Background: Violence and threats are an increasing problem that affect both health and well-being in the workplace. Despite the requirements placed on organizations and employers, healthcare personnel often feel inadequately supported and followed up after incidents of violence and threats in their work environment. These incidents have significant health consequences at both the individual and societal levels. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore how healthcare personnel in municipal mental health and addiction services experienced incidents of violence and threats, along with their experiences related to support and follow-up. We aimed to amplify the voices of healthcare personnel and highlight the consequences these experiences have for the individuals, the services, and society. Method: Our study utilizes a qualitative research design, employing semi-structured interviews with a total of five informants from mental health and addiction services across various municipalities. The analysis was conducted using simplified thematic analysis. Results: Several individuals have been subjected to serious incidents of violence and threats. Healthcare personnel experienced many strong emotions and reactions. Support and care from colleagues were crucial. There was a significant difference in how they were followed up and cared for by management. Effective daily routines were present in the work environment, and the police provided valuable help and security. Informants reported that tolerance for violence and threats had increased, and boundaries had been pushed too far. Conclusion: The study highlights a significant challenge within the healthcare system. There is a need for measures to improve the mental health of healthcare personnel and to develop clearer procedures for support and follow-up after incidents of violence and threats. Keywords: Violence, threats, healthcare personnel, mental health, follow-up, care, managers, colleagues

This master’s thesis investigates how collaboration within the local sustainability program Klimasterke can serve as an arena for learning and development for organisations in the Kongsvinger region. It addresses a research gap: despite abundant theory on sustainability and organisational learning, there is little empirical knowledge of how learning actually occurs in local networks. The overarching aim, therefore, is to explore how network participation contributes to sustainability-related learning, and how place acts as a catalyst for such learning. The theoretical foundation builds on Hermelingmeier and von Wirth’s (2021) systematic review of the link between organisational learning and sustainability. They identify place, understood as the shared geographical context of the organisations, as a potential catalyst for local learning environments and call for more empirical research on this topic. Benn et al. (2013) support the same agenda, urging studies that show how place can function as a boundary object in network learning on sustainability. These calls provide the theoretical rationale for examining Klimasterke as a local, place-based learning network. The thesis has a qualitative, exploratory case-study design. The dataset comprises six in-depth interviews with seven informants from six organisations, four participants and two mentors, alongside non-participant observation of two network gatherings. Observation mostly served as a supplementary method in advance of the interviews, to refine the interview guide and deepen the researchers’ understanding. Findings indicate that Klimasterke offers participants practice-oriented learning in two ways: “inspiration for action” (concrete emission- and cost-reducing measures) and “inspiration for organising” (ways to embed sustainability work internally). We have identified certain weaknesses within the network related to the participants’ levels of competence and experience—a gap that could indicate weaker learning outcomes for the parties involved. The participants in the program embrace a clear win-win perspective (Van der Byl & Slawinski, 2015), viewing economic and sustainability goals as interlinked. The sustainability manager role in a small enterprise, together with local anchoring functions as a boundary object that strengthens motivation, sense of community, and perceived relevance. Limitations in this study include a small, context-sensitive sample, a short time window, and a focus on subjective experiences; results should therefore be generalised cautiously. The absence of long-term follow-up leaves lasting organisational effects unknown, and the case design covers only voluntary learning networks, not value chains. Future research should (1) track individual organisations over time to trace the institutionalisation of learning, (2) examine learning at the workplace level, and (3) compare voluntary networks with value-chain-based collaborations to determine whether tighter linkages produce stronger and more enduring sustainability outcomes

The Norwegian sport model is widely recognized for its emphasis on inclusivity, democratic governance, and strong tradition of volunteerism. This article examines the sustainability of relying on volunteers in Norwegian sports and whether the high level of volunteerism affects democracy in sport organizations. Drawing on academic literature and national statistics, this article highlights the significant contributions of voluntary work to Norwegian organized sports. However, shifts toward more individualized and short-term volunteering may threaten the sustainability of this model. Moreover, while the structures within Norwegian sport organizations may offer opportunities for democratic learning, there are also some limitations. The article concludes that, while the Norwegian sport model remains a successful example of community-based sports, sport organizations must adapt to a changing societal landscape.

How do CEOs in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Norway perceive their role in the company's environmental sustainability? How do they view the company's responsibility for environmental sustainability?

