickets and use regression to analyse the most important characteristics of skiers who demand the fast-track ticket alternative. Our findings show that the additional willingness to pay for a fast-track ticket over the standard day-pass ticket ranges from 4% (one minute waiting time) to 13% (20 minutes waiting time). The skiers with the highest demand for the fast-track ticket alternative are typically single men living near the ski resort who do most of their alpine skiing during the weekend. Some respondents expressed critical concerns regarding the fast-track ticket alternative, and we therefore discuss some customer acceptance challenges and ethical aspects associated with such an alternative.publishedVersio

Unveiling the impact of second homes on rural development: a scoping review

    Get PDF
To combat rural socio-economic decline, second-home development is seen as a strategy for fostering rural development and mitigating decline across several regions in the Nordic. This scoping review aims to identify key themes in the literature to explore the broader impact of second homes on rural development. A systematic search strategy identified 46 English-language peer-reviewed articles and chapters. The analysis identified four overarching themes: ‘Restructuring rural areas,” “Population distribution,” “Perceptions of rural development,” and “Second-home owners as stakeholders.” Additionally, variables affecting impact were identified, confirming the imperative for context-sensitive studies. The identified gap in understanding how second-home development affects local businesses and their innovative capabilities represents a paradox, given their crucial role in rural development. Addressing this gap requires integrating business-oriented perspectives, exploring themes such as knowledge transfer, linkages, sources for innovation, diversification, and barriers to business development. Recognizing the central role of the municipal level in rural development, this review calls for further research to elaborate on their multifaceted role. However, reliance solely on English-language peer-reviewed sources may overlook significant insights from non-English peer-reviewed literature and other types of literature, potentially limiting the scope of conclusions drawn.Unveiling the impact of second homes on rural development: a scoping reviewpublishedVersio

Humanoid Robots as Learning Assistants? Useability Perspectives of Grade 6 Students

    Get PDF
Despite the increasing number of robots in educational settings, they are relatively new, with ambiguous research findings regarding a robot’s influence on students’ learning, psychosocial aspects, and gender differences. In this study, 17 Grade 6 students in a Norwegian school participated in a human–robot interaction (HRI) session with mathematics and programming tasks followed by focus group interviews to explore their experiences. Thematic analysis resulted in four main themes: (1) Technical aspects, (2) Robots as educational assistants, (3) Robot features, and (4) Attitudes regarding robots. Overall, the students found the robot entertaining, providing mastery experiences in mathematics and programming. Some technical difficulties were experienced, and the robot’s lack of facial expressions, emotions, and tailored feedback created interaction challenges. Gender differences regarding interest in people versus things were found. The implementation of robots in education shows potential, however, more research is needed, especially longitudinal exploring the impact of HRI in education.publishedVersio