    Get PDF
This study investigates how CEOs in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Norway perceive their role and responsibility in the context of environmental sustainability. Utilizing a qualitative research design with semi-structured interviews, the study explores CEOs’ understanding of environmental sustainability, their perceived leadership roles, decision-making processes, and the challenges they face when implementing sustainable practices. The findings indicate that CEOs see themselves as critical actors responsible for driving sustainability initiatives within their companies. Their roles encompass initiating sustainability strategies, leading by example, and balancing economic constraints with environmental objectives. Informants identified internal values, external market pressures, and regulatory frameworks as significant factors influencing their sustainability decisions. Major challenges highlighted include limited financial resources, resistance to change within the organization and supply chains, and navigating unpredictable political frameworks. Despite these obstacles, the study reveals a strong sense of ethical responsibility among the interviewed CEOs, who acknowledge that SMEs have a substantial role in contributing to environmental sustainability. They emphasize that collective efforts across different-sized enterprises are essential for achieving meaningful environmental impact. The study contributes to existing literature by providing insights into the relatively underexplored area of environmental sustainability within SMEs. It highlights the nuanced perspectives of SME leaders, stressing the need for balanced approaches to sustainability that incorporate both economic viability and ethical commitments. Finally, the thesis suggests areas for future research, including larger and more diverse samples, deeper qualitative studies, mixed-method approaches, comparative industry analyses, and international studies to further enrich understanding in this field

    Get PDF
This master's thesis investigates how the Norwegian police work to prevent and combat economic crime committed by criminal networks, and how structural and organizational factors influence this effort. Economic crime poses a serious and growing threat to societal trust and economic sustainability, requiring cooperation between the police, financial institutions, and other actors. The study is based on qualitative interviews with police personnel and document analysis, and employs an abductive research strategy. The analysis is structured around four key factors: collaboration, organization, competence, and resources, as well as cross-cutting challenges and barriers. Findings reveal a fragmented organizational structure, weak national coordination, competence gaps in digital economic crime, and persistent resource and technological constraints. A clear gap is identified between strategic goals and actual practice, particularly in the field of prevention, which remains the police's stated primary strategy. The Økokrim model is highlighted as an underutilized framework with the potential to strengthen cross-sectoral and intelligence-led efforts. Moreover, the analysis indicates that challenges are not solely related to structure and capacity, but also to cultural and institutional factors that shape how economic crime is understood and prioritized. The thesis concludes that a more integrated, coordinated, and competence-driven approach is necessary to address the threat posed by criminal networks, and that this requires a broader reflection on the police's role and culture in confronting complex societal threats

Digital service orientation: unlocking servitization in service operations and service sales

    Get PDF
Purpose Manufacturers increasingly harness digital technologies in their servitization efforts. However, the research has mainly focused on higher-level aspects of servitization, often overlooking the role of organizational routines at the firm-customer interface. This especially concerns two key customer-facing functions, service operations and service sales. This study explores how digital service orientation can be induced within these units’ organizational routines. Design/methodology/approach Survey data from 534 respondents (270 in service operations and 264 in service sales) from a market-leading manufacturing corporation implementing a digital service strategy were analyzed with a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Findings The analysis uncovers alternative configurations of routine elements that induce digital service orientation in customer-facing units. These configurations combine four core routine elements: technology foresight, adaptability, agility, and rule-bending. Notably, distinct cross-functional patterns—assertive, responsive, and nimble—emerge across service operations and sales. Practical implications For managers, the cross-functional patterns offer a useful tool for inducing digital service orientation across customer-facing functions. Originality/value This exploratory study advances servitization research by identifying cross-functional patterns that induce digital service orientation. The findings reveal a surprising degree of homogeneity between service operations and sales, with greater alignment than previously assumed. This study also highlights the role of rule-bending in managing the often-overlooked tensions inherent in digital service strategies. Additionally, it points to a more limited role of customer focus, particularly in the context of intermediate services.publishedVersio

Mapping Resource Selection Function for two forest grouse species in forested landscapes: Habitat selection of black grouse and capercaillie in August

    Get PDF
Boreal forests in Norway have been altered drastically by forest management, especially since around 1950 when clear-cutting started to be an increasingly common management practice. The influence of this changed landscape causes concern about biodiversity loss but remains unclear for many species. While it is seen to favor species of early successional stages, the opposite is expected for species with a preference for climax forests. In this paper, a resource selection function (RSF) is performed to investigate the structural requirements of black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) and capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) in forested landscapes of Innlandet County in Norway based on forest resource variables, vegetation type, topographic variables and information on proximity to mires and bogs. While both are seen to inhabit different successional stages, with the former preferring young forest stands and the latter old natural forests, declines in both populations have reduced numbers throughout Norway in the 20th century. This decline has attracted much attention among scientists, but the reason is not yet fully understood. Changes in forest structure and reproductive success appear to play a central role. Therefore, intraspecific habitat preferences are investigated to highlight the differences between adult birds and brood-rearing females for both species. The RSF findings largely agree with both species' positioning along the succession gradient. Nevertheless, unsuspected overlap of valuable habitat for both species is found. Further, a discrepancy was found between the highly valued habitats of females with chicks and adults, especially for capercaillie. The results of the RSFs are predicted on forests in Innlandet (Norway) and the maps are further investigated. The study aims to provide a basis for forest managers in identifying valuable forest characteristics for both species in Norwegian forests

Hibernation depth in relation to den type in Scandinavian brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Sweden

    Get PDF
Hibernation is an adaptation brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Scandinavia utilise, enabling them to endure long winters by conserving energy. This study investigates how den type affects hibernation physiology, specifically body temperature (Tb) and heart rate (HR), in pregnant and non-pregnant brown bears in Sweden. Using data from 83 hibernation events across 48 individuals collected between 2010 and 2020, and classifying den types into four categories based on insulation potential, I applied generalised additive mixed models (GAMMs) to analyse daily mean Tb and HR. I tried to control for the effect of body mass, but can not exclude a possible influence of increasing Tb with decreasing body mass. Results show that non-pregnant bears hibernating in excavated anthill- and soil dens maintained significantly lower Tb compared to those in less insulated nest/bed dens, while HR remained consistent across den types. Rock and tree root dens exhibited intermediate profiles, with Tb values higher than those in anthill and soil dens but lower than in nest/bed dens. Pregnant females exhibited stable and elevated Tb regardless of den type, likely due to the energetic demands of gestation and lactation. These findings suggest that better insulated dens enable greater metabolic suppression and energy conservation in non-pregnant bears, whereas reproductive demands ensure stable Tb in pregnant females. Den type, insulation, and potential for disturbance may therefore be critical factors influencing energy expenditure during hibernation. The findings of this study have important implications for conservation and management, especially under scenarios of climate change and increasing human disturbance, which may limit access to optimal denning habitats

    Get PDF
The topic of this master's thesis is an increasing scope of digital financial crime and how this affects the banking industry’s way of doing business. The background for choosing the topic is an ever-increasing focus on artificial intelligence, combined with the fact that one of us has worked with anti-money laundering work in banking. Criminals are becoming increasingly inventive in their attempts to launder money. At the end of November 2024, a money laundering conference was held, which was a collaboration between Finance Norway, Økokrim and Finanstilsynet. At this money laundering conference, it became clear that authorities and the financial industry would deploy resources and intensify efforts to combat money laundering (Finans Norge, 2025). This shows that the authorities take this form of financial crime seriously. Banks are considered to have a high risk of being misused for money laundering. This assessment follows from the service and product offering, the number of customers, accessibility, exposure to risk industries, forms of crime and money laundering mode. Banks are attractive to use in the placement, concealment and integration phases of a money laundering process (Finanstilsynet, 2023). The problem is: “How has the increasing scope of money laundering and use of artificial intelligence, changed savings banks’ Management Control Systems?”. The theoretical framework of the master's thesis consists of theory about economic management theory, artificial intelligence (AI) and money laundering. The thesis is a qualitative case study of a selection of Norwegian banks. To shed light on the problem, we have, in addition to the theoretical part, conducted interviews with employees in a selection of Norwegian banks. Our findings indicate that banks have begun to implement AI as a tool to combat money laundering more effectively than they do today. At the same time, the findings show that there are very few banks that use AI to combat money laundering. Many people use Microsoft Copilot as a kind of assistant they ask for advice. Banks are also seeing an extensive increase in digital fraud and money laundering. They report that criminals are becoming more increasingly inventive in their attempts to launder and defraud private individuals and companies. Furthermore, our findings show that banks have adopted various systems, such as alarm systems, to combat money laundering, in addition to increasing their anti-money laundering staffing

    Get PDF
This master's thesis investigates decision-making within the police force, with a particular focus on the decision-making strategies used by police-educated personnel versus civilian employees. The study is based on two decision-making theories: maximizing and satisficing. Maximizing refers to thorough decision processes involving the evaluation of multiple options, while satisficing involves making quick decisions that are “good enough.” The aim of the thesis has been to explore whether there are systematic differences in decision-making between these two groups, and whether factors such as time pressure and stress influence their decisions differently. Using a quantitative survey, data were collected from police employees to examine their decision-making processes. The main findings indicate that police-educated personnel more frequently use satisficing, while civilian employees tend to favor maximizing. This supports the notion that police-educated personnel, who are trained to make rapid decisions in stressful situations, often opt for satisfactory solutions. Civilians, who typically work in administrative and analytical roles, have more time to consider alternatives and therefore apply maximizing strategies. The study also shows that education plays a significant role in decision-making, as police-educated personnel are trained to handle stress and make quick decisions, while civilian employees have greater opportunity for thorough evaluations. These findings have practical implications for how the police can design training and development programs to enhance decision-making across different work contexts. However, limitations such as a low response rate and an unbalanced sample may affect the generalizability of the results. Future research should aim to include a larger and more representative sample and further examine how specific job tasks influence decision-making. This thesis provides new insights into how different groups within the police make decisions and can serve as a tool for improving decision-making and training in the police force. It also contributes to a better understanding of how decisions are made under pressure and stress in complex work environments
